Is it just me, or is anyone else completely uninterested in the World Cup this year (because of both the host country and all the world news happening)?

Here. Also, not happening in summer, so SAD (or SADD?) will set in. Also, because not happening in summer and taking place in an Islamic country, we don't get eye candy or fan antics in the stands.

I hope United 2026 makes up for this.

Just saw that the US / Canada / Mexico will cohost and some games might be in Boston. Maybe it's time for a lengthy visit after 15 years.

FTA:

Will Qatar be the weakest host side to appear at a World Cup?

What an asinine question. The answer is an emphatic and unquestionable; yes.

When Qatar was awarded the World Cup in December of 2010, they were only one month removed from their lowest FIFA ranking of all time at #113. For comparison, eyebrows were raised with South Africa's selection as host of the 2010 World Cup and they were ranked about #67 at the time.

Qatar has already engaged in a controversial practice of trying to fast track naturalization for foreign-born players to be eligible to play for Qatar so as to avoid total embarrassment. By Qatar's own actions they are essentially admitting they are wholly unqualified for the competition they will face.

So while it might sound petty and mean-spirited, I hope Qatar gets utterly destroyed on their home turf and FIFA maybe thinks twice about such an idiotic selection in future.

Denver eventually got weeded out of the final bid. Dammit.

That brings me to my next complaint: World Cup 2026

Here's the distribution of games that I saw last.

Canada: 10 games
Mexico: 10 games
United States: 60 games.

Who's hosting this thing, really?

Oh they'll think twice about it, then they'll glance at the numbers on the cheque again and decide they were fine with it all along.

Unless I'm at least in the country where it's taking place I never care anymore. The actual on the field product is ALWAYS trash, so unless there are huge street parties( that I can attend) I have zero interest. I do enjoy watching certain teams lose, but I have no skin in the WC allegiance wise.

Are you kidding?

As in well played or just close? You're bound to get a good match here and there, but the vast majority of international games are ass.

I'm completely uninterested in the World Cup because it's soccer and utterly boring as shiat.

It would not surprise me if Qatar suddenly wants to renege on holding the WC after their national squad gets curbstomped.

/they can't legally do it but it might be fun watching them get huffy about it

The World Cup always comes down to the group draw. The knockout rounds can have some really interesting and close games, but the knockout round tends to be "international powerhouse vs. plucky underdog who got hot for a while" and those games stink.

I hate the format so much that it's hard for me to be objective, but in my experience it's the 2 good teams settling for an automatic draw against each other with 2 easy wins against 3 & 4. Maybe the match between 3 and 4 might be sloppy but close. Every once in a while there might be a lucky upset due to shiat officiating or random chance. The whole setup is bullshiat in my opinion.

I know this isn't the Politics tab, but I wonder how many Americans are going to want to visit Texas if it gets worse and worse by 2024.

Then they would move it to Los Angeles. I'm not sure it's been finalized yet, but Dallas, LA, and New York have been thrown around as the venues for the final Final. For some reason the news sources have acted as if Dallas has the nod...?

Does that mean no more spots for concacaf if all three automatically qualify? Because it should.

With expanded WC I think CONCACAF gets 1.5 spots besides these 3. 1 for who ever wins qualifying and 2nd place plays Oceania play in team.

There's enough people in DFW to fill Cowboys stadium for World Cup games.

Putting aside the ginormous about of North Americans who have played soccer who consider having it here a big deal, World Cup fans travel. There won't be a problem selling any seat to any game. I expect there will lots of stories about fans not being able to get tickets.
