Under 18, innit?

I personally think there should be a maximum voting age.  Old people (let's say above 80) don't have enough skin in the game.

If you're old enough to be trusted with military hardware in order to be sent off to potentially die for your country, you're old enough to vote and drink.

Preferably not all at the same time, though.

If you're being sent off to your potential death in a hail of gunfire then yes you should br able to vote. So in the US that's anyone school aged.

Oh look, it's the thing I've been saying.

Why not make the voting age the same as the age of consent? Of course, that may be problematic if the state's AoC is 12.

I have no issue with 16 year olds voting.

As to where the cutoff should be, I dunno. At this point I would lower it to 16 and see what happens before considering lower. But I could potentially listen to arguments for 15 or 14 at this point.

I'm pretty sure she's older than that.

If you're old enough to get a job that pays taxes, then you're old enough to decide what those taxes get spent on.

Social security, Medicare....yep, no skin in the game.

I'm okay with 16-year-olds voting, but I think that then raises the questions of what other rights and responsibilities should fall on them. I personally find it weird that one can vote at 18, but not drink. It would also be weird if you can vote but not consent to sex, buy cigarettes, gamble or buy lottery tickets, go to any movie you want, etc.

Voting is a right and responsibility of adult citizens/residents, if you're acknowledging someone as capable of making an informed decision about the future of their country but not their own life, that's just a bit, well, weird.

In all honesty if you lower the voting age to 14, no matter how vigorously you engage those voters, its unlikely more than 5-10% of them would vote anyway, and the ones who do would almost certainly be dragged to the polls by their parents and forced to vote for the candidate their parent wants.

Old people have a lot of skin in the game.

In fact, too much. Their bodies are trying to shed it, but it just won't drip off.

I think dementia should be a factor in being allowed to vote or not, more than skin tautness.

One of my best friends is in her 70's, and she's still sharp as a tack. And she would tell you to eat shiat.

I have no issue with people being dragged to the polls to vote. I fully support mandatory voting, like Australia.

And with my knowledge of teenagers, I would wager that more end up voting against what their parents try to force them to do once they are out of sight.

Whatever it is, it should be the same across the board.

Consent, voting, drinking, contracting, draft, jail. One age.

Because as it is right now, a 19-year old man is too young to drink, but old enough to go to adult prison if he gives his 16-year old girlfriend a beer; meanwhile, she can consent to sex but only till he turns 20, after that he's on the hook for rape (depending on the state).

Either 18 is adult or it isn't.  And if it is, then it's the age for all of it. You can drink, drive, fark, vote, and go to jail at 18; before that you're still a kid.  Or 21, or hell, 30.

But no more of this "well, they look 16 so that's close enough" bullshiat.

I get why they did it but it's complete bullshiat that you can't drink until you're 21 in a nation that can force you to fight for it at 18.

If a country wants to send you to war, you need the full rights of everyone else.

Likewise, if you want to send other people to war, you should be in the pool of candidates to go 'over there.'

Worth also considering that many places won't even rent you an apartment or just something for the night if you're under 21. We got that shiat all kinds of busted. Hell of a country that puts people in "yeah, kick 'em out if you want" territory three years before they can secure a place to live.

We had damn near a decade where it was specifically forbidden, in the same document that gives us so many rights.

But that's a dumb metric. If we're gonna be fair, everyone should be fair game for a draft that needs to happen before any declaration of war.

We'd get into less misadventures.

Nah, it's not relevant, people can have issues with memory--hell, I blank on names all the time--and still be cogent, and more importantly, voting is a farking right. Even a civics test is too easy to twist to disenfranchise only certain people.

I'd never advocate for that in anything other than jest.  I do think all of us wish the average American paid a little more attention (and some of us probably should pay a little less attention) and had a better grasp of complex issues.

We need to treat them the same way, instead of sniffing our own farts and pretending the other side finds the aroma pleasant.

No amount of demanding to be seen as the adult in the room is gonna make them act like more than a child. They're adults too.

Past a certain age, you need your ass beat for certain things.
