the vast majority of celebrities i've encountered was at the grocery store.   (They all gotta eat, and they ain't on the level of paying a lackey to go shopping for them).   Stood directly behind Diceman in line.    He looked superchill in a tank top, huge glasses, paid with cash from a money clip, and he was being his normal gregarious self.   He wasn't doing the Dice-man act, and i don't even think most people there knew who he even was, but you could just tell it was his nature to leave an imprint to people whereever he went.

Man I actually saw an interview with that guy just a few days ago that kind of bothered me.  He claimed to have been "persecuted" (he used that word) for his comedy by feminists and whatnot in the 90s.

The tragedy of that guy is that he's actually a decent actor... but I gotta assume he's a gigantic asswipe.

See, the thing is... I hated that song. I'd blotted it out entirely, but, no, you HAD to drag it back into my forebrain. Now I'm gonna have to go soak my synapses in useful music as an earworm antivenin.

I saw him do standup a few years back.  he absolutely destroyed.  he wasn't "Dice", at least he wasn't dressed like that.  it was really funny relationship humor, a few just random jokes and as his hour was about up, only the last 5 minutes did he "become" Dice.  "Alright, I know whatcha came FOR, you FILTHY farkIN ANIMALS!"  spun around, lit a cigarette, spun back, "they told me I couldn't smoke onstage.  NEVAH TELL THE DICEMAN WHAT HE CAN, AND CANNOT DO!

"hickory dickory dock!"  the whole audience roared it back.  he did a few more nursey rhymes, went all Dice for about 10 minutes, than it was good night to standing ovation.  there were moments where every joke he told, had 2,500 people just dying.  it was a masterclass in comedy.  Id definitely go see him again.

I never cared much for his "comedy", but his Showtime show "Dice" was really good.  He was quite endearing playing himself in the same nutso way Nicolas Cage does.   He was totally self-deprecating as a past-his-prime has been who idiotically self-sabotaged himself every step of the way.  It really worked, and using Vegas as a setting for a post-celebrity show was smart (in the same way it's used in Hacks).  Of course, Showtime cancelled it after 2 seasons, but it's worth a watch.

There was a bit of a bruhaha when he went on SNL.

Both Cast member Nora Dunn and Musical Guest Sinead O'Connor boycotted the show, due to the misogynistic and homophobic jokes Dice told.

Dice has always maintained that "Diceman" was a character, but Dunn dissagreed

, ""He just wasn't smart enough to handle that material," she said of Clay in 2015. "And our writing staff was not the writing staff to handle that material either [for him to host the show]. I was well aware of that guy's so-called 'work.' He had been a comedian for many years, and he gradually became Andrew Dice Clay, and he got more and more into it and he lost his way because he wasn't smart enough."
MHO, Dice was similar to Jeff Foxworthy "You might be a Redneck", he had a bit that made him famous, but did not have anything else. Once people got bored with the "Dirty Mother Goose" he was forgotten.

IMHO: once people got bored with Dirty Mother Goose people stop coming.  It just happened that his bad press happens at the same time his popularity waned

Some of my favorite Diceisms:

"Why are you the way you are?"

"I know that Harry Belafonte freed the slaves in 1942."

"Why? Because you're a jerkoff."

"Champeen."

"Stick me, Frankie! Gimme tha goo!"

"You know, those two chunks of flesh that shiat tumble out of!"

The Day the Laughter Died is underrated. And aptly titled.

he said on a podcast a few years ago, instead of making a "good" comedy album, he wanted to see how far he could to, to antagonize the audience.  half of the fun is hearing the crowds groan.  it is legit funny, but damn right it pushes the audience  he'd be like, "if the crowds liked the 'good stuff', we wouldn't record.  if we got the sense they hated me, or hated the material, "hit record, boys!"

Darth_Lukecash: Dice has always maintained that "Diceman" was a character, but Dunn dissagreed

i don't want to sound like some kind of Dice historian or fanboi, but yeah, Dice was absolutely a character.  that's how he got his start.  he got his break by doing "Stayin'  Alive era John Travolta, Jerry Lewis's "The Nutty Professor", and other goofy characters.  he was an impressionist.  He says Dice was a composite of the various knuckleheads he grew up with.  people loved the character, adn so he began doing less of the other chracters and went Full Dice.

funny part is, he says the Irish guys claimed him, and hated the Italians for claiming him.  "And the Italian guys hated the Irish guys for claiming him.  I'M FREAKIN' JEWISH, YOU'RE BOTH WRONG, JERKOFFS!"

That's what limited his career, then.  Had he came on SNL and did a whole bunch of impressions, or constantly framed "Diceman" as a character, then he wouldn't anchored to a character

i bathe in your sweet tears!

Darth_Lukecash: Had he came on SNL and did a whole bunch of impressions, or constantly framed "Diceman" as a character, then he wouldn't anchored to a character

no, by then he was officially "Dice" full time.  I mean the first 2-3 years as a struggling comic, or i should say, comic struggling to 'break', he was an impressionist.  then as I said Dice got such a huge reaction, he chased the laughs.  as someone noted above, in Pretty In Pink (what, 1985?) he's full Dice.  SNL wasn't until 1989 or so.  Bringing back Nutty Professor, Travolta, the other characters, would have 'harmed' the Dice brand.

again, no historian or whatever but, it was a character he got so far into, but then people stopped caring.  show me the rich history of the, whatever, 1995 through 2015 Dice films and comedy albums.  he basically gave it up.  he'll do it but, he just gave it up.

saw him around 2016 and as i said, it was "straight" comedy.  nothing "Dice-y".  stuff that wouldn't have been out of place at a Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Louis CK (naming comics I've seen) show.  a few f bombs here adn there, nothing overtly sexual, nothing *clutch your pearls, Scorpitron* "MISOGYNISTIC", just comedy.  only the very last, as i said, 5,7,10 minutes of an hour long (prob more like 90) minute show did he do "the greatest hits".  I mean, had he not done "Dice", it would have been one of the greatest live comedy shows I've seen (admittedly a small list, but the point is made).

/Marc Maron, Tommy davidson, I think David Spade, Frank Caliendo (speaking of impressionists, he's uncanny), Jay Mohr 4-5 times, Jay Leno, and a ton of live specials.  (and I think Steve Martin but i was only like 8 years old so i can't really claim that! not even sure if it was him.
