QUICK!  Grab the doggy shampoo and give ol' Rover a bath where he won't fight back!

Joxertheflighty: ruetheday69: Joxertheflighty: ruetheday69: [Fark user image image 850x1133]Been fostering this guy (brown dog) for about a month now. Longer than I normally foster, but with shelter being stuffed full right now and dogs being held in pop up cages, I feel bad taking him back. He needs some work before he finds a forever home anyway.

He is about 18 months old. He isn't very well leash trained. He loves my dogs and loves to play but bites uncomfortably hard and can get a bit out of control during play. He does not attack or otherwise harass dogs, just during play time. Nips when getting hand fed. Chases the cats a little but is backing down when they make it clear they don't like that. He is also uncomfortably skinny and wants to eat constantly. Trying to at least ameliorate some of these issues before handing him back for the "Clear The Shelter" event we have having in October.

Any tips for any issues I'm having would be appreciated!

A few things, and apologies if you already know/do/tried these things:
For the treat thing, Juneau had issues (and still has issues) with hand feeding.  My sister was taught by a trainer to hold the treat in a closed fist until the dog sort of starts ignoring it. When she starts ignoring it, then give the treat.  It takes patience - Juneau would take many minutes at first to stop trying to pry my sister's fist open.  Then, after the dog gets used to the fist, when you offer the treat, if he lunges for it or nips for it, take it away and offer it again once he has settled.  Otherwise, it is helpful to offer a treat on an open palm so he can just take it instead of grabbing parts of the hand too.  It's an ongoing and long-term training process.
If the play with the other dogs gets a little too rowdy, break it up immediately.  I find with my dog, who has anxiety issues around other dogs, standing with her hips between my legs and scratching her throat and face and shoulders helps keep her contained but also distracted enough to calm down. ...

They are such dogs. How did they become such dogs?

It was awful last night.   The wind was well, windy.   I am missing shingles....needs to be replaced anyway.  And I got maybe 4 hours of sleep.  And did I mention NO POWER.  I have already cleared out garage fridge and freezer.  I've been thru the fridge in the house.  Tossed stuff.  I'll wait for power before I look in the freezer.

Good to hear from you.
Glad that you're faring pretty well.  I've had a busy morning and havent checked the news, but looks like the Ft.Myers area got seriously smashed.
Hope you get power restored quickly.

Glad you're still with us.  Keep the freezers closed, the defrost will take longer, and even at fridge temps the perishables inside will last for a few days.

This!  Power outages were common at my property, the longest being 16 hours on the coldest day and night of the year 🥶. My wood stove kept the trailer plenty warm and I kept the fridge and freezer doors both shut until the power came back on and everything was fine, even with the trailer at 74°f (and the fridge/freezer was less than 30' at most from the wood stove).  According to the power company, freezer contents will stay frozen 48 hours if door is kept shut, fridge contents 8-10, again keeping door shut as much as possible.

/ Took a WEEK to unfreeze my pipes under the trailer since no power, no working heat tape 😡. I was incredibly lucky pipes didn't break.

funzyr: Here's Cole. He had diarrhea over the weekend. We think it's because the girl gave him some fries from McDonald's, so no more salted food for him. He's getting back to normal, now. Sorry you have to look at my dumb face, too.

[Fark user image 425x318]

Might be more the grease than the salt causing that issue...
though why not both.
But I've noticed with my puppers, greasy things can really mess up their digestive response in a very stinky way...
farts, sloppy poo, that sort of thing.
Anyway, hope it ceases to be an issue for the dude

Bandit runners* are usually the worst, but I'll make an exception for this one :-)

* runners who run on a closed race course without entering the race

I can't even get up the gumption to run away when some asshat is following me home at night attempting to roll me.  You mean to tell me there are people that run so much they invade foot races?!

It's always locals who are used to running on part of the course. But they become "bandits" when they use race resources, like water stops and porta-potties.

My DIL called to check the condition of the tomato field and was told they're still quite muddy from last night's rain. Walker + a muddy field is not a good fit, so DIL is going to pick me a variety of tomatoes, including heirlooms. Disappointed obviously, but it is what it is.

DIL went a little tomato crazy, so I shared some with a neighbor. The ones on the far right are heirloom.
