We've got an EPA Superfund site / gigantic slag pile sitting right next to the river. The nearby mountain was defoliated and has only recently (past few decades) begun to recover because of extreme cleanup efforts. There is clearly a lot of shame as it is treated like an open secret.

PA also occasionally likes to yeet it at nearby valleys to incorporate entire towns into the floodwaters like some kind of farked up game of Katamari Damacy.

And putting dumps right next to rivers before setting them alight is a time-honored tradition there.

Something to tell people about. With how low its been lately you could come back and do a walk on the Lehigh.

Considering the Valley's industrial history and the things that currently border the river (sewage plant, power plant, landfill) I'm surprised anyone sets foot in it. Which is a pity, because overall the area is lovely.
