The only people who don't seem angsty about the spread of fascism are the same ones who have been spreading Putin's talking points the last few years.

Surely a coincidence.

You would think that places like Italy and Germany would both be particular wary of any sort of far Right people in politics.  And I'm not talking about just the established politicians.  I'm talking about all the regular people that live there.

Have people forgotten about WWII?  Have they forgotten what happens when fascism takes over?  Have the forgotten about Mussolini and Hitler?  Have they forgotten what those monsters did to not just their countries but to the whole world?

I'm am utterly confused as to how history has gotten to the point today where people have actually settled back on that old ideology while seemingly forgetting how badly that went the last time.  Forgetting what those monsters did to other people in their effort to cleanse the world of "undesirables".

And it's not just in Europe.  The Middle East has got their own problems with far-right loonies.  And that has been running amok for ages.

What this says to me is that humans, in general, are not good, kind, progressive thinking people.  Humans are cruel, selfish, narrow minded, stupid, and above all xenophobic.

It is becoming more clear to me now how so many civilizations have risen and fallen over the past few 1000 years.  Because the underlying human nature destroys everything at some point.  And it looks like we are once again getting to that point.

Humans are slowly suffocating themselves with plastic bags over their heads, ie: climate change.  At least with fascism there's a chance of nuclear annihilation.  Deaths coming, just a mater of how fast at this point

why don't we wait and see what happens?  Seems like the Italians have been governing them selves in one form or another for quite a few years, through many ups and downs, recently a new lead every couple of years.

I'd say if she starts to remodel the coliseum for reuse, that could be a sign we'd want to pay attention to,
I'd join the effort for more children my self!

I don't think Steve Bannon's role in the rise of alt-right populism in Europe is talked about nearly enough. He has been extremely active since he left the white house and he goes over there and gives speeches, meets with politicians, strategizes on campaigns. He's the darling of Hungry, helped Meloni's campaign in Italy, and is focused on what he calls making a "supergroup" of alt-right nations in Europe. We seem to just treat him like a drunken, bloated, doofus, but he is doing real damage in the world.

The last 100 years of Italian politics seems to have a constant narrative of a directionless society trying to recapture some imaginary lost glory.  Fascism is perfect for that because it purports to right the wrongs of the past.  Unfortunately, the way fascism does this is by brutalizing some out groups and it only makes the economy worse.

Why be surprised when American fascists celebrate another nation electing fascists to their government?

It just proves that these assholes can't wait to turn us into an extreme right-wing nation under an iron fist.

Humans have an amazing capacity to rationalize.  "THIS time, it'll be different"

Palingenetic ultranationalism is a hell of an attractive concept to people who view the past with rose-colored glasses glued firmly to their faces.  And are fearful of change.  They just tell themselves over and over again - "back then, 'we' were in charge and it was great.  Then 'they' took over and now it all sucks.  When 'we' take things back over, it will bring in a national rebirth and create that golden age again".

That's fascism in a nutshell.  Always attractive to a certain mindset, always wrong in retrospect.  But again, they'll tell themselves "this time it'll be different".

Narrator: "It's never different."

I think after trying our every other party and seeing the governments collapse, Italians are mostly looking for a government that won't, instead of huge reforms to their rail system.

I would not bet on this conservative coalition having more staying power than previous guys. They do have an edge because Italy did some electoral reforms recently and shrank the size of the legislature.

This right wing government is the first gov to be formed under the new rules. Maybe it will be less of a shiat show than usual for Italian government due to the reforms and the conservatives can claim it is because of their win rather than the reforms themselves. I still think it is a long shot.

He's one of the truly scary ones.  In some ways he's just another low rent grifter but he keeps finding wealthy benefactors who keep him afloat and provide a platform.  It wouldn't surprise me at all if he did actually help move the needle in Italy.

Fortunately he gets removed from his public life at the end of next month.  Not for a long enough period of time but there's an even more serious criminal complaint that follows the contempt sentence.

I think you might have the cart before the horse on that one.  Places like Hungary informed and helped form what we're dealing with here in the U.S.  Guys like Orban have been running Hungary since the late 90s.  Berlusconi has been in the limelight of Italy just as long, and was the example that demonstrated to many that DJT could win here.

Bannon went to Europe to sharpen his sword.  I'm sure he assisted in the events there recently, but he's gaining their experience to apply here as a primary focus.  They like him there, but he's a bit player at best.
