I live in western Colorado, a bastion of right wing politics. The MAGAts here on social media always try to blame local crime on Democrats. For a while I told them Republicans control everything around here but I gave up. One idiot said crime was up because a Democratic president makes criminals think what they're doing is OK.

fark these assholes.

We here and they need to do something / We voted to pay for more taxes targeted to help the homeless but nothings seems to get done. We voted to decriminalize personal use amounts of narcotics but that seem to make things worse. People in my neighborhood want more police but none of the councilpersons will agree as that destroys the Portland narrative. We have run out of compassion for the homeless. The park across the street from my church has become an open air drug market with the occasional shootings and prostitution. We've upped our fences and alarms.

Its not very long until the holiday shopping season ramps up and this guy is encouraging people to load for bear each and every time they leave the house. When a squabble over a parking spot or a cut in a checkout line leads to shooting its this a-holes family jewels that need to be sledge-hammered, IMHO.

Why is the homeless problem in portland so bad? Are they all locals or did they move there? If they did, what attracts them there?

They so badly want a civil war. Never realizing what that would actually mean. They think it means going door to door and shooting liberals as they answer, and then living in New Zion paradise of religious dogma with women finally free to be barefoot in the kitchen, subservient to the men in their lives, and the world is free of queers and anyone darker than "Wunder brot"

When, really, that is not how shiat would go down at all because they will have no idea who's on which "team" but, it'll be pretty clear who the hell the ones wearing the red hats, khakis, Hawaiian shirts, and covered in TURD45SS!! and swag with bastardized American flags all over them is.

People move here. The weather is pretty decent much of the year, and our laws afford the homeless a more rights and protections than they have in other states.

It just sucks that, just like every other state, including all the liberal ones, no one in power feels like doing anything that would actually help.

My area elected that the problem wasn't that we were doing "homeless sweeps" which, if you math it out end up paying overtime police officer staff enough funds to house every man, woman, child, Enby, dog, cat, pet tortoise and Barbie doll that they end up sweeping, but instead the fix to the problem is that, we aren't sweeping hard enough

So, like clockwork, the homeless move in to an area, usually a few set up some tents, more come, eventually after a few months you get a "Hooverville", then, the police show up en masse, beat people, pepper spray the area, throw all their tents and supplies in a dump truck, clap each other on the back and head home after a rough day.
So, the homeless are now off panhandling for tents again and supplies try to acquire some, and settle in a new area.
Repeat every 6 months.

Thereby solving the problem forever!

You've upped your fences? Not sure what that means. Did you make them taller? As for alarms, I would think one system would be enough. It's existential at this point: right/white/guns equate to law and order. Blacks/Democrats/Immigrants equal disorder, and disorder equates to crime. They can't even equate what that crime is, only that it happens and is tearing the country down.

They are shipped there. Same problem LA has. Surrounding cities don't offer any homeless services, intentionally, and then round up their homeless to be sent to LA because they "can better serve them."

The standard policy for homelessness in America is to ship them off to major cities and then complain that those cities are overrun by the homeless people they sent there.

I mean, genocides and purges are pretty "easy" once your side has unquestioned power. Their pp gets hard at the idea of being the death squads. It worked for Germany. It worked for a bunch of African wars. And works pretty good innthe middle east.

My old boss, a director of data engineering & analytics, super smart lady, compassionate yet demanding of her employees, leads by example, she inspires people to do their best work, best boss I ever had. We stay in touch.

So Mrs little red bot and I recently had another baby and the old boss sends a gift. She sends me two texts in 12 hours asking me to confirm that I got the gift.

When I finally texted her back at like hour 16 she tells me she was worried the baby's gift would be stolen cause she know how crazy thing are where I live.

I live in a nice, diverse, blue collar, middle class neighborhood in a city that is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the US. But she's originally an Iowa farm girl who now lives 30 mins outside the Metro area I live in. She watches fox news (but I swear she's a good person) and is utterly certain that the city I live in is a war zone.

There is no convincing her otherwise. Its really sad cause she is otherwise so great.

That's because actually doing something to help means doing extremely unpopular things that are going to piss off both sides of the spectrum. It would require forcibly removing people against their will and placing them in facilities against their will, in some cases indefinitely. It would come with a massive price tag to it and result in either setting aside land and or housing which will ultimately have some adverse effects on the areas it is located it.

Nobody likes facing reality. It is messy and complex. You cannot simply throw money at it or have an entirely benevolent approach. Mental illness, drug addiction, and criminal activity are rampant in with the homeless. In some cases it might be the cause or contributing factor. It also might be the result of being homeless. Trying to create a safe environment and housing means turning away or removing other homeless. At the same time, rigid policies and logistics can be cumbersome (see dog/animal ownership) disallowing an individual from being afforded housing.

All I ever see on Fark when it comes to the problem are people biatching about "nothing being done" and at the same time also biatching when something is done. I spend a portion of my time helping families displaced. I have been scammed more times than I can count. I have been attacked and have had to call the cops numerous times - which always ends in and awkward sort of stalemate as law enforcement does not want to generally mess with all the red tape nor are they prepared for those level of interactions. Helping is really hard and the issue won't get better unless people are willing to face reality and give up whatever dumb pretenses they have.

They're just flat ass lying, as fascist scum does. There are not more murders now by number or per capita, not even CLOSE.

Ask anyone who lived in NYC in 1990 what "sky high" crime is like.

Hint: at that time, there were more murders in one borough in one month than all of NYC now sees in an entire year. Remember how all those 80s sci fi shows depicted cities as being about to collapse into barbarism? It wasn't just for grins and giggles, it was writers looking at the trajectory from 1955 to 1985 and projecting forward.

Remember the neverending barrage of shiat that younger democrats threw at Hillary and Biden over the 1994 crime bill? I guarantee you none of them have ever talked to someone who was an adult in a big city in the early 90s about it. Everyone was desperate for something to help.

Sadly, we now know that the only thing that would've helped was to go back in time and kill Thomas Midgley.
