The Ukrainians weren't letting people leave either but at least they are the invaded people not the perpetrators of war crimes.

That could be the cleverest thing they have done all war.

Today's draft offices, tomorrow's bonfires.

Fair enough. Give them a weapon, carry them all the way to Ukraine and watch them surrender. And/or kill some Russian officials on their way.

I'm not that clear on how the draft offices work. Presumably if the Russian government was going to literally capture and drag away men of fighting age they wouldn't need to do it right at the border, they'd be doing it straight out of people's homes. Who's lining up to leave the country and then thinking, "hmm, I might just check out that draft office and see if they've got some vacancies for military service"?

Plus oblig draft office meme about "mobile infantry made me the man I am today"...

Those people should try murdering anyone working in the draft office. Yes, I am technically exhorting illegal acts, but they would be morally righteous illegal acts - which are really just the absolute best kind of illegal acts.

Drafting people doesn't usually involve dragging people from their homes by force. They usually send you a letter telling you to show up at the draft office at a certain date.

Yeah, somebody is confusing "draft" with "press gang conscription".

Sure, I get that, but I'm still not getting the mobile draft offices at the border. If people are leaving the counrty rather than going to the draft office, they're going to walk right past the mobile draft office too surely?

I think the point is to have people there voluntolding people into the draft offices before they hit the border.  The other country can't do shid because it's still Russian soil.

They have to go through passport check. At which point they can be told "I see you've missed your appointment at your local draft office. No worries. Step aside and someone will be around shortly to escort you to the mobile draft office we've conveniently set up right here."

I cannot help thinking that letting "draft refugees" into western nations may be a mistake. It would be an excellent opportunity for putin to plant malcontents and trouble-makers and criminals and fifth-columnists in the west to stir up trouble.

/remember the Mariel boatlift?
//one-half of one percent of 10,000 refugees would be enough to organize at least a little havoc wherever they land
///send them back into russia to sort things out there

Considering all of the bordering countries are stopping all entry from Russia, except for these with legitimate business reasons, this is like shooting conscripts in a tank.

In the original book, Rico runs into him taking a walk with two fully functional robotic legs. He confronts him about the whole thing. Turns out he got hit by a car during his service, and takes off his legs to haze anyone on the fence about joining.

I bet the goal of these draft offices is equal parts to press-gang meat for the grinder and to discourage Russians from fleeing.  A bit of, if you don't join up we will imprison your entire family right here and now. And a bit of, now that your son is in the army, if you leave the country we will execute your son as a political and a spy.

And don't forget the revolution of 1905, which was marked by mutinies by soldiers and sailors (like on the Potemkin) fed up with the Russo-Japanese war.

But they do have guns. There are 17 millions guns in private hands in Russia. Thee Russian army is 1 million men active duty.

I asked a gun nut just yesterday why the Russians hadn't thrown off Putin. I got 1. he's not a tyrant and 2. we do the same stuff. Sure putinb murders journow b-b-but what about Assange? We locked up many blm protestors - overnight, charges dropped -that's just like putin tossing 10,000 in prison
