The Two Towers took on a lot of water and while the structure is good there's now a serious mold issue. I'm afraid all the carpet is going to have to go. In fact, we need to gut the entire first through third floors just to be safe. Anyway, I can be out between 8 and 6 next Tuesday, and I'll need a huge deposit up front.

Speaking of Sanibel, saw the presser by the governor, there were people who rode out the storm on Sanibel! I'm not sure how they survived but that has to be peak Florida Man/Florida Woman, riding out a strong Cat 4 on a barrier island, stunningly insane.

Same. If I had a dollar everytime I heard someone being interviewed saying "we didn't think it was supposed to be this bad..." I could've bought a house on Sanibel pre-Ian.

People always think the meterologists are exaggerating. Then when it proves to not be an exaggeration, then the same people get mad at the meterologists for "not giving them enough warning".

TLDR: People are the worst

I wonder if anyone has written a cosmic horror story about a hurricane that becomes some sort of god with a glowing blue Sauron eye, and it stays over the oceans sucking up heat and drenching coasts all over the world.  It would be indifferent to humans, it just wants more heat from the ocean to power itself.  🤔

I'm not. I actually expected this as hurricanes are powered by hot water. Once it hit the Atlantic ocean again all bets are off.

We're due for four days of storms here in VA.  I bought some emergency light bulbs and battened down some hatches.  I don't expect it to be crazy, but the power looks for any excuse to go out, so I might as well be prepared.

Yup. Although we don't have to claim it. Although I technically work for an Australian company. City workers have off and school was closed yesterday and today. I got all my prep done pretty much on Wednesday.

Heavy stuff started here in Charleston about an hour ago. Heavy rain, decent wind. Supposed to pick between 10-2.

My sister's school district closed the schools today, here in the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina. I'm not looking forward to this. At all. We got a lot of trees around here. Thankfully, it'll blow out of here (pun maybe intended?) by late tonight, early overnight tomorrow. If this was going to hang around for a while, I'd be scared shiatless.

fragMasterFlash: So do people even get a day off from work for a category 1 hurricane?

Pretty sure we'd see some closures in Chicago if we had a category 1 hurricane hit.

Of course, pretty sure that everything from the Gulf on up would be seriously farked if Chicago got hit by a Category 1 hurricane.

But seriously, we occasionally have a hurricane remnant get up here and stall out, dumping a foot of rain, and that causes a fair amount of problems. Chicago is built in a swamp, so the drainage isn't spectacular.

From the 5AM NHC Discussion.

FORECAST POSITIONS AND MAX WINDS

INIT 30/0900Z 30.8N 79.1W 75 KT 85 MPH
12H 30/1800Z 32.5N 79.3W 75 KT 85 MPH
24H 01/0600Z 34.6N 79.9W 45 KT 50 MPH...INLAND
36H 01/1800Z 36.3N 80.3W 30 KT 35 MPH...POST-TROP/EXTRATROP
48H 02/0600Z...DISSIPATED

So, landfall as a solid Category 1. Models have converged on a track, showing landfall northwest of Charleston, SC around 5PM today, through Florence, SC on the way to Rockingham, NC by 2AM Saturday as a tropical storm, then into the Peidmont Triad around noon Saturday as a post-tropical depression, then dissipating and merging into the low.

Effects on NC will be minor except for localized flooding. The South Carolina coastal region will take a solid smack but nothing like what hit the Gulf Coast of Florida.

It's always true with a hurricane but it's esp. true here. The wind isn't the killer, it's the water. Make sure you're in a position to be safe from flooding, wether that be from heavy rain or the storm surge, which is current forecast as....

STORM SURGE: The combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water could reach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated areas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...

* Edisto Beach to Little River Inlet...4-7 ft
* Little River Inlet to Cape Fear...3-5 ft
* Savannah River to Edisto Beach...3-5 ft
* Flagler/Volusia County Line to Savannah River...2-4 ft
* Cape Fear River...2-4 ft
* St. Johns River...2-4 ft
* East of Cape Fear to Duck, including Pamlico and Neuse Rivers...2-4 ft
* Patrick Air Force Base to Flagler/Volusia County Line... 1-3 ft
* Albemarle Sound...1-2 ft

A warning here is this is very tide dependent - the tidal range is close to six feet, so if the storm comes along at low tide, most of these areas are safe, at high tide, you're looking at the top end of listed ranges or worse. Good news here is that high tide at Charleston, SC is 11:15AM, low is at 5:45PM, so the storm will be hitting as the tide is ebbing.

Yeah, the folks have some new mold, and I just found where the gutter is leaking (and presumably dumping water just outside the mold creating a leak), so put down some plastic and 4 bags of mulch on top. Hope it holds up to the amount of rain we're supposed to get
