In further corrections to official Russian government statements:

* Rumors that Vladimir Putin has uploaded his consciousness into a sexbot with an AK-47 in place of a penis are false, as are reports that he is a Decepticon who can transform into a 1982 Lada Granta. He is neither a robophile nor a robot himself, although technically he has transformed Russia into a . . . *sound of pistol cocking* Moving on.

* The ongoing Special Military Operation in Ukraine was not caused by the Ukrainians digging too greedily and too deep and awakening a Balrog.

* The crowd of chanting and worshipping Lobster Cultists who have been intoning 'Lobster Ftagn' outside Evropeysky Shopping Center for the past week has grown, imperiling the ability of security forces to maintain order. The military cordon around the food court has been penetrated in several places, as white-robed Lobster Cultists have broken through carrying cases of Tasty Period Szechuan sauce or Stars Coffee Gopnik Spice Lattes as tributes or sacrifices to Ska'naag, the extradimensional lobster being which is currently in extreme gastric distress in the Happy Land Funtime Ball Pit. Should the occult scholars studying the Lobsternomicon fail to find a spell capable of sending the beast back to the dim city of Lobstrosa, General Army Staff has announced plans to send in Steven Seagal to engage in hand-to-hand combat. It is believed that no matter how things turn out with that plan, any film we capture of the fight will end up with higher ratings than his last few direct-to-streaming video efforts.

* The Ministry of Culture would like to remind all television watchers that last night's episode of Russian Mythbusters, in which Yuri and Yakov attempted to bust the myth 'can you escape forcible conscription by having your arm gnawed off by street Gopniks' was prefaced with a "Don't try this at home" message for a reason.

* Production of the new T-22 tank, previously stalled by difficulties in acquiring needed components due to the ongoing Western sanctions has been restarted, the Ministry of Production reports. In a rare stroke of luck, an apartment in Moscow was found to be occupied by a hoarder who had died after their piles of old newspaper and cat-pee-stained cardboard boxes collapsed on them, and the material was found to have exactly the qualities tank designers were looking for composite armor. It is hoped that new T-22 tanks will reach the front shortly, and that the roaches and cat litter in the armor will add extra layers of protection for our soldiers.

I want Russia ejected from Ukraine, and Ukraine rebuilt.  Actually I want this whole war to be completely undone, I want that "it didn't happen", right back to before the annexation of Crimea.  Since that is impossible, and wishes and wants are ineffective without action, we'll have to work on the ejection and rebuilding.  But first, the ejection.

Larger deltas are a sign that is progressing.

From a very shiatty and optimistic point of view, their can at least be outcomes from this shiat show that are beneficial in the long run.

In the very least, Russia has been laid bare as a dysfunctional military.

I have faith in the brave Ukrainians, and I hope they thoroughly fark Russia.

In Russian News:  Russian Foreign Minister tells Americans it's time to learn Russian.

The new aphorism was issued by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at his press conference in the United States following the results of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

It all started with the fact that the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry , Maria Zakharova , who led the press conference, turned in Russian to American journalists. They did not understand her, to which Sergey Lavrov immediately commented in English:
"You don't understand Russian? It's time to learn!"

In Russian News: Ukraine promises to take Israel's nuclear weapons to attack Russia

Ukrainian blogger Sergei Klimovsky said that the Kiev regime has the ability to borrow nuclear weapons from Israel or North Korea to strike at the territory of the Russian Federation.

Based on his statements, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr  Zelensky. could make a similar speech under the pretext of an alleged Russian nuclear threat.

"Where Ukraine finds nuclear weapons does not matter, especially when the DPRK declared itself a nuclear power. You can rent it from Israel, <...> and return it if you don't need it, or buy it from the same DPRK, "the journalist said in an article for Glavred.

In addition, he proposed to arrange a terrorist attack on the Russian nuclear power plant.

"There is a nuclear power plant near Belgorod, 40 km from the border, which is quite within reach even for Soviet missile systems," the candidate of historical sciences specified.

In addition, the author of the article proposed to attack the nuclear power plant with the help of Ukrainian special forces.

Arson?

Maybe.

