Kind of.  I agree in principle, but I guess I don't see the "crushing" he's talking about, but I temper that with understanding he is setting up his presidential run.

There are plenty of reasons to not particularly want to live in Cali, but the reasons regularly trotted out by people who don't live there are always perplexing. Housing costs aside, the only reason I wouldn't want to live in Cali (anywhere) is the 10 AM NFL kickoffs. My family might live in CST / EST but man colts playing early is never fun.

Plus it's always nice to be able to have some live sports on a relaxing night.

I'm not even specifically digging at Pelosi here, but this is a class-based struggle. The wealthy class will always protect their own interests. Always. It's what they do. They didn't become wealthy by being generous and curbing their own wealth and power. When push comes to shove, they will always defend their wealth over the needs of the working class. That's ... just how it works, and it's absurd for people to pretend that people like Pelosi, in the economic top 0.1%, are suddenly gonna start caring about helping poor people and making their own efforts at enrichment illegal.

That cartoonist for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Ramirez, is a right-wing nutcase who vomits lies almost by reflex. To be expected because the newspaper was purchased in 2015 by Sheldon Adelson.

Don't worry. Nobody outside of the Trump-nutcase-o-sphere believes anything he draws.

The higher-ups in the Democratic Party operation are still haunted by the curb-stomp that wussbag Mondale got from Reagan in 1984 They need to get past that horrible day and become a Dark Brandon in each of their own states.

If the republicans whine that the Democrats are "being divisive", then you know you're on the right track. Throttle up on that "divisive" to 11! Democrat or Nazi. Life or Death! That's the only choice we have in America now!

austerity101: One has to wonder why they haven't been doing this. What is their strategy?

Same strategy they've had for the past 30+ years.

"Young people in the 1990s watched Bill Clinton work with Republicans - to overhaul welfare, try to cut Social Security, deregulate Wall Street - only to see them turn around and impeach him. In the 2000s, they watched Democrats halfheartedly support a war they opposed. Then Obama tried to compromise with Republicans on the size of a post-crash stimulus and the nature of the Affordable Care Act.

None of it calmed Republicans, as younger lawmakers see it, so why not try something else?

'The older members really cling to the idea that things are going to go 'back to normal'' after Trump, Ocasio-Cortez told me. 'For us, it's never been normal, and before that the bipartisanship was s-ty anyway and gave us the War on Drugs, DOMA' - the Defense of Marriage Act, which barred federal recognition or benefits for same-sex couples - 'and stripping the leg[islative] branch of everything.'

[...]

In the absence of an affirmative agenda the party can agree on, the Democratic establishment needs something to inspire voters to show up, and fear of Republicans - and Trump - fits the bill.

For the newcomers, this is completely foreign. To them, Republicans shouldn't be feared, they should be beaten. Ocasio-Cortez told me that she treats Republicans like buffoons because that's how they've behaved for as long as she can remember. 'Even before I was of voting age, I saw Republicans accuse the Obamas of doing a 'terrorist fist bump,' so they've been clowns since I was a teen,' she said."

Yep. If having 50 states was to have a "laboratory" of democracy to see which ones are better than the others, the results are in.

In every metric, the worst ranked states are always the red states. Meanwhile, blue states dominated the top of the rankings. From the economy, healthcare, education, life outcomes, happiness index, teen pregnancy, divorce, employment, etc etc., blue states completely dominate the red states in every category.

Yeah read this about Pelosi today.

This shiat is exactly BSAB fodder. It's really, really hard to find clothespins that for snugly enough when pulling the lever for Democrats when their leadership is pulling this crap.

She needs to be done already. There are others who will fill the role she's played, perhaps with a better sense of ethics and solidarity with those she publicly claims to represent.

The progressive-left was wrong all these years for saying it, but Newsome is right.

2022-09-25 9:31:09 PM
FTFA: ""These guys are ruthless on the other side," Newsom said. "Where are we? Where are we organizing, bottom up, a compelling alternative narrative? Where are we going on the offense every single day? They're winning right now.""

The problem is that progressives believe in liberal democracies and that the basis of power is popular support. So to go out and make changes, they believe (in my view correctly) that they need to garner popular support for the changes they want to make.

To do this, they need to build a narrative for change. They need to convince people to follow them and to support the changes.

Conservatives, on the other hand, only want to maintain the status quo. All they need to do is stymie the narratives that the progressives need to build. They can do this by distraction (such as culture wars), by owning the mass media and refusing to report it, and by making truth-like counter-narratives from their think tanks (such as supply-side economics - not necessarily true but they are convincing enough to many people).

Reactionaries want to reverse the changes that liberals have made over the last centuries, and they want to enforce a minority rule from ethnic, cultural, and nationalistic lines. So they want to inflame their supporters to hate an enemy (usually uppity minorities and liberals) in order for them to support changes in laws that disenfranchise people, skew the voting process, or remove the voting process entirely. So they use a mix of truth-like lies, outright lies, and conspiracies to make their base angry enough threaten or actually commit violence.

And this is where social media comes in. Progressives need mass media to build popular support. They have become better at using social media to get to a large crowd but they still really need mass media.

But conservatives only need to sow doubt, so their job is easier. Mass media tends to follow a professional ethical code where they should examine issues from multiple perspectives (note that many conservative mass media outlets don't do this), and so they have a free ride to insert a plausible but muddling counter-narrative. And then they can follow this up on social media by targetting small groups and raising concerns important to each group.

Reactionaries only need to reach fewer people and make them angrier and to radicalise them. And this is where social media really hits its form, because they can micro-target their messages. Also, social media does not have any editorial control or doesn't abide by any professional journalistic ethical code so they will publish things that main stream media just will not touch. It's easier to lie on social media than mass media.

And the thing is, this is done privately so it's asymmetric. Anyone can see what narratives are being spread on mass media. So it's easier to counter them using a range of messages via private social media channels. And because they're private, it's hard for the others to develop their own counter-counter-narratives because they can't see what's being said.

The old phrase used to be, "A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots on", but now the truth doesn't even know that it needs to put its boots on.

But it's not progressives vs conservatives and reactionaries. It's Democrats vs Republicans.  Democrats don't need to be all progressive, they just need to attract enough moderates to get over the hump.  Now, the historic way to do this was to be moderate themselves.  The Blue Dog coalition was pretty big at one point, but since the Republicans have gone reactionary to the point of removing rights and attacking other rights that moderates like and use, a more aggressive progressive policy can work to offset the difference, which is what Newsom is advocating for.

You now have former and current elected Republican officials saying they are or will vote and stump for Democrats because they do not want reactionary/regressive Republicans running things, and that is despite, and perhaps because of, progressive policy that seeks to restore what was lost (and perhaps a little bit more if possible.. I feel like codifying the right to an abortion is absolutely going to happen if the anti-regressive reaction gains a few Senate seats and holds the House this cycle).

Democrats absolutely need to court the progressive wing of the party to keep enthusiasm up across wings, but, given what has happened this election cycle, it's rights restoration that's on the table, and that's something that everyone in the party plus a bunch of non-Democrat moderates agree on.

Democratic leadership spent 2020 appealing to the "Brave Stands I Almost Took" wing of the GOP, and it didn't do a damn thing to help Democrats. Trump increased his GOP turnout and Biden polled worse with GOP voters than both Obama and Hillary did.

Also, this thinking that "Democrats don't need to be all progressive" is a huge part of why we've suffered through 18+ months of Sinema and Manchin's bullshiat.
