I hate being famous

Then you should've been a plumber, not a TV personality.  I'll bet you didn't have a problem cashing the paycheck, did you?

No matter what industry he would have ended up in he would have been a crank

You rarely get accidently famous, and to be his level of fame, you have to work at it.   He could have been a newspaper food critic or a literally anything else in the world.  He had what?  3 TV shows at the same time?  That's not someone who is avoiding fame.

She's total trash. She's on a Polanski situation -- she can't come to the US or she'll be prosecuted for farking a 17 year old.

It's possible to grow to hate something you once loved. Happens all the time.

Or could it be that he didn't actually believe hate that stuff and what we're seeing is someone severely depressed at their lowest point? Mental illness is awful

Just as there are many actors or musicians who enjoy the work and dislike the fame, someone can enjoy doing the work of creating and hosting shows without enjoying the affects of fame.

Plus, you know, his crippling depression is maybe, just maybe, a factor in how he felt.

This is the correct answer. He's lashing out in pain, not doing some kind of clinical catalogue of the things he dislikes.

Yep, if I ever end it, the note is now going to be Anthony Bourdain was right!!

"I am okay," Bourdain texted Argento after seeing the photo. "I am not spiteful. I am not jealous that you have been with another man. I do not own you. You are free. As I said. As I promised. As I truly meant. But you were careless. You were reckless with my heart. My life."

So he was just another incel. That's a bummer.

I'd say its the curse of anyone getting uber famous. What's the point of having millions and millions of dollars if you feel like a prisoner, stuck in the hotel because you'll get mobbed wherever you go.  How do you know X person isn't trying to take advantage of you because of who you are.

Couple those things with anxiety & depression and past drug use, you really have a recipe for mental breakdowns.

If you had a dad who always roped you into working out scenes from his new movie around the house...

"Ok, I'm gonna throw you into the berry bushes, and you try to get out, but pretend it's barbed wire and you're going to die... I'll stand back here and see which angle shot would be best for the scene."

So we have somebody who was in the midst of crippling depression and was upset that his ex-wife was photographed at a hotel that they had considered special when they were together with her new partner.

Summarizing that as "just another incel" is certainly something.

He's dead. You're not even theoretically talking to him.

It's pretty edgelordy to criticize someone's angst, who believed his words enough to kill himself.

FTFA: In his final exchange with Argento, Bourdain wrote, "Is there anything I can do?," to which the actor replied, "Stop busting my balls." The celebrity food writer responded with a simple, "OK," and hanged himself later that day.

It wasn't a truly bad thing which was said back to him but man, even that would undoubtedly haunt me if I'd said something of that nature and then what happened took place soon afterwards.

I think one of the best examples is Harrison Ford. He got into acting by accident, he loves doing the work of filming, he HATES selling the product and in his head Harrison is not the product, the film is.

His fans? Vastly disagree.

Bourdain suffered from deep periods of depression for years, probably his entire adult life. It was remarkable that he managed to cling to life for as long as he did. It's not unusual for somebody in the midst of a severe bout to say that they hate everything and everybody, especially themselves.

He also regarded his fame as having come entirely by chance, and as faintly ridiculous, which is an attitude that frankly would better suit a lot of celebrities. But he acknowledged that it allowed him to travel, try new foods, and popularize non-chic cuisines and eateries, which gave him some satisfaction; and mock chic ones, which gave him even more. He was not about the money.

I don't know whether any of the edgelords higher up in the thread would like to revise their positions in light of this, but I doubt it. Too busy being edgy to be human beings.

I never met him, but I know people who knew him reasonably well.  He was genuinely happy when he was married, I've been told, and went off the rails after. They were still shocked when he killed himself, but not AS shocked as they would have been if he'd done it years earlier.  He genuinely DID hate fame, while largely enjoying the actual work.  That part, what you see in the actual episodes, was real.

Nope. I have a copy of Confidential and I liked his shows. I'm not deluding myself though and no amount of "Look guys, he was mentally ill and that woman really hurt him!" is about to change that.

He was a drug addict and a depressive before he was famous. His marriage may have been a happy interregnum, but for somebody with depression even something like that isn't going to keep them "on the rails" all the time. Depression isn't about external circumstances; it's something inside you. It's the cancer of the soul.