Steel mills have fires all the time, they are handling molten metals and running huge furnaces, so sometimes things happen. What's unusual is that the fire was allowed to spread to a whole building. So whether or not it was started intentionally, it would seem like the plant fire department showed up, said "yep, that's a fire" and walked away. Whether that was motivated by indifference or an eagerness to stick it to the owners, who knows.

fasahd: Forwarded from Zelenski/Official

Criminal mobilization is being used by Russia not only to prolong the suffering of people in Ukraine and further destabilize the world, but also to physically destroy indigenous men who live in territories controlled by Russia.

We see that people, particularly in Dagestan, have begun to fight for their lives. We can see that they understand: this is a question about life. Fight to ensure that your children are not sent to their deaths - all those who may be taken under this criminal Russian mobilization. Because if you come to take the lives of our children, we won't let you go alive.

I emphasize once again: there is a way out. Run away. Or surrender to Ukrainian captivity at the earliest opportunity. I ask all our friends in the information sphere to support the dissemination of this appeal. The more Russian citizens even try to protect their own lives, the sooner this criminal war for Russia will end.

Remember if you give a freezing Russian invader a fire he will be warm for the evening, but if you set him on fire he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Russian authorities on Sunday promised to fix the mistakes in their troop call-up for Ukraine, after some public outrage over students, older or sick people being mistakenly ordered to report for duty.

The French version of the article mentions that the Leader of the Duma admitted there had been errors by local authorities and scolded them for trying to meet their quotas too fast instead of properly.

It's nice to see that VKontakte and Telegram are bringing a little bit of much needed glasnost.

Should make religious folks happy at least. Jesus will be right at the top, no?

/I really don't understand the thinking behind highly religious people so maybe not?

Jew, not Christian.  Jesus has no place in the Jewish religion, exception maybe as a prophet.

Christ was a renegade Rabi who proposed a radical rethinking of the Abrahamic God, and a persons relationship with the organized church.  He may have also been the son of God, if you believe in that.  Either way, it did NOT sit well with the Jewish (or Roman... they liked their conquered people nice and quiet, not in the middle of religious uprising) leadership.

Thus he spun off a new religion, Christianity, post death.

Jewish and Christian faiths have little to do with each other, other than following the same god.  (Kinda, Jews still worship the original thunder, lightning, smiting, and general asshole, Christians follow the 'new and improved' God is Love version)...

Well he was a Jew and he was influential. 50 most influential news right? Hard to beat Jesus. I see lower case t's everywhere.

It does need to be Vodak, could be ethanol or methanol or mouthwash or whatever. Rubbing alcohol or paint thinner, even perfume.

I don't see Fark having a problem with this.  Much of Fark is probably willing to imagine themselves replacing the "distracted boyfriend".

Irony: Putin's anti-gay crusade against the West leading to the largest increase in Russian lesbianism in history.

I figure that lesbianism isn't generally because "there were no male options".   I figure that a condition of "I have to use whatever I'm brave enough to use" is more Paige-ism.

Arson?

Maybe fire department was given mobilization paper?

My metabolism is at the point I have to eat every 6 hours, a serious meal, or my gut tries to burn itself out.

I admit, I'm at least 15 yrs older than that man...  but never in my life have I been that ripped...  you can see the muscles ripple when I work... but there is the middle aged "not going away, fark  you" pouch...

/feeling inferior...

I get you. I also have a very labour intensive job, I also make time for working out. I hike and walk and eat right. If you touch me I am hard everywhere. (Get your hands outta my pants.) I weigh 230 pounds. I ripple when I walk but damn it, I also have that little middle aged pouch that could probably only be removed surgically and have never been as ripped as the guy in the picture.

I suspect though that in terms of endurance and stamina and sheer grit and power, we would probably do better.

Though. Gym bodies are mostly just pretty to look at.

I'll stick with real slab endurance muscle over that..  That boy stops working out for a week or two... it would be hell for him.  We got the middle aged gut, sure... but we'd work him into the ground in an hour.  Hell, I work in a freezer every night, and I sweat enough I get ice forming on me occasionally... :P

Yeah, there's a New York in Ukraine. This has been mentioned in these threads previously.

