Pretty sure this means we can legally drone strike him now.

If he gets captured by the Ukrainians how fast would they ship him over to the US with a bow attached?

Snowden, who has kept a low profile in Russia and occasionally criticized Russian government policies on social media, said in 2019 that he was willing to return to the U.S. if he's guaranteed a fair trial.

Well if that isn't the world's most bungled description of his personality. Putin's arm is paying rent in his ass.

In Russia, Bear have right to arm you!

What a country!

From the story:  Snowden, however, has never served in the Russian armed forces, so he is not eligible to be mobilized, his lawyer Kucherena told the Interfax news agency.

BS.

They could use the recently captured T-90M tank as a gift box.

I hope someday Snowden makes it back to the US, where he is tried and executed for espionage. Reality Winner went to prison for doing NOTHING like what he did.

If he were doing that he'd have gone to a non-extradition nation which *hasn't* been trying to annex territories as long as he's been trying to escape his punishment.

Oh, and it's very likely that he delivered documents to Russia. He deserves to die a traitor's death.

I know that logical consistency is considered heresy these days....but trump and Snowden both committed espionage against this country. If we are going to hold Trump accountable for his crimes then we have to hold Snowden accountable as well.

If that was the ONLY classified information that he grabbed then I would be much more sympathetic, but he grabbed as much as his weaselly guts could carry and caused untold amount of damaged and risked the lives of many people gambling on a cushy life in either China or Russia. He committed straight up treason, and used the domestic surveillance information as a post-hoc rationalization.

He screwed his own pooch, no propaganda needed. He could've easily spent the past 10 years (crap, really?) discussing security, freedom, and surveillance. Instead he threw himself to Russia and decided to become their personal puppet. He made a point to only disclose leaks that were harmful to Democrats or protect pro-Russia Republicans, despite having access to both.

Snowden is a hero who exposed some of the American government's against its' own people, committed in YOUR name, assuming you're American.  He doesn't deserve having to hide out in Russia.

Just like Assange doesn't deserve what he's getting -- he also exposed American crimes, this time war crimes.

Somebody's got to explain to me what the big deal is about this guy, because before he blew the whistle, I already kind of assumed the government spied on me in ways I couldn't even begin to imagine.

From where I'm standing, he seems to have ruined his life stating the obvious, and then sought asylum in that bastion of personal liberties...Russia.

Newsflash: There's a big-arse difference between whistleblowing and stealing classified data, sending it to foreign parties with no right to access it, and then fleeing to a non-extradition treaty country.

He chose poorly.

Regardless of one's opinion of his actions then, cosying up to a totalitarian hellhole and barely saying a peep against Putin and his invasion of Ukraine doesn't exactly look good on Snowden

Maybe he should have pulled an Assange and hid in an Ecuadorian embassy

You pretty much are there already. Whistleblowing the program is something he can legitimately do. If the gov tried to silence him, there's plenty of domestic media he could have leaked juicy bits to in order to bring pressure from the public.

and he could have done all of that without passing any data to foreign adversaries, or skipping town to an avowed hostile power.

He began with the idea of doing an arguably noble thing, then made every single worst decision possible. He did this to himself. Period.

Well, I guess all I can write to that is I already KNEW the US has a massive domestic surveillance operation. Have you ever actually read the end user license/agreement for anything you sign up for?

In all seriousness, any American who had an ounce of intelligence and a smidgen of education knew that the US had been spying on Americans since... well... forever. Especially starting post WW2 because it was revealed, countless times. Anyone who thought it went away, when surveillance became easier, is a moron.

For fark sake, and this is a true story not a joke, I was in my home (no Alexa) and started talking to my wife about buying a cabinet to fit a very specific dimension in the bottom of our kitchen pantry. But, I wanted it also to be on wheels, and to have the top with a 2 inch lip so I could put stuff on top, wheel it out and not have that stuff fall off. The next day, advertisements, ON FARK, from Amazon where showing me small cabinets, on wheels, with lips on the top.

We have about 10 freaking modern smartphone, Ipads, surfaces, laptops, xbox's, all throughout the house. I am not saying 100% these devices were listening in, she or I probably did a search for this that evening (but we both could not recall doing so). What I am saying though is that IF they did, I would not have been surprised for 1 second.

Look, Apple is literally advertising on national TV how their new product will tell you that you are ovulating. If there is one woman out there using a smartwatch that does not believe this information could be used in a civil or criminal action, or that it is not easily available to the NSA/DHS, they are a moron. Hell, I just heard a news report how the US park service is issuing violations against people who use geotags, on twitter, in parts of national parks that are restricted.

Snowden showed us nothing except that he was a person willing to sell out to the highest bidder.

More than that.

Edward Snowden: Leaks that exposed US spy programme - BBC News

The scandal broke in early June 2013 when the Guardian newspaper reported that the US National Security Agency (NSA) was collecting the telephone records of tens of millions of Americans.

The paper published the secret court order directing telecommunications company Verizon to hand over all its telephone data to the NSA on an "ongoing daily basis".

That report was followed by revelations in both the Washington Post and Guardian that the NSA tapped directly into the servers of nine internet firms, including Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, to track online communication in a surveillance programme known as Prism....

I get that Americans have the memory of goldfish, but how do you not know this?

The official line was that the feds only surveilled "bad guys" after securing the proper warrants from a judge. Then I think Snowden tried to blackmail the kings of blackmail into admitting their entire surveillance program, where they said "okay, you got us. But it's just basic metadata that we don't even really look at unless we have to." Then it got released that they spend tons of money to record and store every single text and phone call, which is a much bigger deal than people realize. Especially when we've had incidents of NSA guys stalking ex-girlfriends. Then Snowden threw away what little good will he farmed by being a Russian heel.
