Shaggy_C: "Williamson had just started a new job as a package handler at a Charms Candy warehouse a week prior, "

"They said that if you have two no-calls, meaning you just didn't show up to your shift, then after that they get rid of you"

So he had been there a total of one week and had already no-showed once, then sends them a picture of a flat tire and says something along the lines of "there was a shooter yesterday, sorry I'm stressed now, not coming in."

Hmm...If you're the boss in that situation, are you giving benefit of the doubt?

Yes, because I'm not a complete shiat human being.

Given the cost of firing him, interviewing and hiring a replacement vs simply having that conversation with the employee, I'd probably at least try and look up a news story about a shooting before I just assumed he was lying to me.

You quoted the article, which strongly implies you intentionally skipped this part:

"They said that if you have two no-calls, meaning you just didn't show up to your shift, then after that they get rid of you," Williamson said. "They just said that as long as we contact the supervisor and HR about why we're not there, we will be fine, which I did both times."

the slow slide to corporate fascism.
/ it moves slowly so you won't notice unless you are paying attention.
// fascism and corporitism work hand in hand
/// you are just a cog of/in the wheel of corporate fascism
but don't pay attention to me, just keep looking at Facebook.

This guy must have been the worst employee. Calling off from work once would be ignored by most bosses. This may have been the 20th time he has FA with work and now he is FO. Decent employees are hard to find. You don't dump them over a single issue like this.

Yes because I appreciate exploiting a tragedy as an excuse to get out of going to work.

That's so weird that you suspect that, because they explicitly discuss how he started the week prior in the article and he preemptively called HR, who assured him he wouldn't be fired for the thing he was fired for.

If being involved in an active shooter incident stresses you out that much you're gonna have a hard time making it in America.

You don't have to be directly involved with an active shooter incident to be affected by it.

This was in 1989. My mother worked as a delivery driver for this shop. She is the delivery girl who had just left for a delivery moments before the shooting. I was working for a funeral home at the time and got a phone call that my mother had been shot. I hauled ass to the emergency room and was relieved to find out she had come back to the shop to discover an active crime scene and she had a breakdown. Shooting events have a rippling effect that affects many people. She got her concealed carry after that and always carried her firearm with her. Unfortunately the owners daughter, Gwen, died. She was shot in the back of the head and the bullet was found in her stomach, which means she swallowed it, after she was shot. JoAnn and Mary somehow survived.

So I don't give the benefit of the doubt to the employer for firing the guy. This wasn't the time to do that.

Well, he did say he's a data analyst.  He never claimed to be able to read.
