Next thing you know, Russia will be accusing Ukraine of war crimes for killing all these civilians who they sent to the front lines.

I'm predicting record numbers of surrenders in the coming weeks

When an evil man threatens to kill you if you don't try to kill a third party that will almost certainly kill you in self defense... You have a fairly easy ethical problem to solve.

You're going to die, you can choose to try and kill the person putting you in that situation or you can try to kill the innocent 3rd party.

God, I almost feel sorry for the poor slobs.

The moment they stick the gun in your hand they should be going for revolution instead of being willing to die in the mud some place they've never even seen before. Propaganda probably done some work on several of them, but a lot likely also know the truth. Thing is, when your life is literally on the line, you tend to weigh things a lot more critically.

Lot of people will say they'd do this or that from the comfort of a keyboard, like I am now, but it's a whole other thing when you're actually standing there.

Dark humor is a military staple but hearing something like that "I don't know shiat either" portion of this address from a commanding officer (above a butter bar) would have given the no-nothing 22 year old Lance Corporal me a bit of a pause.

I'm pretty convinced that Putin's foray into Ukraine is just a giant 'You see Ivan' living art meme.

It's amazing.  This is where Russia's military is at this point, and this war was entirely their choice.

And here I thought it was shiatty when the US was sending troops to Iraq without body armor... this is a whole other level.

There was a story earlier in the week talking about how Putin, and the media, was shielding the majority of people from this war for the last 7 months and now that this conscription is coming people in Russia are like "war? what war?" and sh*tting their pants over it.  They have been told for the entirety of the way effort that the Ukrainians were Nazis and that the Russian military was easily winning and now those people are being conscripted and realizing that neither of those things are true.  Putin has spend decades now talking about how they have a 'professional military' that would never require this level of sacrifice by the people and that illusion is failing now too with the number of officers being fired, killed, or captured.

The issue still remains that Putin has total control of the media, military and police.  Until 2 of those 3 decide it's time for him to go, nothing will change.  I have said before on here that the only thing that will fix this is an officer, who can get close to Putin, finding his balls and pulling the trigger.

Ukraine is gonna have to do a massive air drop of flyers to tell Russians how to surrender w/o getting killed. Buying all the ink cartridges to print that stuff should eat up most of Kyiv's military budget. And that's when Russia will finally be able to strike. Chessmate.

I think we've seen enough of modern Russia to know it's a pretty rough culture that produces some...troubled people. I wonder whether all of these Russian soldiers will be able to integrate into Ukrainian culture and maybe become better people? Or will they be a net negative for their new home?

Has this been confirmed as authentic?  The audio seems off to me.  Constant random background chatter, the voice of the speaker is blaringly loud and clear...  not what I would expect from a Russian parade ground PA system.  Not to mention that the text of the speech was a bit over the top.

Considering we're not even a year in to this thing, winter is coming real soon, and the rest of the circumstances. I strongly suspect by this time next year Putin is dead via some means. Russia doesn't have another 12 months of this in them. They just don't. Their supply lines are already destroyed so bad they can't even get gauze for their troops. At this point, they're just sending men to slaughter. They're fighting with infantry, Ukraine is being fed drones by our military. Those men are going to die never even seeing the faces of the Ukrainians and United forces that kill them.

Eventually, when only the extremely old, extremely young, sick, and women are left back home, along with local police forces and conscription officers, well, where will Russia be then? Because they're heading there, quickly.

Well, theirs kinda do...

An old family friend taught video surveillance to military and law enforcement back in the 90s. Nightshot was a new feature on Sony cameras; other than those few models, there weren't a lot of inexpensive night vision devices available to government agencies. But there was a mid-90s surge of surplus Soviet equipment hitting second-hand and surplus markets. Sure enough, some students from a very underfunded agency (a Tribal police department I believe) brought a couple of Soviet night scopes to class. It was all their agency could afford, and they wanted to know if they could actually use them for video. The instructor looked at the scopes, removed the eyepieces, dug through his tackle box of adapters, and adapted them to the filter threads on their old tape camcorders. They were very happy, and allegedly they recorded pretty decent video with them.

A few months later, he was renewing his business insurance. It was normal boilerplate stuff for consulting instructors except for one *very* specific clause--under no circumstances would he be insurable if he allowed Soviet-made night vision equipment in his classrooms. When he asked why, he learned that those same Soviet scopes had been getting picked up at gun shows, surplus stores, etc., and the users were getting very serious radiation burns. Naturally he called his former students and told them to "call the guys in the lead pajamas."

Turns out their night scopes were made... well, made about as well as everything else we've seen this year.

Because they have nukes.  And at one point in history, they had the ability to deliver them anywhere in the world.  They still have nukes, but who knows how many of them will still detonate and how many of them have been stolen and stripped down.  Who knows whether they have the ability to fuel their missiles or whether the missiles will manage to get out of the silos before they fail.

I remember an instructor I had in a wilderness survival course. I was there with about 20 other people and this dude, obviously out of shape and I think drunk, comes up and just starts talking and saying shiat that was obviously wrong. He is supposed to be leading the group into the wilderness, but he starts saying crazy shiat like "some of you may die" and "I am in no shape to do any of this". We are all looking at each other with the biggest WTF looks on our faces.

He eventually starts mumbling and just wanders away. Thankfully someone else came out of the cabin and whispered to him and took him inside and then came back out and basically said "ok folks, um Sam is not feeling well, so we are gonna start over. I am gonna take you out and another guide is on their way here and they will be joining us. I don't need to know what Sam said to you all, you just need to forget everything he said".

This seems like a similar situation... except I don't think another dude is coming to relieve the commander and these guys are really farked.

Putin doesn't seem to have considered the consequences of starting a long war against Ukraine.
This conflict is killing Russia, and it's just getting worse. Average Russians are even firebombing enlistment centers now.

A company I worked for back in the 70's hired a guy from a headhunter firm to be our boss.  It turned out that he subscribed to this style of "Leadership".  The company fired him after 89 days so they wouldn't have to pay the headhunter firm.

It was the longest 89 days of my life.
