Hopefully DeSantis acts like a grownup in this one moment and extends his hand towards Biden for the good of the people in his state. And then, like they did to that amorphous mass of flab from Jersey when he worked with Obama, his party can castigate, excoriate, and excommunicate him before he follows up on his greater than zero chance to be president.

As Biden has stated directly more than once, he's the president, even for the folks who don't like him. Trump never understood that, because he simply can't grasp doing something that doesn't somehow benefit himself.

Heard a press conference with DeSantis a day or two before Ian hit. He said:

"We're prepared to share all information with the White House if they're interested."

Like the Biden administration is really so petty as not to be interested in helping out people who are in middle of a natural disaster.

Florida would be one of the best states for a great rewilding project.  Lots of biological diversity, still, a lush climate that will quickly overgrow our damage, and now the demolition is off to a good start.  It could be one of the great wildlife refuges of the world, with all that coast and all that area to expand.

All right, Floridians, it's time to give back, like you're always talking about, but never do, because you're way too arrogant for that.  Florida is being handed back to nature.  The Villages--yeah, get the fark out of there.

If they're not returning his calls he could get through all 30 of them in like 5 minutes.

During a disaster or any serious national tragedy, 95% of the President's time is spent calling people. That's all he does. He doesn't organize the Weeners/help/safety/relief efforts, he doesn't arrange logistics and time schedules -- he's got people and departments and agencies to do all that.

Reminder that many home insurance companies went bankrupt or left Florida in recent years and because DeSantis was too busy with political stunts that they had to call a special session to deal with it...which wont take effect until next year.

If you're looking to buy property a bunch of foreclosures there are probably going to be available soon.

Lumbar Puncture: Reminder that many home insurance companies went bankrupt or left Florida in recent years and because DeSantis was too busy with political stunts that they had to call a special session to deal with it...which wont take effect until next year.

If you're looking to buy property a bunch of foreclosures there are probably going to be available soon.

"Don't buy real estate in Florida."  Isn't just my go-to doom-n-gloom climate change quip; it's also good advice.

Game theory and plenty of observation show 'tit for tat' is a good strategy.

Continually helping people who have proven they will gladly watch you suffer and die is not a good social behaviour.  You're just enabling them, giving them a better chance to fark you over in the future.

Maybe some sort of middle ground is possible - tying aid to a contract return the favor or never receive aid again - and if so would be a good idea.

Rewarding bad behavior reinforces it.

theToadMan: cryinoutloud: Florida would be one of the best states for a great rewilding project.

They may have no choice but to rewild Florida. There is only 2 or 3 insurers left that will actually insure a home in Florida. They will most likely be bankrupt after this.
Next step is banks refusing mortgages if homes cannot be insured.

As far as I know you cannot get a morgage without insurance.  What company would do that?  You cant even get a car loan without insurance.
If insurers move out of Florida it will have to be subsidized by the government.....  you know socialism.

The sky is always some sort of sideways depending what part of the world you are in. Example: South Pole the sky is upside-down. Look at the globe (which is spherical, not flat!)

No, I think it's important to remind people that ghouls on this site celebrated the death of my friend Gene. See, Gene was a musician- he played boogie-woogie piano, and he was good at it. For some reason that could only be traced to personal politics, he lived in the live music capital of North America. And at some point during those 4 days when we were living like it was 1870, Gene froze to death in a cheap Austin apartment that didn't have a fireplace, insulation appropriate for harsh winter weather, or electricity.

And a large number of posters here were completely OK with that, because of Texas' state-level politics. Said he deserved it. So, yeah, I'm still bitter. Anyway, here's Gene.

State officials have determined that 246 people died for reasons related to the freeze and power grid failure last February that left many Texans without heat and electricity for days, though outside experts have said the victim count is probably much higher.
...
Hypothermia and frostbite accounted for 65% of the deaths state officials counted.

Well that should be easy to prove.

