I was at the Rangers game this afternoon.  Left at the top of the eighth when it was obvious it wasn't happening for them.  But hey, free tix, parking pass, and free food!

As a Rangers fan since childhood, tip of the cap to Cleveland.  We would have found a way to fark it up anyway.  I mean, so will they, probably, but this definitely gives me the Major League nostalgic feels.  Good on you, and good luck surprising us all.

The White Sox's hiring of LaRussa has really paid dividends... for Cleveland. Hard to believe they wasted all that talent and now they have a young Guardians team ready to take charge in the division.

/congrats, Guardians

Wouldn't that be something if they won the World Series this year?

If they did, we could say they broke the curse of Chief Wahoo.

8th time the youngest team in mlb has won their division, all the other 7 have gone to the world series and 2 have won it

well their path as the (all but set) 3rd seed means they will host whomever is the 6th seed (the three wild card slots are between the Jays, Rays and Mariners, with a (very) outside chance of Orioles) for a best of three (all three games would be in Cleveland), and if they win that, a best of 5 with the Yankees. After that, likely the Astros, then whomever comes out of the NL, which, honestly.. all the potential NL playoff teams look scary

they have a 4 game lead on the Orioles for the last spot, but if any team can do it, its the Mariners

When did MLB make their playoffs like NCAA men's basketball? I feel like that's more recent than 2016.

The Smails Kid: When did MLB make their playoffs like NCAA men's basketball? I feel like that's more recent than 2016.

This is the first year of this format. 12 teams: the 3 division winners and 3 wild cards in each league. The top 2 division leaders in each league get a bye. The Wild Card round is a best of 3 with all 3 games being in the higher seed's park. The Division Series is a more traditional 2-2-1 best of 5, while the league championships and the World Series remain a 2-3-2 best of 7.

The previous format (10 teams: the division winners and two wild card teams per league that had a single play-in game) lasted from 2012-2019 and 2021.

2020 had a 'Rona Special 16-team format.

It's nice having the best manager in team history, and the best manager in Red Sox history as well.

If it helps, the Guardian's radio announcer kept saying how nice the park is.  It kind of made me want to see a game there.

The streak that they've been on in September is reminiscent of the 22-game win streak in 2017.  But Cleveland lost in the AL Division series that year.

Sigh. The Red Sox were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs after last night's loss.

Guardians Reddit has been doing that schtick for a few months using the current owner.

Fun team to follow, maybe the most fun team since the breakout '95 team, but built completely different.

Kicking around the idea of going home for the first round of the playoffs.

feels like a cross between '16 and '17.  the momentum of '17 with the 22 game streak, and the sneaking up with no one expecting them to do anything of '16

i don't actually believe in that sort of numerology, but anything can happen in the playoff.  they are the sort of club that are too young to realize that they aren't supposed to be there so the nerves might not affect them like some in their first taste of pressure

and the yankees were the worst team in baseball about 5 minutes ago, so you never know...

How do you double the population of Cleveland overnight?

A: Have the Guardians win the World Series then watch the Cleveland diaspora return for the parade.

Yes.

My wife thought it was a strange outfit to wear camping.

Cleveland has the same number of valid World Series wins this century that Houston does.
