I had a call center job that was so stressful I'd come home smelling like ass some days. Stress sweat is definitely different than fun-in-the-sun sweat.

Last week, I had to deal with my mom's accountant, the IRS, and the estate lawyer. By Thursday, I was wondering why my two girls - a toy shih tsu and an Italian greyhound/chihuahua mix - had turned into velcro dogs.

Today my friend told me that her super sweet god gets real uncomfortable with emotional situations.

Like, if she's crying the dog goes and hides under the bed.  Even if she gets sad over a car commercial or something.

My one dog, a rescue from Bastrop Louisiana can tell when I'm about to have a panic attack from holding my breath (I stop breathing when I concentrate on something too hard) and will bark and claw at my arm to get me breathing again. Very handy.

Humans are dirty, filthy creatures, always secreting some smelly chemicals as a direct or indirect (via metabolism, etc) response to stimuli and/or unusual operating parameters (illness, injury, etc).

Dogs have excellent olfactory systems, so they can pick up on the minute changes to your normal smelly self and respond as they think is necessary.

Unsurprising that a dog would pick up on stress smells and try to ensure its survival by trying to calm your ass down a little.

Cats, of course, may be able to discern your emotional state either by observation or scents, but they usually just do what they want anyway and so are not to be relied upon as a comfort animal.

/I like cats and dogs
//but cats like to walk by themselves
///and dogs have more history of being bred exclusively as working and companion animals, so they have a leg up

Apropos of nothing, I had a friend with a Blue Healer. A couple of times, that dog was fast asleep, woke up, sniiffed the air, got up, and left the room. Moments later, the foulest dog fart ever would fill the room, real eye-watering stuff.
The dog farted itself awake and then felt the need to flee. Most disgusting smell I've ever smelt.
Blue healer.

When I lost my sense of smell with COVID, my dog found it for me by licking her butt, then burping it into my face.

/could smell that just fine.
