Of course, FB is not the father. Websites can't do that yet. Although they can **** you.

It's okay. Not GoT Season 1 level, but not Season 7 and 8 level drek, either.  The dragons, while technically more realistic, look worse fro some reason. And hey, Matt Smith playing an asshole.

Meh. It's alright. If you have some time and a TV it is worth throwing on. But I am not going out of my way for it.

It was also pretty jarring suddenly recasting most of the major characters.

Separately, I finally watched the first few episodes of Rings of Power and was curious to see opinions here so I looked for the discussion thread. I was quite surprised there was no Fark thread for it last week. Is there really that little interest in it?

I thought it was slightly more compelling than HotD even if it isn't very good.

Mods don't want it so it's not here.

It's the top show on Prime, and it's doing well. I like it quite a lot. I know some of the hardcore Tolkien-heads and the usual right-winger suspects are whining about there being black people and too many women on the show (black elves in particular seem to really piss them off, even though branches of elves were described as "dusky" by Tolkien in some works.)

As for HoD, I like it though it's a weird choice to be speeding through the decades like they are. Also: The Queen's a real biatch now and I don't know how much more of her c*nty eye-rolling and huffing I can deal with.

the expectation is that grrm knows how to make a story but its moving at a glacial pace with no likeable characters, no great performances, and the unlikeable bastards for the most part have little motivation to be unlikable bastards.

Its living on 80% potential here and that number is going down each week

I am someone who finds Tolkien's books too tedious of a slog to read through and Peter Jackson's films not much better by and I am enjoying Rings of Power enough HB to continue watching it.

For HotD, I understand why they just skipped a decade, because the important events were older and we needed children to have grown to continue the actual story. I kind of wish they had started where this episode was and did flashbacks, however.

Its not good.  It is a daytime soap opera with better special effects.   It is Wigs of Our Lives.   It is Days of our Dragons.

There are no other houses involved in any of it.  Targaryans everywhere you look.  And time jumps.  And a complete mid-season recast.   And lots of screaming pregnant women.

I'm gonna watch it, and then forget I watched it.

The Streaming market I think is diluting the acting and writing talent pool for better or worse. This series might hold up pretty well in the future when David Benioff will be forcing the homeless to perform Punch and Judy puppet shows at gunpoint for HBO Max.

As others have noted, it's alright. It's well made, with excellent production values. There are some intriguing things happening. However, it is slow going so far. They seem to be banking on the returning fan base from GoT, and have thus felt free to indulge themselves in massive exposition.* If the show ends up great (a real possibility, given the show's positive qualities), that might be seen as brilliant. If not, it will either need course correction or slowly bleed viewership until it is cancelled.

* As others have said, the exposition we've been given so far isn't necessarily all that complex, but it is taking up a lot of time. While I don't think it's bad, I am in the camp that thinks this first half of the season - the character introductions and history of Westeros - could probably have been handled in a more engaging way.

When it shows instead of telling it is riveting (opening 3rd baby birth) but is sucks when it settles in long winded tells instead of showing. Anything involving the  dragons flying is pure gravy for me.

So the plot starts moving forward at a decent pace, and they do a ten year time jump? For what should be a character driven story, they sure seem to treat character development as an afterthought.

She's a highly talented princess overlooked bc she's female bc that's what the fantasy tropes say she is. Not you know, anything we're going to actually show in the story.

IDK that we're meant to see her as "Highly talented." IDK that we're meant to see anyone in the show (or the original) as highly talented at leading a country. Several people have certain strengths, sure, but they also have significant weaknesses. Both shows are dedicated to the idea that what makes a good leader of large groups of people is ambiguous at best. Rhaenyra is certainly presented as one of the more sympathetic characters in the show, but that we are sympathetic for her doesn't mean she has been shown (or that we are meant to believe that she has) any particular talent for ruling.

On the topic of the time jump, I think there's something interesting. In the sort of punctuated equilibrium of the show. Things are one way up until something happens that creates a new status quo, and then they stay that way for awhile until some new event causes another change. While I have my own frustrations with the time jump, there is something moving to the way the relationship between Rhaenyra and Allisent has transformed. We are shown them as friends who count on one another, only to feel betrayed when each hides something from the other. Then, the pressure of their competing claims and the threat of violence that could erupt from those claims ultimately breaks that relationship. It makes the scene where Rhaenyra attempts to heal the wound more moving knowing what they've lost and that for 10 years they've been resentful of each other (at least until we realize that what she is proposing is marrying a nephew to his aunt, which makes his grandfather, her father, disturbingly gleeful).

I was behind two episodes because i cannot stop watching Better Call Saul. I caught up on the two episodes last night and really felt I had squandered time I could have spent watching BCS.
