Article gets Costello's ban incorrect. From what I recall as the explanation, he didn't swap equal length songs. He had asked to do "Radio, Radio", but Lorne said no due to timing issues. I think it was 30 seconds too long. When he stopped and went into it, he cause a big problem because they were either going to half to cut out before the song was over, or cause problems with planned commercial breaks, and possibly having to cut parts of the show that remained. It was a truly unprofessional thing to do to the show, and that is why Lorne wouldn't have them back for years.

that, and Lorne haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaates when anything goes off script.  People criticize the cast members for "reading" off the cue cards. "OMG can't they just memorize their lines, it's a 3 minute sketch!"  the dialogue changes sometimes right up until the sketch airs, so they have to read off the cue cards.

The Wayans guy got fired the night of the show, for, in what deemed a protest over his lack of airtime, playing a police officer in an extremely effete, basically stereotypically homosexual manner, which completely drew focus from the sketch.  Lorne was pissed.  Fired him the moment the sketch ended.

The only good thing about Lorne Michaels is Bill Hader's impression of him.

Folks are always getting banned.

Hardly anybody plays twice on SNL anyway, though it does happen

I farking hate Elvis Costello and his whiny nasal voice and trite lyrics. It's too bad Lorne didn't have security beat the shiat out of him on live TV with his dumb song playing in the background.

Elvis one of many so-called "secret deadheads".  he actually credits seeing them at a music festival outside London (or was in Manchester?) in 1972 that sealed his career plans.  he'd been playing local pubs as a kind of hobby but says he was so taken in with how the GD played, and how the crowd reacted, he's like, "that was a major turning point in me deciding, 'screw getting a trade or having a boss, I'm gonna go full steam towards this dream I have."

I'd love to see that show.  i hope it shows up on streaming or whatever.  I'm a huge Deadhead and a casual Elvis fan.  Have a great show!!!

I read a story where Ray Charles towards the end of his life, went to a Diana Krall concert, and word got back to Diana that he wanted to meet her.  Elvis supposedly asked, "can I come along?"

"No.  Ray said specifically, you can't come."

To be fair, it would have been hella awkward.

Costello and band got into an argument with the Stephen Stills band in a hotel bar, Columbus, OH, 1979.

Just to piss everybody off, Elvis called Ray Charles a blind, ignorant nword.

Bonnie Bramlett then biatchslapped that skinny Brit across the room.

I think sometime later (within a couple years), EC met with Ray and apologized and explained the circumstances - blind drunk and ornery.  Didn't excuse it, but at least put it in context.

1)  Annoying GE Smith Story:  I HATE how on the 1992 Tribute to Bob Dylan show, he inserts himself on every song, on the performer's mic.  He made so much of that event about him.  Yes, he was the musical director, kinda the height of his SNL powers, but, godamn did he upstage everyone.  Pretty sure George Harrison doesn't need you stealing his mic, bro.

2)  Hilarious GE Smith Story: so he caught a reputation as a Trumper after Trump took office, as he/his and played Trump rallies or possibly the inaguration.  something.  "Aw man, he's a Trumper!"  He was on Marc Maron podcast a couple years and asked about that.  "Aw man, fark no!  He's a farking CLOWN!  Anyone who lived in NYC in the 80s and 90s knows what a farking JOKE he is.  Look - I got a working band; we got  bills and families and mortgages just like anybody.  THey asked, I said 'how much', we took the money.  fark that guy!"
