"It was a private conversation."

Steil-Antoni responded by reminding him of an earlier remark in which he'd praised a woman for "playing like a man".
"Yeah, it's true," Smirin said.
"She's playing in style - positional style. A very strong endgame."

I wonder how the women chess professionals feel that even in a story about them they still went with a TV show image for the story. I bet that's infuriating.

Yep.  Pretty lame.

My sister won 1st prize in our school chess club.

The results were odd because the ranking was the reverse of skill level due to bizarre mismatch of who was playing who and people being out with the flu.  The guy who ranked worse than me would beat me 2 out of 3 games and one kid wasn't allowed to play because he was chess master in 6th grade and latter became a grandmaster.

Judit Polgar's rating was over 2700, she was not only a GM but a super GM, and during her career she beat some of the world's best including Kasparov, Carlsen, and Anand. And by best I mean beat some of the best of all time.

The main reason chess is dominated by men is because of the participation rate. Women simply do not participate in the game in the same numbers as men.

And what is often not appreciated about her is that her father rather arbitrarily decided to make his daughters chess champions.  So she was essentially just some random.  Totally nurture over nature.

This is entirely anecdotal of course, but I made a point of telling my daughter that she's good at math even when I remember there were some times when she struggled early on. Don't get me wrong, she really was good at math, once she nailed down a particular topic she was good at applying the methodology. But I really think the reinforcement helped her self confidence in the subject, and now she's actually pretty awesome at math and taking advanced classes for her age. So yeah, I strongly believe in nurture over nature.

/It also helps that her fifth grade teacher was awesome, he regularly told her how great she was doing.
//This is a good reminder that I need to sit down with her and teach her everything I know about chess :)

There's nothing wrong with taking an intentional approach to child raising.

Didn't say there was.  All three daughters insist he was a good father, and the one who got bored with chess early was allowed to stop.

Polgar was too good a person for the tourney world.   Her run in with Kasparov was legendary and he really came away looking like the horse's ass from it.   Then she beat Karpov, Anand, and a half-dozen other champions in the process.   She took a particular delight in beating the Russian GMs when they were top dogs in the chess world and very vocal about a woman's "place in the world".

The board was set up wrong. The square on the right side of the back row of both players should be white, not black. The Queen and King starting positions are also reversed.

For every genius that paddled against the current and ignored the naysayers to climb to the top, seems like there are a dozen who got discouraged and quit.

It could be like that with women in chess. If we encouraged girls more, we might see a lot of women in the top 100, if the idiotic naysayers were quiet.

Judit Polgar proved it's possible.

Women's bodies are clearly different from men's, so there will always be a need for women-only teams in physical sports, but women's brains are just as clearly equal to men's in intellectual pursuits, so there may not always be a need for special tournaments and titles for women in chess.

More women play chess -- and are innately good at it -- than most people realize. They just don't do it competitively as often as men because they have better things to do.

May also have something to do with the Titanic-sized boatload of attitude they tend to get when they do play competitively.  Desecrating the halls of serious man business and all

Actually not joking, there were some popular online chess boards pretty recently where someone realized that the black pawns were noticeably 'bigger' than the white pawns. LOL. Can't make this sh*t up.

The highest form of discourse is always sticking to orthodoxy. If challenged, or a hint of a challenge, the greatest among fling out personal insults.
