I wonder if Bussiness Insider was concerned back when Stromboli Thursdayman was still in congress

Fair point, but there's really no reason for her to stay in that position if she isn't able to track current affairs. It's not like the Dems are going to lose the senate seat

Can we just come together to agree that she should get the f*ck out and be replaced with someone who has a functional brain?

It should be that wat for anyone who has completely lost their mind. Get them out and go through the replacement process

It is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY past time.

Didn't her staffers say a few months ago she's barely cognizant, and they do all the work and just tell her how to vote, but it's cool because that's the case for a bunch of congresscritters on both sides?

It really is just a bang-up system we got here. If only term limits could help.

I'd be happier if they could fix her brain tbh. She's never been the most popular senator, but she never shied away from taking the unpopular position if she felt it was right for the US. I'm not defending everything she did (she certainly missed the mark on a few occasions) but I'd rather have sane, smart and scary Feinstein than most of the other options.

Unfortunately the medical knowledge to fix her brain doesn't exist. She is no longer sane or smart, and is only scary in the "Alzheimer's patient driving a truck" sense.

If she was a character on a show with dragons and siblings with incest children, people would tune in every week to see how she's being manipulated.

But this? This is sad. And also terrifying.

It's really not too much to ask that folks 65 years or older be immediately retired from all positions in public service. They have little skin left in the game and the bit left is both wrinkly and gross.

Or at least an annual cognitive test.  Some people start losing their marbles much earlier than others.  Also, fat chance a bunch of old people in power will vote to automatically remove themselves from said place of power.

Why is it always Feinstein's age that matters?

Why not Grassley?

They're the same age!

Corruption in Iowa due to corn subsidies.

There is no reason to place an age-limit on cogressional representation that is consistent with small-d democracy.

This article merely provides reasons that CA may want to replace Feinstein with a better representative to congress.

She's already filed the preliminary paperwork to run for reelection in 2024. Hopefully that is just SOP and she retires.

I'm kind of surprised there isn't a way to push her out. She clearly isn't well.

I have never liked her. We could do much better. She does need to be sent to a farm in NorCal to run in the fields with the others.

But the devil made here do it!

This is sad. Destroying her own legacy, either due to hubris or I don't know what causes her to refuse to stop running. I find it hard to believe California isn't knee deep in plausible candidates.

My mother is 87. She is a psychologist and still practices, because she can. If I thought she wasn't able to, I would tell her it's time to retire and she would listen to me. I took her driving privileges away years ago. She agreed. She recognizes her limitations.

Dianne needs to recognize she is no longer fit to serve. There is plenty of advisory work she could do. Or you know, help select and prepare a replacement.

Yeah, it's really a mystery why "go fight armed combat in a different country" and "be the person your constituents choose to represent them in a democratic government" might have differing requirements.

Sure, but almost every Republican in the House has lost their minds. How do we get them all out and replace them with people who don't lie about everything, even to themselves?

You don't think that forcing someone into that seat who is clearly sick isn't cruel? And having her votes controlled by unelected staffers and God only knows who else is undemocratic?

How do you recognize that you're not fit to serve when you have dementia? That's the root of the problem. The voters need to deal with her.

What is "forcing someone into that seat " supposed to mean in the context of a person unwilling to leave office?

2022-09-30 3:56:03 PM
This is just sad. It's not so much as a needed retirement age as a need for the elderly to get a trusted younger aide, friend or family member to tell them when it is time to hang it up.

My great-uncle arranged in advance for my dad and his son to tell him
when it was time to stop driving if he didn't recognize it himself.

Now he was a stubborn SOB and while my dad and his cousin were never afraid to voice their opinions, they were a bit nervous to tell him it was time to give up his independence when they noticed his skills were declining.

They quietly did this at a family event and uncle's basic reaction was he was waiting for them to tell him, figuring all was good enough if they thought they didn't need to stop him. I dont remember why my teenage self and cousin were in the room but i think we both instantly thought, uncle/grandpa's car is up for grabs. Cousin's older sibling bought the car...

Agreed.

They've had a number of opportunities to choose otherwise.

There's the rub. If the party can't tell her and the voters still choose her, wat do?

I'm all for it, but I think it is much more important for the president than congress. There is only one president. There are enough people in congress that it kind of provides a buffer against a small number of mentally challenged people.

I guess some of that goes out the window with Republicans making crazy a virtue, but still, the president has the power to launch nukes. In a first-world country, there should be zero worries about the mental competency of the leader.

We can disagree over policy, but we should all be able to agree if the guy is sane or not.

Term limits wouldn't necessarily help. Yes, you get rid of the senile codgers. But Congress runs on institutional knowledge. If you constantly have freshman coming in, they too are going to totally rely on their staffers.

Does it work for the presidency, though?? What do you mean by, "it works?"

You're happier with Trump having been president than, say, a third term of Obama?

Presidential term limits were enacted to keep popular Democratic presidents out of office.

Yeah, forcing.  She forgets what and who she's talking to mid conversation.  She forgets who her long term colleagues are.  She can't remember briefings. She doesn't have the capacity to know what she's doing anymore. Someone is controlling her.