"New York or Niu-York is an urban settlement in Toretsk urban hromada of Bakhmut Raion of Donetsk Oblast, at 37.9 km NNE from the centre of Donetsk city. From 1951 to 2021, the settlement was named Novhorodske. New York is administratively subordinated to Toretsk city, that is located about 10 km north of New York."

Food distribution?

This is cool and Zelinksy is awesome but somehow I feel a list of the most influential Jews is a bad idea.

Slava Ukraini!

There are quite a few outcomes that are positive, even if Russia wins.

-- Germany finally starts moving away from fossil fuel
-- In general, a large boost to non-greenhouse energy sources
-- In general, Europe becomes less dependent on Russia
-- Russia is pretty much permanently revealed for what it really is.  Sure, there'll be some right-wingers who actually like Russia _more_ now (and the British left wing still seems to just be fantasizing that Russia will bring the Worker's Paradise) but for anyone remotely middle-of-the-road, I think the charade is over.
-- Russia loses significant credibility and influence in central asia and other regions.
-- NATO is given a new lease of life and a clear purpose, like it used to have in the old days
-- Arguably, the EU is strengthened

Of course, if you're pro-China, the whole thing is just unbelievably good.  But even if you aren't, there are a lot of positives.

Just sucks to be one of the ones getting castrated.

Russia is farked. They're exiled and the west is gonna have nothing to do with em after this shiat.

They literally looked at the world and asked "what if we want to be a third world country?"
fark being a military power. Now the whole world knows "they might have nukes that work?"

Russia or the rebirth of the soviet union is pretty much farking doomed.

Good luck rebuilding your inventory with only China and North Korea and some of the middle east willing to sell to you. You were being locked our of dealing with most civilized countries. Then you held natural gas hostage from your dependents. And farking Scandinavia and Ole uncle Sam stepped and said "we got you".

Russia doesn't win shiat even if they can take Ukraine. What they did do is make the western world that much more united.

"Nato is picking a fight with me" is now "Nato is sick of your shiat. And the deck is stacked"

Ukraine aid links

A month and a half into the war (day 44), many of us felt helpless and listless at not being able to do more to help, so here is a list of things that we can do.

There are plenty of charities that could use your help, but even if you don't have spare cash lying about, there are still things you can do, so keep reading

You can donate directly to Ukraine if you want to help them make more videos of tanks blowing up. (See 'military aid' below)

There are lots of humanitarian groups working to feed the displaced people and even their pets.  (See 'humanitarian aid')

And even if you're not in a position to give cash, you might be able to find a group that needs some volunteer help or attend a protest.  If you don't have a group in your area specifically helping Ukraine, you can likely still find other worthwhile causes.  And there are groups that have tasks that can be done online or over the phone without even leaving your home. (See 'other notes'). Even just calling politicians to remind them that we need to support Ukrainians.

You can call out dumbasses online who are spreading russian propaganda and otherwise spewing toxic crap.  (Or join groups like NAFO) And by ignoring or blocking the assholes on here who try that shiat. (Make sure to watch for other threads, not just the daily one)

And you can even support capitalism, and buy stuff made in Ukraine or are fundraisers for the war effort.  (See 'buying stuff')

This is in no way a comprehensive list.  This is just groups that Farkers have mentioned in past threads.  If you want a more comprehensive list, see https://supportukrainenow.org . They also have links to specific groups by country that you're coming from for protests, taking in refugees, etc.  You might also find interesting charities at https://standwithukraine.today/ukrainian-charities/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/tgc00n/want_to_support_ukraine_heres_a_list_of_charities/

I make no claims about any of these groups.  I've trimmed a few that people have said might be suspect, but I have no personal knowledge of any of them.  If you feel the need to vet them before donating, see GuideStar or Charity Navigator.

If you're currently employed by a large-ish company, they may have a donation matching program.  You can check https://doublethedonation.com/but it's also worth contacting your HR to ask even if they're not listed there.

If you've gained profits from stocks, consider donating the stocks directly, so they get the full value and you don't need to hold some back to pay capital gain taxes.

