I looked for data on whether this is more or less virulent, but it's too early to say for sure. This at least suggests that it's not dangerous, since we would have seen that by now.

From another article from August: So far, India isn't seeing a significant rise in hospitalizations from its 'Centaurus' (BA.2.75 ) wave, says Jameel, who gives credit to the combined effects of high rates of vaccination and of previous infection.

So, I'm not going to panic yet. It's possibly more transmissible but probably no more dangerous, which is exactly what we expect in the evolution of viral pathogens. We're at the stage where we just have to live with this shiat.

So BA4/BA5 are "down" to 83%, but down from what? If these new variants are 1% and 3% or so, then that's a lot of infections that aren't any of the above. Maybe they're still original omicron?

Please infer anything from this. I didn't have my glasses on and read that as "...the Jews music." I immediately thought of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah chair dance. Then I clicked the link and was really confused.

B...b...but, Joe Biden said the pandemic is over.

I guess now we're just supposed to live with the current level of getting COVID 4-6 times a year.

My understanding was that before COVID some seasonal colds were attributed to other coronaviruses.  On the off chance COVID vaccines and boosters help protect against some of the common colds each season, I am for it, and would be even if it were ineffective against COVID, which it isn't.

Got my bivalent booster yesterday.

I feel OK but my arm is much more sore than When got the other shots.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Yes.

So did they just give up on the Greek alphabet and just start calling all the new variants subsets of Omicron? We still have a ways to go to reach Omega. You want to think it's all over but it ain't

This non-scientific statement is proof of nothing, but a whole lot of people around me are getting it this month. All good outcomes so far, however, because we're largely vaxed to the teeth.

As if breakthrough cases aren't a thing.

And as if most of the mutations didn't start elsewhere first. BA.5 was already peaking in Africa and England before it started taking over in America.

But, let's ignore that because preventing variants from coming to America would have required executive orders and we all have seen Joe Biden doing only the barest of minimums well after that bare minimum would have been truly effective.

And, yes, everybody should get vaccinated and boosted.

What is happening here is the same thing that happened with influenza, we see more and more less lethal variants over time.
So the pandemic is basically over and we'll see more infections and fewer deaths. If you get the vaccine, it's no worse than a bad cold when you're infected. We'll probably need boosters periodically, like flu shots.

No need for a panic or more lockdowns unless new data suggest it's more lethal.

I might agree, I may just be misremembering my previous experience.  I also think the band aid they put on was too tight or something, it hurts less now that I took it off.

In any case, go get your boosters everyone.

So does the bivalent booster protect against these new strains? That would've been helpful to have in the article and I didn't see it mentioned.

The only weekly service I have at the house is trash pickup, so I'm trying to see if those guys can get certified to give me a booster shot every time they pick up the garbage. My insurance hasn't signed off yet.

From what I've gathered on the Google, they don't know exact details yet, but it looks like the bivalent booster provides at least some protection.

There is no data yet, but it seems likely that any booster offers protection from severe disease even if rate of infection is still high.

This is based on the effect of the original booster on the earlier variants.
The way I think of it is that it kind of puts the virus in a sandbox - the virus can infect and gain a foothold, but the initial immune response prevents it from doing a lot of damage, so that your body has time mount a new immune response directed to at the new strain.

This is old news. BQ is already surpassing everything else in several countries and it's got all the fun delta-convergent mutations. There's even a CA designation now but I haven't seen too much on it. TFA would have been relevant a month ago. Funny how we have instant news for everything the very moment it happens, except when it comes to the pandemic.

Good luck with your bivalents. The boosters might prevent a lot of carnage this winter but a lot of people who assume they won't get sick will probably be in for a surprise. Now would be a great time for the FDA to authorize Novavax for those who had mRNA.

I finally got it a couple weeks ago. I slept for about a day, then felt like I had a sinus thing for a few days.

I'd gotten my booster a few months prior.
