I doubt that the vegan diet itself makes a person depressed or prone to depression.

Rather, it is the the mental state of a person which makes them more likely to choose extreme dietary systems.

Veganism isn't a mental illness, but it may be indicative of a mental illness in some of its practitioners.

Eating salad is important. You want there to be plenty of nice fresh nest making material in your tummy just before the steak arrives and makes itself comfortable.

There was this one steakhouse I used to frequent where the salad was so big that if I ate it all I wouldn't have had room for the steak.

I had to make a hard choice.

Vegan diets lack so many bioavailable nutrients that it wouldn't surprise me if they caused mental illness.

Most vegetarians know to supplement their diet with none meat proteins. But yes, there are many who don't. The question is, does the study separate cause from effect.

It's not proteins, per se, that are missing from a vegan diet, but bioavailable micronutrients: heme iron, bioavailable O-3 fats (conversion from plant forms has not been well studied), vit. K2 (unless you're up for natto), retinol, and collagen (which most Americans, vegan or omnivores, are deficient in), occur to me immediately.  People shouldn't have to supplement their way to good nutrition, with the exception of magnesium, because soils worldwide are depleted.

Interesting study, but it's important to remember that correlation is not causation.  One of the things I've noticed about the vegetarians and vegans I know in real life is that a disproportionate number of them tend to be introverts.  So I looked it up, and yes there is a correlation.  Introverts are also more likely to deal with depression than extroverts.

I won't give up meat because I really like the taste of it and I don't particularly care about a cow's well being.  I don't know too many vegans, but I know a surprising number of vegetarians and they all seem pretty healthy.  But Beef, pork, chicken and turkey all taste amazing.

A lot of vegetarians(in America at least) are fat farks who eat overprocessed carby crap, overprocessed fake meat, and not many vegetables. Maybe some actual nutritional content into their diets might help perk them up a bit...

Apparently at a good restaurant in Maine my Aunt asked if the lobster roll was better with the bacon and everyone at the table got audibly upset that she asked the waiter that question between a bunch of other vacationing close family. I was told that story this week, and am always reminded that it is the candy of meats, the meat that other meats wear to be better.

I think you're on the right track.

From what I've noticed, yeah a lot of vegetarians tend to be introverts (not all).

But also I would say their intelligence (book smart) is slightly better or a little bit higher than most.

Studies have shown that people with a higher intelligence, tend to be more depressed.

Anyway that's, my idea.

But if any of that is true, then I say ignorance is bliss and I'd rather be a dumbass. Because there's no contest between spinach and a ribeye (cooked not beyond medium rare)

I totally agree about meat. My son, husband and I just went to an all you can eat restaurant at Disney. It had potatoes, corn on the cob, green beans, salad, cornbread, and three meet dishes. Brisket, chicken and pulled pork. It even included all you can eat dessert. I simply took little bits of everything. We are free to eat what ever we want, at least for now.

I'm team New York Strip.  I'm not a fan of gristle.  Yeah, I've noticed the intelligence thing too.  None of the smartest people I've met are vegetarians but the vegetarians I have met mostly seem to be above average intelligence.

This is probably like gay people and property values in the 90's.  It's not that gay people are actually likelier to be rich, it's that affluent gay people were more likely to be out of the closet.