Traitorous policemen working for the occupier were detained in Kharkiv region

A native of Izyum, after the capture of the city, went to negotiate cooperation with the invaders. At first, he was registered as a "precinct officer", later he became the so-called head of local "precinct officers" and personally, together with representatives of the armed formations of the Russian Federation, organized patrols and hunts for pro-Ukrainian citizens.

The second person involved was a law enforcement officer in Volchansk. the Russian invaders appointed him to lead the headquarters in the pseudo-Polit district. Together with the Russian military, he patrolled the streets and regularly reported to curators about the situation in the city.

Both are suspected of high treason. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

I read the uptick in RU aircraft losses as desperation on RU's part. Either they are desperate for a way to try to suppress HIMARS or trying to make up for ammo shortages at the front by increasing air power, or both.

Note: Activity showing up on FIRMS is the lowest it's been since the outset of Putin's special needs operation.

CordycepsInYourBrain: TheDogDidIt: Ukrainian blogger Sergei Klimovsky said that the Kiev regime has the ability to borrow nuclear weapons from Israel or North Korea to strike at the territory of the Russian Federation.

What this means is that russia is planning to stage a nuclear provocation against russian territory. Putin would totally blow up one of his own towns. It's just a much bigger apartment building. I've been downplaying or ignoring the nuclear threat so far, but this has me genuinely worried (at the risk of being accused of being a concern troll).

Ohhh shiat.

I don't know how likely I think that actually is to happen but that's one of those cases where the US might not respond with military force to Russia detonating a nuclear weapon.

Ukraine is under fire. The situation in the regions as of this morning

📍 Odessa region
Around 7 am, the Russians attacked Odessa with kamikaze drones. Three times we got into the administrative building in the city center. The fire is still being extinguished. There were no casualties. One drone was shot down by the air defense forces.

📍 Mykolaiv region
Nikolaev was shelled again at night. Residential buildings are damaged, there are hits in the water supply network. Specialists are already working on the ground. Details about the consequences are being clarified.

📍 Dnipropetrovsk region
5 strikes per night. The enemy fired more than 170 Grad shells and barrel artillery at 3 communities of the Nikopol district. Previously, there were no dead or wounded.

In Nikopol, houses and an electrical substation were damaged. There are more than 3,200 families without electricity.
In Manganese, too, the power grid is distorted. Electricity has disappeared from almost 3,000 families.
In the Chervonogrigoriv community, Russians left up to 500 people without electricity. Private homes, shops, a kindergarten, an outpatient clinic, cars, a pharmacy, a club, a stadium and a gas pipeline were damaged by enemy shells.

Everywhere, immediately after the shelling, emergency teams of power engineers began to work. They plan to fix everything by mid-afternoon.

📍Zaporozhye region
At night, massive attacks of enemy missiles fell on several districts of Zaporozhye and on a village near the regional center in the Zaporozhye region. Now it is known about 3 wounded. Infrastructure facilities were destroyed. An electrical substation has been de-energized in one of the districts. In apartment buildings and private sector buildings, windows were damaged, and in some parts, the roof was also damaged.

📍Donetsk region
On September 24, the Russians killed 2 civilians in the Donetsk region - in Bakhmut. Another 8 people were injured.

It's pretty clear that the mobilization is going pretty much like the invasion did: there's no overall coordination and no real plan was worked out ahead of time.  They're reduced to just grabbing people off the streets with complete disregard to their own "rules".  Which massively increases the panic and discontent in russia.

In the Russian Federation want to force "contract workers" to work indefinitely, and payments and holidays are delayed, - the General Staff

The Russian military is trying to restrict the rights of soldiers on short-term contracts. So in the Zaporozhye direction, the command put the "contract soldiers" of the Russian Armed Forces in front of the fact that they must be in the combat zone regardless of the contract term.

In addition, "partial" mobilization is called the reason for the delay of vacations and cash payments, which already leads to a significant deterioration in the moral and psychological state in enemy units.

I wonder how diligent Russia have been in recruiting and appointing collaborators. It just seems awfully convenient that a lot of the buildings they've been using as headquarters in occupied cities are being targeted quite precisely.

