Here's the gist of it.

Lobster traps allegedly kill whales. What with thebrooebbeing attached to the buoy. No idea how true that is, versus fishing nets.

1. Global warming has pushed more lobsters into Maine territory

2. Soon global warming will push lobsters out of Maine territory

3. Submersible lobster traps are apparently a thing, but about 5k a pop

4. Licenses are rough to come by

5. Most are unwilling to sell their boats and invest in the submersible, even though there are for the better in r he long run

Wouldn't you still need a boat to check and empty the submersible?

Ok so I can see that vertical ropes from the buoys can possibly entangle a whale but in TFA they say they have one documented nonfatal entanglement since 2004. Its seems that while it can happen it's pretty rare. I wouldn't be looking to target this group for trying to enforce current guidelines moreover I would try and work with the Maine DNR to clarify the rules and or adapt them to current data.
All whales need protection. If we had not been so stupid as to hunt them into near extinction this wouldn't be an issue. long term case of FAFO.

Marcos P: Whales need to be protected.

They absolutely do, 100% agreed.

But sometimes they go way overboard on "protection" and want perfection.

The industry there needs room to breathe. Most of those lobsterman are 1-2 boat operations. What this group is calling for is way overboard. You have to be able to support conservation and allow the industry to sustain and thrive. It's an important one to the state.

I supported everything they did for the New England fishing regulations with George's Bank and all of that. The science was there that the fish stock was collapsing. So, we cut back the industry and restricted it. I think it has mostly worked and the guys who are fishing are catching more per boat and the fish stocks are rising, mostly. That was HUGELY controversial around these parts, but it was the right thing.

I just don't see that kind of situation with the Lobster/Whale thing... Would gladly change my mind if it looked to be a lot worse than it is.

But, they need to let these guys do their job. They have been pretty good about protecting the lobsters from over fishing... i'm sure they will look for some kind of compromise.

One non-fatal entanglement in 20 years is no reason to completely shut down the industry. We live in a society, if you want to have environmental regulations that work you need to realize that they have to be balanced. If you put an entire industry out of work over the chance that a single member of an endangered species might be harmed then you're going to get political backlash and the gutting of the act, the EPA, the judiciary, or all 3.