I mean I believe that people said that Texas got the politicians people wanted, who made those choices that lead to people freezing to death, and as far as anyone can tell will still continue to re-elect those same folks and don't appear to hold those responsible accountable for the deaths that not just happened, but were avoidable. I don't think anyone said 'well I hope Gene dies, he has it coming' but I didn't read all the comments at the time.

It would be kinda ghoulish to take your ire of a friend dying and to use their death to waggle your finger at some internet randos instead of, I don't know, the people who made the decisions that lead to your friends death and did fark all afterwards about preventing it from happening again.

But hey everyone grieves different.

Why do I paint with a broad brush? Because no one else in the community thought they needed to bother to speak up. And when people tell you who they really are, don't argue with them.

Well I've seen Farkers called out for precisely that type of heartlessness.  However, they are frequently they are automatically or manually ignored as trolls.  Why not direct your anger to the people that actually caused your friend's death?

It's possible to both be angry at the people that wrote the policies and those that celebrated the deaths, it's not an either/or thing.

Maybe that thread would have been the more appropriate thread to call that shiat out in.  He might have had some allies.  Certainly, if anyone is celebrating the now 17 deaths in Florida, I will join him/her in calling them out as assholes.

Gonz: whidbey: Gonz: I don't believe what I just wrote, by the way. It was just cathartic to lash out. Because a lot of people on this site were definitely calling for death in February 2021.

It's a troll.

Block it.

My very progressive, and very gay daughter lives in Austin with her wife. I very much understand you.

Doesn't that technically include you also?

dylanthomas: So as it turns out Ron sent those migrants to Mass for their own safety, what a nice guy.

On Monday I literally told my aunt that she and her husband should go to the nearest state government office and present themselves as Venezuelan refugees as the fastest way out of Florida.

// She said she'd have to drive to Texas for that to work.

Oh I did. I do. I fought then as hard as I could, and then I rage-quit Texas and moved my family to Virginia for the safety of our LGBTQ daughter.

But that doesn't mean I can't also call out people who go from "that didn't happen, but in yellow" to "non-story, overzealous staffer" in the course of a single thread. And it's not personal, I've enjoyed and agreed with your commentary over the years. This is just one area where the regulars tend to get a little tunnel vision if it doesn't personally affect them.

I'mma shut up now.

mrshowrules: Lumbar Puncture: Well that should be easy to prove.

I was posting in some of those threads.  I don't discount the possibility of 1 or 2 trolls saying horrible shiat.  I imagine some people posting that Texans reap what you sow when you elect someone like Abbott but I certainly don't recall Farkers celebrating the death of anyone.

Should be easy for them to show then and call out specific users, otherwise they're doing great at making a current ongoing tragedy into complaining that someone was mean to them in a Fark thread in the past.

Well I still don't think it technically happened as you described but I agree that posting that "didn't happen" meme was a douche move and I apologize for that.  Also, sorry for your friend.  He had a pretty amazing life though.  Seems like he touched lots of people.

I was there calling out those assholes and favoriting them in derp orange since they are basically left-wing Trumpy Bears.

I have a subscription.

Just for the free cologne samples.

No, but really, it's a good read sometimes.

LOL, this is very true, but my perspective differs.  They offered me a yearly subscription for like $8 two years ago, so I took them up on it.  It was nice to see the glossy pictures and read the many good articles on physical media, but I did not renew, because I can find most of the good stuff online, without being besieged by fragrance.

cryinoutloud: Florida would be one of the best states for a great rewilding project.

You "live" in a state that is notorious for their vehicle registration laws that allow thousands of obscenely rich assholes to dodge taxes on expensive cars, trucks and RVs.

Put the stones back in your pocket. You might need that glass house in a month or two when it's -30° out.

I do live here.

I work in the medical field (we'll leave it at that, but I'm not stupid).  Lot's of people in this region do, btw.

Hinged didn't deny being stupid or a liar.  I construe that to mean he admits he's both.