There's got to be more than a few pretending to help the orcs and getting intelligence out.

From a very shiatty and optimistic point of view, their can at least be outcomes from this shiat show that are beneficial in the long run.

In the very least, Russia has been laid bare as a dysfunctional military.

"Äänestysten" on määrä päättyä 27.9.

I dunno.. when you do something so farking stupid it makes the left and right of America agree that it's gotta be stopped, and you make the Swiss say fark neutrality, and you make a white Supremist regiment in Ukraine look like heroes while Poland says Germany can run supplies and shiat by them.

Rain Fall: The Finnish news is reporting that Russia will close their borders to men who could be mobilised. So otherwise only the very young, very old, or very disabled men will be able to leave.

From Ilta Sanomat: (Google translate is your friend. I'm not translating it as that way whoever can translate it into whatever language they want.)

"Äänestysten" on määrä päättyä 27.9.

Per Google Translate.

Opposition media: Russia is preparing to close its borders to men of draft age
Russia is preparing to close its external borders to men of conscription age, says the opposition media Meduza.
In practice, it would mean that men of draft age would not be able to leave Russia.
Meduza bases its information on sources close to the presidential administration.
According to one source, the likely date for the border closure is September 28.  According to another source, the borders will be closed at the point when the "referendums" organized in the occupied territories of Ukraine on joining Russia have been held.  "Voting" is scheduled to end on September 27.

Ouch.

Going to get messy in Russia in a couple days.

They literally looked at t ...

Yeah but: money and profits

No economy means no profit.
And when a country starts grabbing up shiat as state owned it goes two ways. You end up with Norway where all profits and sales of natural gas and petroleum go into a nice savings fund. Or you end up like north Korea and doing business means your assets are automatically the governments

Wonder which way Russia is gonna go

I'm more of a realist.

There needs to be some outside support after russia has been beaten down for their actions. (The country, not the individuals)

They then need stabilization and an example set for how to function without a kleptocracy / oligarchy.

But there still needs to be sanctions.  Maybe a portion of all profits given to Ukraine, etc.  you don't want hundreds of thousands of disgruntled people plotting their revenge and dreaming of the bad old days of the ussr because the current situation is even worse

But you also need to balance it so they know that they lost, and you don't end up with people like in the American south who grew up thinking their side won the civil war, or were just misunderstood and were fighting for states rights because of revisionist historian politicians

Despite the war: 23,000 Hasidic pilgrims arrive in Uman

Every autumn, Hasidic pilgrims from all over the world come to Uman for the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) to celebrate this holiday and pray at the grave of the founder of Bratslav Hasidism. This year, the authorities of Ukraine and Israel have asked pilgrims to refrain from visiting Ukraine. The reason is the high probability of rocket attacks from the occupier. However, the United Jewish Community of Ukraine (UEU) reported that as of the morning of September 25, more than 23 thousand pilgrims had arrived in Uman.

In this regard, Uman introduced certain restrictions and rules:
all visitors are thoroughly checked by the police;
buses with Hasidim enter through a separate checkpoint;
only Hasidim, local residents, and journalists can enter the neighborhood where the pilgrimage takes place;
from September 19 to September 30, the sale of alcohol is prohibited throughout Uman
everyone is asked to observe the curfew.

Putin is flailing so hard looking for a way to get out of this situation with something that looks like a victory.

At first when it became clear he couldn't topple the Ukrainian government and divide the whole of the country however he wanted he decided to reduce his war aims to the eastern and southern territories. Thats not an unreasonable course of action, reduce the scope of your war to something you can more likely manage and then resolve it on favorable terms.

However it's now clear Putin can't even reliability hold the south or east and instead of reducing the scope of his operation, this time he's decided to escalate. Escalation by starting a draft and declaring parts of Ukraine to be integral to Russia. The idea seemingly being if they are "part of Russia" that means they are areas which Russia would protect with nukes (no different than any other country with nukes would use them if needed to protect it's territory) and thus carry greater risk to attack for Ukraine and the west.  This is the same reason why the US made it very clear not to use the weapons it gives Ukraine to attack Russian territory. The US doesn't want to risk that kind of escalation.

