I'm definitely going to trust someone who suggests putting leather in a washing machine!

Oh.
*discreetly removes cat from washing machine*

People here freaked out when I suggested clean large amount of collard greens, or Kale in the washing machine.
OMG OMG...YOU WASH CLOTHES IN THERE.
me: Just rinse it out, bleach it, and run a cycle with white vinegar
OMG OMG BUT THERE COULD BE POOP ON THE CLOTHES WASHED IN THAT SPINNY BASKET, AND UNDERWEAR YUUUK. USE A SINK
me: Dude...your sink has probably had raw chicken, delicate panties, rinsed in it and sometimes puppies, and often babies... POOPY PISSY BABIES. WTF?

They're also quite handy for washing odd metal bits, cinder blocks, etc.

So you don't have to click through the slideshow

Shower curtain liner - use till grungy, replace with another $2 plastic liner
Pillows - ?  If you can take the cover off maybe.  But the whole pillow?  nope
Car mats - WTF would I do that?  The car wash has a cool little machine that looks like an old ringer washer and they feed right in and voila'.
Leather Purses - Hell no that's what leather cleaner is for
Re-usable shopping bags - Maybe
Scrunchies - put them in a bag and wash like nylons
Mop head - maybe
Sponges - go in the dishwasher
Backpacks / Lunch bags - just rinse out in the sink

Something else you don't put in the washing machine:

This is the first time I've clicked on a Fark article not on mobile for years. Now I understand why people complain about slideshows.

When I was a kid, a neighbor down the street had an old washing machine he made "punch" in. Load it with elderberries, hose off and drain to rinse, then put it through a short washing cycle and collect the output.

The weak folks died young.

WTF is up with Fark today? Two slideshow articles about things that are just common sense. Except for the "leather in a washing machine" thing. That's uncommon nonsense.

Remove sweat and oil from your hair ties

Pretty sure the wife does this one on purpose. Can't run a load of laundry without these damn thigns turning up.

chess boards
houseplants
silverware

Somebody with skills should label the washing machine "Putin" and the brick "Ukraine".

1 Yep
2 Bad idea
3 No
4 I know how to care for leather, this isn't it*
5 If they are actual cloth sure, that weird paper cosplaying as cloth no(ask me how I know)
6 Sure I buy zippered pillowcases for small/delicate items
7 I bought a mop with a head I could remove to be able to wash iat in the machine
8 I don't use sponges, they are nasty
9 It depends on the quality of the material used

*I had a pair of leather gloves hidden in the pocket of a coat I washed and they shrunk to comical proportions. They might have fit an infant after washing. They were nice gloves but it was too funny to be upset about.

I do not work for this company, but may I sincerely reccomend a product called Zout? Cripes, it gets a lot of stains out of clothing. Amazing product.
Also, color grabbers/catchers. If there's a semi-mixed load of colorful clothing, they really grab the colors, even some of the dirt.
Also, linen clothing, sheets, can soak in cold water over night with less than half the usual amount of detergent then washed on the gentle cycle. Hang to dry. Seems like almost nothing stains that fabric.
If you can line dry on a very bright sunny day, good time to wash white clothing, sun does a good job of "bleaching" the fabrics.
Top loading washing machine only, easy to soak clothing, add various detergents and don't have to have to use a product to clean the machine's interior.

I'd rather spend a buck or less and buy a new sponge instead of using detergent, water and electricity to wash a dirty one.

I'll stick with daily urine collecting for my cleaning needs

At least once a year, I throw all my black clothes into the washer with a bottle of RIT dye to un-fade them.  Run the washer w/a bunch of detergent & bleach afterwards and it's fine for the next wash.

You get that you can just put the sponge in with a load that you were going too run ANYWAY right?!?!?

Right?!?!

You don't wash iat on its own, you toss it in with a load of towels. You're already washing them, so nothing is wasted.

Auto floor mats? Apart from the 5 pounds of road salt in each, there's about 3 pounds of gravel embedded in the fibers. I like my washing machine.

Maybe Jack isn't sponge worthy.

I had never heard of color grabbers/catchers.

Car mats you wash at the self-wash place. They have clamps to hook them to on the wall.

Most of the rest is disposable or something that needs to be cleaned "not in the farking washer."

I clean kitchen sponges and scrubber pads by running them through a couple of cycles in the dishwasher along side my dishes.

That problem does seem to be remarkably common, where only a few years ago, it never happened.

Seems like modern washers have a design flaw or something.

Pro tip: the clothes washer is not a good option for fine china. Trust me on this.
