The year is 3024. Mankind has been overrun by mutant lizards. The cities are in tatters.

..And it still only cost them $.04/unit for the soda, and <$.20/unit for the hot dog and bun.

Loss leaders, how do they work?

Loss Leader.

/Same reason why their $5 roast chickens are on the opposite ass-end of the store

I'm sad they got rid of the Polish Sausages. Also, the pandemic seems to have caused Costco to get rid of the free raw onions. So these days, I just don't get the hot dog there anymore.

Yeah, went to Costco for the first time in years a few days ago and was pretty disappointed. No Polish, just a bland beef hot dog, the buns seem smaller and wimpier, and there's no onions or sauerkraut.

Still a pretty solid amount of food for the price, but not the draw it used to be. Not that I ever went there just for the hot dog, but it was a bonus on the way out.

The onions might be victims to all those recalls

I've been to costco a million times but I've never had a hot dog there.

I miss the deli mustard and onions, they went away when pandemic started and who knows when/if they will be back.

Me neither. I did buy the pack of polish from the reefer once though and came to the conclusion that while I could easily eat one, maybe even two with fixings, I really didn't want them all the time. So I put them in the freezer to grab when the urge hit, but even then I felt like I was forcing myself to eat them at the end.

The once a month, +/-, Costco visit was exactly the right frequency I required to enjoy the polish dog for peak satisfaction. Now I just get in and get out as best I can.

You're in the Seattle area so maybe this is news you can use - there is this silly little place at Alderwood Mall called Seoul Dog. It's worth at least a visit or two to fix a hotdog itch. (They're on the corner across from Red Robin, not inside the mall or food court)

I joined COSTCO this year and have been several times but have never checked out the food. Should I see a doctor?

- The only thing the hotdogs have going for them is that they contain less sawdust and more actually named mammal parts than other hotdogs in the same pricing tier. They are the most acceptable dirt cheap hot dogs, but they are far from the best hot dogs overall.
- Costco's food court is the 15th largest pizza chain in the US
- The frozen foods all fall in the "acceptable" category. Everything ranges somewhere between "great" and "whatever", but nothing really falls in the bad category. Most of it is their store branded version of name brand products anyway.

It is the distant future.

You're really not missing out on the dogs. Used to hit one up with coworkers near a jobsite.

Everyone else tells me it's the bulk deals to go. But for some reason I had coworkers obsessed with the food court.

Of course this was blue collar workers in Montana. So what's considered great is....well you get the idea

AFAIK you don't need to be a member to go to the food court in COSTCO and a lot of people go there just for lunch because it's super cheap and supposedly good. Like I said upthread, I've never eaten there but if you can get a dog and drink for $1.50, that's a pretty cheap lunch.

As disappointed as I was when Costco dropped the Polish dog (and sauerkraut), it was nothing compared to how I felt when I discovered Canadian Costcos that had poutine!

If you ask for the curds on the side, you'll get a second chip tray full of curds - far more cheese than you get just ordering regular poutine.
