It all stems from her gamble to spur economic growth and combat what many experts say could be a long recession, spearheaded by a grim winter in which some families could struggle to pay for energy and food.

Yes, what better way to lower the price of food and fuel imports than to crash the pound.

The old conservative solution to problems being 'cut taxes' is the dumbest thing since religion.

The Economist decided not to beat around the bush and just called the whole scheme stupid. In less than a month Kwarteng has proven himself to be even more of a clown than Boris Johnson.  That's not easy to do.

It certainly is for the inflation problem! Injecting more cash into an inflation laden system brings on more inflation. See the Inflation Reduction Act, Covid programs etc

It's almost like the goal of conservatism is to stuff all the wealth from any nation it infests into the pockets of people who were born with more money than they could use in several lifetimes.

Then the solution is to spread the wealth around. Redistribute it, as it were, instead of letting it stagnate at the top so a handful of egotistical sociopaths can make their numbers bigger at the expense of every other human on the planet.

With all the constant tax cuts for the rich, do they even have to pay taxes anymore? Hell, I'd imagine they should be collecting tax payments from the government at this point.

2022-09-29 12:57:24 AM
The strange part is that the Tories came right out and said that they will pay for the tax cuts by borrowing money. The usual line is "cut taxes for the rich, and the magic Economic Growth Fairy will pay everybody's bills at absolutely no cost to you, the taxpayer." Perhaps they are planning to claim that borrowing money balances the budget.

Except if the rich spent anywhere near as much of their money as the poor did, we'd be a little better off because at least money would be moving. As it is, the rich "invest" in shiat like real estate that nobody else can afford or park it in the stock market.

Meanwhile, their stores and factories are understaffed, their workers are overworked and underpaid, and they have as few benefits as the rich can get away with, so the FAR larger, but poorer, classes have no money to spend.

This is what happens in unregulated capitalism. Wealth accumulates at the top, shiat breaks, the wealthy come crying for a bailout (despite still being incredibly rich), the poor get a few table scraps instead of the crumbs they're usually given, and the cycle begins again.

There's a reason the New Deal was so impactful and popular; before that, that basic cycle had repeated several times over before capitalist greed caused the economy to REALLY shiat itself in the 20s and 30s.

Remember to click your ruby heels together when you wish for that...

Republicans like Mitt Romney are trying to lump this legislation in with last year's American Rescue Plan, which they claim caused inflation to spike. Never mind whether this claim is true. The key thing is to do the math. The Inflation Reduction Act calls for spending less than $500 billion over a decade, compared with the American Rescue Plan's $1.9 trillion in a single year - and will actually reduce the deficit. That's why independent analysts find that it will have little effect on inflation.

When I was a kid I read a series of fantasy books that I loved. It was the Dragonlance series of D&D books.

Now it has been a long time ago since I read them so of someone geekier than I wants to correct me, I am OK with that but this is how I remember it.

Raistlin was the most powerful wizard on Krynn, but no matter how much power he attained, he always wanted more. He rose to the point of being able to challenge The Queen of Darkness, the ultimate evil in the universe. He got a vision that showed him that he could win, but in doing so he would destroy all that existed in that universe and would essentially be a god of nothing. For eternity.

He choose not to.

The .001% capitalists can "win" with more and more tax cuts for the wealthy but eventually the entire system will collapse and they will be the lords of nothing.

You're forgetting austerity for the rest.

This is where she farked up.

If she would've just started the austerity measures Britain is known for at the same time, everything would've worked out great!

Tax cuts for the rich as they hoard more wealth and less for everyone else.

Stiff upper lip old chap.

It's the conservative way.

It depends on the reason for the inflation.

It is the go-to, crowd pleasing, political slogan that everyone assumes will work because... hey... nobody listens to economists anymore anyway. When you want to pander to the lowest common denominator, dust off tax cuts and watch those votes roll in.

This is policy by politics, and it has been the name of the game for a long time.

The last time a Tory PM managed to destroy the GBP's international standing so thoroughly was Thatcher in the 80's, and that was after years of dedicated effort.  Truss has only been in the job a couple of weeks, and is already promising to make things worse.

I worked for Khazi (intentional) at BEIS and there was no hint that he was so dumb.  None at all.  F*cking Tory idiots.

Still, out of all of them that I loathe for the foul little c*nts that they are and represent, the honourable gentleman from the 19th century is the worst.  He should be run over by a slow, dyspeptic steamroller that has just finished rolling a field of curry-fed dogs' excrement.

At that point they will retire to their private ranches, mountain retreats and in the Musk Rat's case Mars with their private armies leaving the rest of us to starve. About ten days later the private armies will kill and eat their erstwhile employers. But for a shining moment the rich  will have Won Everything.
