Amid reports of Russian forces threatening the safety of Ukraine's nuclear power plants and Russian President Vladimir Putin hinting he might use nuclear weapons against Ukraine, the legislation would appropriate $35 million "to prepare for and respond to potential nuclear and radiological incidents in Ukraine," according to a bill summary.

If Putin were to use a nuke in Ukraine, something tells me $35M is not going to even come close to helping.  Aren't even Russia's probably outdated nuclear weapons many hundreds -- if not thousands -- of times stronger in terms of destructive power than the ones that literally flattened whole cities in WW2?

I'm just surprised Republicans didn't get in the way of it by pulling some of their usual obstructive bullshiat just so they can look good to their voters. "See? We TOLD you everything about government is bad!" Meanwhile, thousands of workers get sent home without pay.

Republican voters, "yay!"

Government budgets have no corollary to household or business budgets and the sooner we start to accept that the better off we'll be.

Ragin' Asian: their social contract

"In regard to the so-called social contract: I have often had occasion to protest that I haven't even seen the contract, much less been asked to consent to it. A valid contract requires voluntary offer, acceptance, and consideration. I've never received an offer from my rulers, so I certainly have not accepted one; and rather than consideration, I have received nothing but contempt from the rulers, who, notwithstanding the absence of any agreement, have indubitably threatened me with grave harm in the event that I fail to comply with their edicts."

They all end up being paid for not working. They get welfare checks.

Yeah. I mean , do we really need air traffic controllers? That seems like socialism to me. Why can't those brave pilots just be rugged individuals ?

They are essential, so they are required to show up and will be paid. Always have been, always will be.

If Putin were to use a nuke (singular) in Ukraine, most of the rest of the world would officially and formally declare war on Russia within 24 hours, and nobody would bat an eyelid when nukes (plural) are used throughout Russia by various nations.

Budgets do not exist because money does not exist. You bust your ass at your job for absolutely no reason. Tou

It does not matter either way because money is as real as the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus or long term happiness.

Unemployment checks.  Because all of the people who suddenly stop getting paid were previously employed and then are now unemployed.

It then gets into a whole thing depending on if the agreement to pay them happens before unemployment checks have to be released.

If they get paid from unemployment then get backpay then a bunch of overpayments are written.  Entirely forseeable overpayments because Republicans like to shut down the government and waste a lot of money doing so.   Nothing every gets accomplished and it doesn't even make good political sense because nobody blames anyone other than the Republicans for it because historically they've always been the ones to try and shut down the government in the last 30 years.  It's just being alignment chaotic stupid.

One big problem: large bombs are generally fission-triggered fusion bombs. they depend on tritium, which has a half-life of 6.2 years. So, bombs going back to the USSR days would be down to 3% yield at this point.  I doubt any are that out of date, but given the level of grifting in Russia under Putin (who has been in power as President or Prime Minister since 1999) I doubt if the money to rebuild the arsenal was used for that purpose.

They need to get rid of this stupid process. They already voted to spend the money so what is the point?

Furloughed federal employees qualify for funemployment, but since they get back pay (welfare checks for not working) they have to pay back any funemployment benefits.

If I ran the government, any/all furloughed employees would not be paid for not working. They were laid off and did not work. There is zero reason to pay them for not working.

How about so they don't have to face financial uncertainty due to no fault of their own in their public service job that they probably already took a pay cut to do? There's a reason.

It's stop-gap spending season again?  So soon?

Gotta love when the congress-critters justify their phony baloney existence by pretending to keep the government running 2 weeks at a time up until the election.

They've so predictable you could set a cesium-133 atom by their regularity.

They are not working because some stupid politicians decided it would be fun to lay them off temporarily to make some asinine political point. They weren't fired, and they would be doing their jobs if they were allowed to. You think giving them nothing is the solution?

Yeah, definitely. Regular as clockwork. That's why the last one was four years ago, because it happens every election season.
