Why is the FBI expected to give a statement?
"Sorry, we didn't catch the kid! Props to London's finest?"

Look at the bright side, we know GTA6 is coming.

Extradition to the US.
FBI investigates federal crimes, will possibly be bringing him back to US to face charges.

But in all seriousness... Stephanie Sterling said it the best: I do not envy the position that kid is in. Kid had no idea what Rockstar is going to do to him.

I think a rockstar makes you poop faster, and maybe gives you heart palpitations.  But other than that, it is mostly just a sugary drink.

The fruit punch is pretty good. I think the original tastes like metal.

This kid was pretty obvious though.

And probably farked, because since he was trying to blackmail Rockstar it's going to be difficult to try and go with it was just a prank that went too far.

Knew it had to be a kid because he was demanding a 5 digit payday from Rockstar, who will probably spend more money than that making an example.

I'm worried. Remember that Trevor torture mission in GTA V?

Oh, that kid is gonna get so farked by Take Two Interactive, that the FBI will look away and not investigate it further for two years.

The kid inconvenienced a multi-billion-dollar corporation, while Epstein did not. Plus the kid is not a billionaire in his own right, while Epstein was rich enough to own an island.

I guess that's the nature of my thought, though. I realize it may technically be a US crime if a server on US soil was involved. It almost feels like a level of corporate policing, like the old mercenaries  vs. banana farmers days.

Just as litigious as Nintendo. You just see Nintendo suing more people because they have more IPs to defend.

Quit trying to make his crimes seem trivial.

UPDATE: I've confirmed the 17-year-old arrested in Oxfordshire for the cyber attack on Rockstar and Uber is the same teenager that was arrested earlier this year for hacking Microsoft and Nvidia. The teen associates with a group called "Lapsus$." Additional arrests expected.

I'm not sure it will be so easy for Take Two to prove damages from this issue, and that's the crux of most civil penalties and restitution. Sure, wire fraud will find him in club fed, but I'm not so sure Take Two will have much room to prosecute based on screenshots being posted without malice.

The kid stated he had their source code for GTA5 and 6 and was posting the screenshots as proof he invaded their system and had legitimate material in order to extort money from them. With malice is a slam dunk here. The fact that the code may potentially be out there which would certainly be easy to prove how they could damage GTA Online, and the leaker also put out other details such as internal budget information.

It's going to be a walk in the park to show damage.

Not sure why you're thinking it's be just a civil trial though, Rockstar probably will skip that unless this kid has money making it worth the effort to even bother. Criminal charges are what they're going to be after, because this was high profile enough to make sure that an example is made so that the next person who thinks about 'posting screenshots without malice' thinks twice about it.

So what?  They charge him $5000, take all the ammo from his weapons, and put him back on the street 8 hours later.

Attempting blackmail is something with a whole mess of charges. It's built up so that whatever you're threatening to blackmail over, the criminal charges against you will be worse than any damage to reputation or withholding of evidence would result.

But threatening a developer to release early images? If they're good, you brag. If they're bad, you say it's fanart. Leaked images are rubber duckies.

You're right, I'm sorry.

I'm just jealous that he's going to have all electronics taken away until he's 18, then start hacking again under a pseudonym like "Crash Override" and then maybe fark 90s-era Angelina Jolie.

wildcardjack: But threatening a developer to release early images?

Source code =/= early images. Source code dump was what he was threatening, otherwise you may have had a point there.

Not to mention the intrusion itself is going to catch the kid charges. Which he can't even claim ignorance about since it wasn't even the first time.

As a bare minimum he's getting time for breaching the bail conditions from the first time he was caught.

He decided to double down? Not the smartest.

What's even the point of leaking GTA? We know what GTA is. It's a game where you become a criminal who steals cars. There's a plotline. There's radio stations that you'll end up obeying all traffic laws just to listen to.
