I'm sure if the Republicans win the house they'll pass it. Hahaha

Oh dear.

Hoyer is up for re-election and during elections he makes the rounds of the polling places.  I'm an election judge and usually get to speak with him.

I wonder if I should mention this.

FTA:  Pelosi and Hoyer have been among those prominent opponents, noting that federal law already prohibits insider trading and warning that a special ban for members of Congress might dissuade talented people from running for office.

Talented people should be able to figure out how to become rich without creating conflicts between themselves and the investments they pursue, right?

Next paragraph:  Yet the proposal has gained enormous momentum in the current Congress following revelations that scores of lawmakers have violated existing laws designed to eliminate conflicts of interest between legislators and the investments they pursue.

The goal is for the Democrats to be better than the Republicans by a margin on these issues, not practically identical despite rhetoric.

I wouldn't be so sure about MAGAt support for a ban on insider trading in Congress. TFG and his family of flying monkeys took every opportunity to enrich themselves while in office, and neither the RINOs, nor the MAGAts said anything about it. I have read many MAGAts arguing that TFG's blatant violations of the Emoluments Clause were entirely justified by TFG's status as a wealthy businessman having to sacrifice his valuable time running the Trump Organization in order to be President.

But SVR isn't the answer. Elect Democrats who believe that the role of the Government is not to enrich themselves.

Exactly this.  Are they sh*tbags?  Absolutely.

Are they nazis?  No.

There is only one answer, unless you're a nazi.

Democrats are, with an extreme minority of exceptions, spinless cowards or corrupt to the bone.

It's less bad than Nazis. But it sure ain't good. Dems have several golden opportunities to make this a blowout election for them, and instead they've pissed it away playing identity politics and harping on how they aren't Republicans.

We need to have a third branch of lawmakers specifically to regulate the actual lawmakers.

Because it seems that the only time they pass any new rules about how THEY should behave, it's in their favor.  Like giving themselves a raise.

How did we set this up that no new rules can be enforced on the lawmakers unless the lawmakers create and sign the rule?  Something that is pretty much never going to happen.

I agree but I am more cynical. The problem is inherent in the system, and no individual is just going  to change it. Once you have a job in government the next level is a promotion to lobbyist. Our best bet is a political party dedicated to the idea of no lobbying.

The Obama Admin had a policy against lobbying, but if I recall once they left office they all ended up being lobbyists anyway. It is political incest, they feed off of each other.

Here is what makes that comment completely ridiculous an pointless:  We can only vote for the people that the party puts in front of us.  If all we have is a choice between two people that are crooks, who do we vote for?

Case in point...  Take a look at the primary that gave us Dr Oz.  It was a choice between a lying hedge fund manager, ex-military, election denying gun nut, or a known snake-oil salesman and quack who doesn't even live in the state.

Those were the choices given to the voters.  And there is every chance that Oz will win the seat.

So tell me again how WE THE PEOPLE control who gets into Congress.

This type of legislation needs to be passed as part of the same bill that increases congressional salaries to $10m/year if we ever want to reduce the power of lobbyists and decrease the motivation of self-interested saboteurs.  Essentially give them a salary that lets them retire after a term or two without ever doing anything shady or feeling beholden to lobbyists.

2022-09-30 7:25:27 AM
The bill was strongly opposed by Wall Street.  They figure if Congress can't trade stocks then Wall Street lobbyists will have to go back to handing them bags full of cash.

There's maybe around a dozen politicians in the Democratic party total that are actually interested in governing or representing constituents. For most of them, it's a jobs program that's set up for after their stint at JP Morgan or Deloitte runs its course. Democrats could win every major election in a landslide easily if they actually ran on popular issues that the American voting base wants, but then they'd be expected to actually do work at their jobs and not just phone it in all day for an easy paycheck.

How about you got money to invest, my Elected Rep - then into a broad market index fund it goes.

Oh, and we cap your heavily audited income at the median of your constituents.  Maybe make you more responsive to improving their lives, their incomes.

And, maybe while we're dreaming, your health insurance and retirement benefits also match your people's. Only 60% of them have health care?  Then your plan only pays for 60% with the same godamn giant deductible. They have to plan to live in a cardboard box in their retirement years? Dining on store brand cat food?  Then so do you.

Or, you know, at least in the top 100 problems. And certainly don't get this worked up about something that is, at best, a tertiary problem that may or may not affect anyone. A typical Congress passes 500 - 1,000 bills. Most are bullshiat about naming roads and post offices, minor administrative things, etc. We get maybe 100 pieces of substantial legislation per Congress. I'd prefer we focused on things that actually make people's lives better rather than things that make people feel better.

This isn't about Democrats or Republicans. It's about the rich versus the rest of us. And some of those Democrats are also very, very rich, and their interests oppose ours. The letter after their name doesn't matter, except for the fact that Republicans don't even try to pretend they're not evil, while Democrats insist they're the moral party.

Insider trading is immoral.
