Orcas are the "us" of the seas. Smarter than dolphins.

Whales are the cattle of the seas, which is why people love them. They remind us of our grandmothers.

Orcas are dolphins. Dolphins are whales, or more precisely cetaceans which the entirety of the whale/dolphin/porpoise group falls under.

Now, more to the point, I have witnessed humpbacks taking other species under their protection from predatory whales. They're not cattle. They're highly intelligent and apparently at times empathetic to those of other species.

Conversely, I have also witnessed humpbacks trying to smack dolphins with their tail - because the dolphins are trolling them by buzzing them and poking them. For fun.

Dolphins are the real assholes here.

Orcas were just farking with the humpbacks. Orcas regularly hunt gray whale calves in Monterey bay. First they separate it from the mother, then drown it. Full grown humpbacks are too big to drown.

Damn - "Between 50 and 75 orcas took part in each hunt, and more than a dozen of the same individuals were involved in all three events" that is a seriously organised activity.  No wonder it is a rare event, organising so many orcas to act together over such a long hunt is amazing.

This is my favourite orca story, though it is sad in places:

I've been fascinated with blue whales since I was a kid. I really wish we had a way to help their population recover. The continuing insistence of Pacific Rim cultures on hunting them infuriates me, but then, so does all whaling. There's nothing we get from a dead whale that we can't get elsewhere. Leave them be.

You're first I'm last, your thirst I'm asked to justify
Killing our last Heaven beast
Don't hunt the whale

In beauty, vision, do we offer much?
If we reason with destiny, gonna lose our touch
Don't kill the whale, dig it

Rejoice, they sing, they worship their own space
In a moment of love, they will die for their grace
Don't kill the whale

If time will allow we will judge all who came
In the wake of our new age to stand for the frail
Don't kill the whale Dig it, dig it
