Just checked. She did have sponsors, and would get booked for speaking events.

I'm sure at her level there was some money to be made.
I guess if that was her career, then it makes a little more sense.
Still, it sucks for her kids to have to go through the trauma of losing a parent.

It's not up to you or me to make their decisions for them.  It's a miracle that Travis Pastrana is still (mostly) in one piece after all the stuff he's done.  Jumping from a plane with no parachute?  Driving a top fuel dragster with ZERO drag racing experience?  Double backflips on a dirt bike?  That is just the tip of the iceberg.

To be fair, the fact that the people who are the best at what they do didn't die doing it doesn't change the fact that most climbers are not the best. I don't give a shiat if climbers die climbing. I used to BASE jump. Climb away. Just don't be asking anyone else to risk their lives to save you when/if you fark up.

In the case of truly top flight high altitude mountaineers (and Hilaree certainly qualified) they understand the risks, and in the vast majority of their cases the people who would be performing their rescues are mostly from that same group - they self-support (for the most part) in that community specifically to try to mitigate the risk to others.

This reminds me of a mountaineer who lived locally, who was killed in the big Everest disaster in the late 90s.  His climbing partner and best friend visited the widow after the accident to offer his sympathy.  They got married later.  As far as I know, this husband is still alive.

/I would have heard. He is also a world-class mountaineer.

You're almost certainly thinking of Alex Lowe, who died in an avalanche on Shishapangma in 1999. His best friend and climbing partner, Conrad Anker (who survived that same avalanche) is now married to Alex's widow, Jenni Lowe-Anker. Conrad is still alive, though he did nearly die of a heart attack at altitude trying to summit Luang Ri.

I don't get it.  I mean I do get it, but it's still dumb. They both became adventurers like this because they were escaping from their pasts that included death from doing risky things.  (you can say that flying your own plane isn't risky, but it's a lot riskier than NOT flying your own plane, isn't it?)
Then the both of them hook up and decide to keep courting death for a living.  It sounds like kind of an extreme way of working out your demons, and true to what she was playing with all the time, she got her wish.  Her conscience is clear now--whoops, what about all the people you left behind who will cry for years now?

She thought she'd hate it, but she likes that she can model achievement to young girls, women and moms.

That's not achievement. That's escaping. Granted, she was very good at what she did. So are lots of other athletes who live normal lives.  Also that's selling your escapist lifestyle to sponsors so that you can keep doing it.  I wonder how many sponsors she had?
I bet her story would have sounded a lot different if they hadn't found sponsors for it.   Like they wouldn't have been able to indulge in their extreme passions, and just stayed normal people who did some exciting trips, instead of advertising the fark out of mountain climbing.  And Mount Everest wouldn't look like this
