I think it is that the weapon is supposed to be mounted on an armored vehicle and they are using a Toyota pickemup truck instead.  Like attaching that R2D2 anti-missile gun the Navy has to a bass boat.

"Effective". I have to wonder how the rocking of the truck impacted where the rockets landed.

Er, yeah... the body roll might tend to make it slightly less than pinpoint precise.

I forget, does that thing fire smart rounds?

You would think it would be fairly easy to add rigid struts for stabilization during firing, if that sort of thing would be needed.

It fires all kinds of rounds. Depending on what was used here, the rocking truck might not matter.

It certainly should be able to scoot after shooting, very quickly. As long as the rounds are guided vehicles like those could be really useful.

Aren't all modern artillery rockets guided? As long as they get into the air, should be fine.

Rotating it to shoot forward would reduce the rocking, and if they set up some BBQ in the bed they could have dinner ready after the last salvo.

It's artillery. "Close enough" is literally close enough -- if it doesn't destroy the targeted enemy materiel, it will destroy enemy troops standing close enough to the target (or at least their morale).

Also a lot of the time there's not much keeping you from stopping the vehicle briefly to fire.  Sure, possible incoming fire, but ideally you're not going to be stopping in that case.  Most of the time you could just zip it around to support wherever is needed but reasonably far back so that a brief stop isn't any more dangerous than driving around is

It depends. If this is in fact MLRS, that could be up to 70 miles away, though I'd hope GPS guidance would accommodate the rocking across that great of a distance. You'd expect air pressure differences & wind speed to be greater factors than initial angle of launch, I suppose.

But I admit I am internally screaming when I see that rocking.

Unapologetically Canadian: Rotating it to shoot forward would reduce the rocking, and if they set up some BBQ in the bed they could have dinner ready after the last salvo.

Yeah, it's not that difficult to point a pickup in the general direction you want to fire, and you'd get a lot more stability with the engine acting as a counterweight at the front.

They'll figure it out.

Assuming that's actually artillery they're using, maybe. I can't tell what it is. It could be a rocket pod off a downed Russian helicopter.

CSB: my cousin that immigrated to Ukraine back in March has been building mounts for things like this in a machine shop in western Ukraine since his arrival. There are a LOT of improvised pieces of heavy artillery moving around Ukraine right now // CSB

It is a multiple launch rocket system, it is not the rack from an M270. I don't know what it is, but there is no way those tubes are over 12 feet long, based on the truck they are probably about 8 feet long.

I would wager they are unguided, firing maybe five kilometres. They would be close enough to give some Russians a bad day and discourage them from sticking their head up even if they don't hit anything.

And be far enough back that the immediate danger of getting hit is pretty low barring missile counter-fire or artillery or something.  Shoot and scoot would probably handle that most of the time just fine

The first one, probably not at all.  The rocking started after the rocket left the barrel.

The followup shots, not sure.  They didn't exactly wait for it to stop moving.