But Putin is missing the mark and seems to be hoping Ukraine and the West are bluffing or will seek a settlement when they've given no indication that they will unless all territories are liberated. No country of consequence in this conflict will recognize Russia's new territorial claims, and Putin lacks the military power to enforce those claims. Starting a draft so far doesn't look like it's going to make the Russian Army more capable, in fact it's likely to make it worse. So if he can't enforce his claim with military power and no large country that supplies Ukraine will recognize those claims (and thus not pressure Ukraine to not attack them the way they pressure Ukraine not to attack Russian territory) then his strategy seems to lack the connection between means and ends, ie what makes a strategy work.

You could always say "what about nukes" but I'd always argue nukes have extremely limited tactical value and would carry unlimited potential risks for Putin.

On a tactical level nukes could destroy large troop formations or supply depots, but you still have to be able to reliably identify these targets. Nukes have a large area of effect but you can't just haphazardly drop them along the front line and rear areas. Nukes also can't hold territory, which is the one thing Putin is absolutely desperate to do.

On a national and global level using nukes would likely turn significant portions of the military and intelligence establishment against him as well as likely leave him without the support of China or India which has sold them weapons and bought their oil. It opens the risk for Putin that the major powers of the world make his removal a goal, something they haven't done yet, which would be a situation Putin would have a hard time escaping and a major distraction

China seems to still be quietly business-friendly, and India too, since they have some military hardware R&D deals with Russia. But there's a big void in Russia right now, which means two things:

1) Lack of competition; and
2) Room for rapid growth

That is big potential for profiteering, and people aren't going to ignore it forever. As soon as the politics start to calm down a little, they're going to be testing the waters to see what they can get away with PR-wise before packing the proverbial carpet bags.

Here's the issue with that. In order to do it, the Russian crime system would have to have been driven out of control. I don't think that is going to happen. They won't let others profit from Russian misery, that's their job, and they are far more direct in their actions. About the time the fifth attorney for MegaCorp is beaten for three weeks and released with absolutely no chance of the gangs being punished, everyone else will decide that it just isn't worth it.

Weirdly enough, despite that, western corporations have somehow profited in Russia for decades.

For other helpful links, check out Oneiros's list for Ukraine aid links, notmyjab's thread directory and other notables, and danceswithcrows's memery emporium. Well, boys and girls, I guess we really got us a war now that Putin's finally declared a partial mobilization. There's so much information in these threads that I'm sure I've missed quite a lot, but this is your (extraordinarily belated) Ukraine War Thread update for the week of September 17 through September 24 (Days 206 to 213):

Juc's reasonable trigger warning: There are lots of tortured dead bodies showing up in the news as we find out more about Russia's war crimes in Izyum, so maybe stay off Telegram. But please do remember to look at the map.

Lest you forget the kind of savages the Russian soldiers are, mass graves found in Izyum (lots of them). In one particularly tragic case, 8 people across 4 generations of 1 family were found slaughtered together. Zelensky has invited international journalists to visit the graves as Ukraine begins the grisly task of investigating the depths of Russian depravity (not that this is new for Russia). Hundreds of war crimes have already been documented. For their part the Kremlin is whining that turnabout is not fair play and Ukraine shouldn't be targeting pro-Russian officials despite Moscow making several attempts on Zelenksy's life (an example of a pro-Russian official who FAFO-ed). They have also fired up the troll farms to claim that the mass graves aren't graves but rather "training exercises'' (includes one Viktor Orban, PM of Hungary). Maybe they should get their MPs on the same page? Amid all this nonsense, India's PM Narendra Modi rebuked Putin, and with India's importance to Russia's cash flow right now there is not much Putin can do to retaliate.

