I was fortunate enough to see him perform in Vegas back in 2002.  And thanks to a friend's connections, we were in the first five rows, IIRC.

Good times indeed.

I still remember how he told some jokes about airport security...."Did you pack these bags yourself?"

That was 8 months before 9/11.

But George wasn't a caged bird, and singing wasn't quite as much fun as swearing - in 1967, George was fired for delivering an obscenity-laden monologue to that night's guests.

Immediately afterwards, George went on a long series of self-serving, tedious tirades in which he depicted himself as being the victim of 'cancel culture'.

Oh, wait. He wasn't an entitled piece of shiat. He didn't do that at all. He used it as a learning experience. He reinvented himself as a comedian and focused his attention on a new audience who understood and appreciated his empathy, his integrity and his fierce opposition to social injustice.

I saw him in the early 2000's and was surprised to bump into my 14 year old nephew before the show. He knew I like Carlin and asked my sister if he could go. So she bought him and her a ticket. Carlin put on an awesome show, but I never saw my sister or nephew the rest of the show. I found out later they left soon after the show started and I knew exactly why. Carlin always started his shows with an especially dirty joke, to set the tone for the evening. On this night, he opened with:

You know what you never hear people talking about any more? Pussy farts. Why is that?

That joke sent my sister to the parking lot dragging my nephew behind her.

Your sister needs to pull the stick out of her butt. When my wife and I started having kids, we decided we'd allow them to watch R-rated movies when they turned 14. One of the first R-rated movies I watched with my oldest son (right after he turned 14) was "Heavy Metal".

/Of course, I later discovered they had a friend (their age) who was really into Pornhub. Apparently, they'd been watching that since they were about 10.

I'd heard bits and pieces but really didn't get the full Carlin experience until College, my roommate had a nearly complete collection that blew my mind. I've played the more lighthearted and whimsical material (much of the first 3 albums) for my son. I think he preferred the Firesign Theater and Emo Phillips albums, a bit more zany and a lot more absurdist. Once he hits the teens though, we'll be delving a little deeper into the Carlin discography and I'm sure he'll be laughing quite hard then.

Some of his stuff hasn't aged well. Also he and his wife were druggy parents to their daughter.

Loved him growing up and had the recordings. HIis best stuff was just funny and silly stuff about language, not anything social or political which was pretty obvious stuff.

I'm glad he was not some sort of "anti-PC" or "anti-wokeness" type (mostly) as that stuff tends to not hold-up

LOL, do parents get their memories of being a kid surgically removed as part of the birthing procedure or something? "I know it didn't work on me or anyone I knew as a kid, but we're totally different! Our kids will hang on our every word and take 100% of our advice to heart!".

Not that simple. Carlin love for words and language basically trumped everything else with no exceptions, almost irrationally so. The fastest way to piss him off and to get him going was to tell him he couldn't say something. It didn't reflect on his politics in any way other than he really didn't like being told no when he wanted to use some particularly foul or otherwise loaded word or phrase.

If you're asking about me, I had no illusions that my kids would hang on every word, but knowing we disapprove of the behavior makes it less likely they'll engage in the behavior. Children generally model their parents behavior, especially in public. And if something bad happens while they're engaging in that behavior - if my sons' friend's mom had walked in on them watching porn, for instance - it's significantly less likely they'll do it again. The Guy Pearce version of "The Time Machine" gave my youngest son nightmares for a month and that's only rated PG-13. I'm pretty sure he didn't start watching violent movies again until he was 15.

...the guy literally said "soft language makes soft people." He went after white liberals as much as he went after white conservatives, especially in that what would be called today "woke language" (again, he called it "soft language").
