As Biden has stated directly more than once, he's the president, even for the folks who don't like him. Trump never understood that, because he simply can't grasp doing something that doesn't somehow benefit himself.

Hopefully DeSantis acts like a grownup in this one moment and extends his hand towards Biden for the good of the people in his state. Heard a press conference with DeSantis a day or two before Ian hit. He said:

State officials have determined that 246 people died for reasons related to the freeze and power grid failure last February that left many Texans without heat and electricity for days, though outside experts have said the victim count is probably much higher.
...
Hypothermia and frostbite accounted for 65% of the deaths state officials counted.

Game theory and plenty of observation show 'tit for tat' is a good strategy.

Continually helping people who have proven they will gladly watch you suffer and die is not a good social behaviour.  You're just enabling them, giving them a better chance to fark you over in the future.

Maybe some sort of middle ground is possible - tying aid to a contract return the favor or never receive aid again - and if so would be a good idea.

Rewarding bad behavior reinforces it.

If they're not returning his calls he could get through all 30 of them in like 5 minutes.

During a disaster or any serious national tragedy, 95% of the President's time is spent calling people. That's all he does. He doesn't organize the Weeners/help/safety/relief efforts, he doesn't arrange logistics and time schedules -- he's got people and departments and agencies to do all that.

His job is to call local leaders and assure them.

It's actually one of the few things Biden is probably the best in the world at, because nobody knows how to deal with grief and trauma better than him.

Google "site:www.fark.com texas power". I'd sure hate for some Floridian who was calling for everyone in San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso to freeze to death to suddenly need a little assistance. Or any thread about hurricane relief in New Orleans, for that matter.

They live in Florida. The state is barely above sea level. Can't even dig out a basement without a lot of engineering. If people suffer and die? GOOD. Serves 'em right.

No, I think it's important to remind people that ghouls on this site celebrated the death of my friend Gene. See, Gene was a musician- he played boogie-woogie piano, and he was good at it. For some reason that could only be traced to personal politics, he lived in the live music capital of North America. And at some point during those 4 days when we were living like it was 1870, Gene froze to death in a cheap Austin apartment that didn't have a fireplace, insulation appropriate for harsh winter weather, or electricity.

And a large number of posters here were completely OK with that, because of Texas' state-level politics. Said he deserved it. So, yeah, I'm still bitter. Anyway, here's Gene.

"Oh, no, we didn't mean an actual person who died. We just meant the concept of people in a geographic region dying. See, that's funny."

Why do I paint with a broad brush? Because no one else in the community thought they needed to bother to speak up. And when people tell you who they really are, don't argue with them.

Well I've seen Farkers called out for precisely that type of heartlessness.  However, they are frequently they are automatically or manually ignored as trolls.  Why not direct your anger to the people that actually caused your friend's death?

It's possible to both be angry at the people that wrote the policies and those that celebrated the deaths, it's not an either/or thing.

backhand.slap.of.reason: DeSantis will get more from Biden than any Democrat ever would.  Democrats kiss the hands that slap them.

That's true.   Bill Clinton was always looking for the person who despised him the most and would do anything to make that person like him, and everyone knew it.   I'm not sure if that's a character flaw or w/e, but it's a darn sight better than what the GOP players are about.

We weren't even hit that hard by the storm I'm shocked by all the wind damage and that we still don't have electricity. It's the longest outage I've seen, but hurricane...

Word is Biden personally called every elected official in the state yesterday. Not a single one returned his call, except for one: The lone Democrat.

lol every elected official? that would be a neat trick.

"every elected official" would include every sherif among many many other people.

Sometimes it's hard to be moral.

Oh I did. I do. I fought then as hard as I could, and then I rage-quit Texas and moved my family to Virginia for the safety of our LGBTQ daughter.

But that doesn't mean I can't also call out people who go from "that didn't happen, but in yellow" to "non-story, overzealous staffer" in the course of a single thread. And it's not personal, I've enjoyed and agreed with your commentary over the years. This is just one area where the regulars tend to get a little tunnel vision if it doesn't personally affect them.

Like new Orleans does everything they flood?  No you build walls, high walls, these people love walls.  And when that wall fails it will be complete and almost instant destruction.

Well that should be easy to prove.

I mean I believe that people said that Texas got the politicians people wanted, who made those choices that lead to people freezing to death, and as far as anyone can tell will still continue to re-elect those same folks and don't appear to hold those responsible accountable for the deaths that not just happened, but were avoidable. I don't think anyone said 'well I hope Gene dies, he has it coming' but I didn't read all the comments at the time.

It would be kinda ghoulish to take your ire of a friend dying and to use their death to waggle your finger at some internet randos instead of, I don't know, the people who made the decisions that lead to your friends death and did fark all afterwards about preventing it from happening again.

But hey everyone grieves different.
