I work for a government contractor so if the government shuts down I might get laid off without pay, so I'm not getting a kick out of this story....although I would like to kick Coalfinger, and his buddy Kristen Sinema while I'm at it.

I really wish this wasn't the first thing in the thread (will that get filtered? We'll see), because while I still think they've overplayed their hand with "ooga booga, gov'mint shutdown!", now I feel bad about saying it. I understand that it hurts people, and I really don't want it to happen, but I don't fear it. This is what? The fourth, fifth in the last decade? And the country as a whole just trucks through it. He wants me to think he's holding a gun to my head, but he's shown it's a piss balloon.

No, if you're a contractor, you're good. Even if the government shuts down, corporations get paid. See, if they didn't pay whatever company you work for, they could also not pay Boeing and Raytheon. That ain't gonna happen.

Trust me- I've been a contractor since all this crap started. 2013 was amazing- all the GS folks stayed home, so we had the office to ourselves.

That's not a government problem.  That's a problem with your company.

I'm glad you support people being forced to work without getting paid for an indefinite period.  Because that's what a shut down actually is.

Employees continue to work and don't get paid until funding is approved

Donors. If Dems are able to give those industries money, they don't need the GOP in power to do it

Because failing it ensures that the government will shut down with the Dems nominally in charge on the brink of a mid-term election.

Some needs to ask Ted Cruz about how much of the billions of dollars that cost he's paid back so far.

2022-09-27 11:14:16 AM
For better or worse, in two months time we're unlikely to ever need to pay this dispshiat the attention he so desperately craves. The theta decay on his power hold is about to expire, so he better milk it for what it's worth while he can, because after this he goes back to being another background Congresscritter that doesn't pull headlines.

Why the hell doesn't some billionaire Lib just step up and outbid the bribes that Manchin and Sinoma require?  Seriously - if this is how the game is played these days, why doesn't Soros or Gates just contact these DINOs and offer them blood money to do the right thing?

It's obvious that Republicans are wholly-owned subsidiaries of certain cartels - so why the hell aren't billionaire Libs playing the same game?!?

I guess I must be stupid, because it seems obvious to me.

I see that nobody has yet introduced a bill cutting off Congressional salaries & expense accounts until and unless a budget is passed.

That'd make sure this never happens again, even for a split second.

Unfortunately, most of the country aren't made up of far left moonbats. The vast majority of Democrats are moderates who know and understand that part of getting back to normal is having a government shutdown every now and again. Guess you should have voted harder.

> But Republicans are warning they will vote against the effort to tie permitting reform to the funding extension because they don't want to reward Manchin over his support for the Inflation Reduction Act.

Feels like maybe rather than blaming the Democrat who got a key bill passed, maybe it would make more sense to blame the GOP members who are voting against the permitting reform measure, not on any ideological grounds, but because they are mad that Manchin got a bill passed.

> At the same time, some liberal members of the Senate Democratic caucus have expressed concern over environmental impacts. Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is urging colleagues to oppose what he describes as a "big oil side deal."

Also, despite Sander's grandstanding, the permit reform bill is good, and necessary to achieve the emissions reductions goals in the Inflation Reduction Act.

For the Inflation Reduction Act to work, the US needs permitting reform | The Hill

But even if that weren't true, and the bill was solely a payout to the oil industry, it would still be good, because we are currently draining our strategic oil reserve in an effort to keep Russia's energy blackmail attempts from cutting support for Ukraine, and we should be propping up every energy price reduction option we have right now.

I for one am happy to give Joe Manchin whatever he needs to keep getting elected as a democrat in west virginia?

It's pragmatic.   When you have a 50/50 senate, if Manchin or Enema go away, the replacement results in loss of the senate.

It sucks for the GS people living paycheck to paycheck (vast majority of Americans) as they don't get paid until the funding comes through, but I don't think there has ever been a shutdown where the workers weren't paid in arrears.  It's purely theatrical and yes it definitely puts people in a pinch, but at the end of it all, it's a paid vacation

Great...show me the out of a 1000 possible senates that could happen without a manchin or sinema, what percentage of them are blue in the next 2, 4  and 6 years.

My guess it the *best* outcome is a red senate in the next 2 and 4, with some likelihood of an increased blue 6 years out. But that is likely anyway.

And if one thing we should have learned, control of the senate today matters.  RE:  3 supreme court justices with trump dildos shoved up their keisters.

Fair enough.

However, I know enough rich people to understand that you don't get that way by not caring when someone takes so much as a thin dime out of your pocket, either.  They could care less about their paltry salaries... but they don't.  They care about everything they think they're owed, or they wouldn't be the corrupt, vile, monsters we're having an issue with all the damned time.

Correct.  Our Federal Government is a drain on our society and I believe that if one were keeping score they would find that it has done way more harm than good.  Our current Federal Government is too expensive and wasteful.  What our union of States need is something significantly scaled down.
