The weird irony that unaffordable, debt-funded tax cuts for the rich will still smash a lot of rich people as their investments collapse (bonds crashing, the pound crashing, financial markets screaming) is not lost on me. Lots of "high income earners" rely on debt-laden investments for their wealth. If your business goes under because your customers stop spending and the banks seize everything, you're not a high income earner anymore, you're far worse off than you were pre-tax-cut and there's nothing to even "trickle down".

Boris was a tool leading a government of Tories determined to sponge off the system (giving their girlfriends taxpayer funded jobs in return for some unenthusiastic rumpy-pumpy for example) and get away with abusive behaviour but this clusterfark is far bigger than anything he managed, and that includes Brexit. And Truss has been in the job for only a few weeks?

BBC factual entertainment and events lead commissioner Clare Mottershead added that "we need to make big television that grabs the attention" of youngsters away from rivals such as TikTok.

That ain't happening, youngsters spend 90% of their screen time face down in their phones.

Trickle down is so dead as a concept that it makes investors flee at the first sight of it.  It's clearly a cash grab by a few rich people and nothing more.  It's not a growth model for an economy.

Lost in all the talk of "tax cuts for the rich!" is that the government has just launched a staggeringly expensive bill that caps people's electricity bills for two years, benefitting millions of average and poor families, and has given those same poor and average workers tax cuts. But of course some people ignore all that and only look at the income tax cut for high earners.
The fact that those high earners will still be paying far higher tax rates than American high earners under Biden is also ignored? What is an appropriate tax rate for high earners? 40% too low? Then why is the US rate 37%? In fact when you add the 3.5% National Insurance paid alongside income tax those high earners will be paying 43.5%, way higher than the US.
Low earners got a tax cut as well, and that 1% cut will cost the government far more than scrapping the top rate. And don't forget in the UK you don't even start paying tax until you earn £12500 and are only taxed on your income above that. Don't Americans have to pay tax on every dollar?

We'll just have to wait and see what happens over the coming months and years. I'm reminded of Black Wednesday where the hysteria was just as much.
And interesting about Black Wednesday. The UK economy almost instantly recovered and started a decade of growth that lasted until the crash in 2008.

Why? We have universal healthcare, gun control, our abortion rights aren't being taken away, not are birth control rights under threat. Here it was a Conservative government that legalised gay marriage, and we haven't just had a literall violent coup attempt.

No, Truss will be worse, if she lasts long enough. She has a vision of herself as a modern day Margaret Thatcher, one of recent  history's most despised politicians. And seemingly, she sees that vision being measured by her stubbornness, and reluctance to change her mind - it's a lethal cocktail, when you realise how completely thick she is. The next few months or years are going to be absolutely hilarious.

The Prime Minister who saved the UK from terminal decline?

Some of can (just about) remember the seventies when we has rolling power cuts, endless strikes, had to be bailed out by the IMF etc and the widely accepted consensus was that the UK was doomed and all anyone could do was manage the inevitable decline.
The Thatcher reforms turned the UK around and barring the ERM/Black Wednesday disaster (a pro EU policy) turned the UK back into a thriving successful and thriving economy.
No wonder the left and the intellectual elite hate her. As Orwell said seventy years ago no one hates England as much as the English intelligentsia.
They still blame her for things like closing all the coal mines when in reality more mines closed under Labour than her government.

People campaigned for something and got it. The system worked. That's how it is supposed to work.

Are you saying politicians should just ignore the wishes of the people?