The Ukrainian offensive in Kharkiv Oblast has slowed down. In all likelihood the ZSU is regrouping because their troops outran the supply train's ability to keep up, but mud season is also coming soon. The key objective right now is to entrench around recaptured towns and cities, using the Oskil as a natural barrier while they focus their remaining offensive power in the Lyman direction to great effect. In that vein, NATO countries continue to provide Ukraine with significant aid. The US allocated another $600m which will include HIMARS ammunition (about the only argument against sending aid is that the US should shell undocumented immigrants...wait, what?) while Lithuania will repair howitzers with combat damage and is sending their M113 APCs. Just a reminder, though, there might not be as much old stock lying around that's ready to give as we think (Ukraine's good at keeping things running, though). I guess it's good that Russia's been freely donating so much of their war materiel lately. At this rate, Ukraine may reach numerical superiority in some weapons categories soon (HIMARS says they have practical superiority in MLRS).

A great (but long) thread on how the ZSU broke through Russian lines in Kharkiv Oblast. Seems that they really took to the training (especially for NCOs) we offered them in the wake of the Crimean invasion.

In addition to war crimes, Russia's committing regular old crimes. Turns out the "Work (as a mercenary) makes you free" scheme is against Russia's own laws, not that it's stopped Prigozhin and the Wagnerites.

First the prison brigades, now blocking units of commissars? What else will they bring back from the Stalinist era?

And on that note, seems we have a war finally. Despite claiming only 6,000 dead personnel, Russia has partially mobilized, calling up 300,000 reservists although some reports suggest it could be up to 1 million. The propaganda mouthpieces are calling this a brilliant move. Russia's economy did not react well to the partial mobilization, and there are protests in Moscow now. Russia's ethnic minorities (non-Slavs) are bearing the brunt of it, though. The general reaction so far has been to question whether Putin can even bring these troops to bear and, if he can, how much it will look like Napoleon. Or Hitler. A lot of Hitler parallels (not a Godwin). I was confused by the partial mobilization, viewing it the same as Robin Williams viewed partial nuclear disarmament, and I'm not the only one around these parts who's confused.

There do seem to be a lot of dead guys higher up the Russian business ladder lately. It's probably nothing.

Ukraine continues to troll Russia about the Moskva, claim they sent a barge in Kherson to join the Black Sea submarine fleet. Kind of funny that all of this started with Russia annexing Crimea because they wanted to secure a warm-water port (the oafishal reason of "protecting ethnic Russians" was just window dressing) given that they've now more or less abandoned all port facilities.

And also lest we forget, Russia is still threatening the ZNPP. The International Atomic Energy Agency has officially adopted a resolution demanding that Russia stop all actions at the ZNPP and all other nuclear power plants in Ukraine.

Wenchmaster sums up a lot of what we've learned about Russian propaganda and mentality (thanks to BadCosmonaut for his insights and humor!).

Former Soviet Bloc countries seem to be taking advantage of Russia's well-broadcast weakness to rattle their sabers a bit, see if there are any juicy parts to slice off their neighbors, and settle old scores. And who knows, maybe even a chunk of Russia itself. It sounds far fetched right now, but this time last year most people thought Russia wouldn't invade. 7 months ago a lot of people expected Kyiv to fall immediately. Far fetched might be the new normal. Russia is definitely alienating a lot of its old allies, and some are feeling the pinch of internal dissent.

In other news, the only countries left to ratify Sweden and Finland's NATO applications are Turkey and Hungary. Real shocker, those two. On a related note, the EU is changing their voting rules to stop Hungary from farking it up for everyone else.

NAFO's chart to help you identify types of idiots. The meme war continues apace elsewhere.

Caption this. And this. And this. So many happy reunions in Ukraine these days, including some Azovstal defenders! Remember their sacrifice.

The perfect boom, an anatomical essay.

I'm wondering if that publication sees the Palestinians as the Russians in their situation.

Probably not, and here's why:  Russia was not facing an existential crisis in any literal way. Jews during WWII were facing a literal existential crisis. Then after the establishment of the Jewish state, they immediately faced multiple more existential crises from their neighbors. Finally, overt attempts to destroy them and their small state failed and it switched to asymmetrical warfare. That has largely been extinguished. However, there is most assuredly still an existential threat against Israel.

So we've established the differences between the Russian and Israeli situations. Now on to a second, separate question: What of the welfare of the Palestinians? That is a legitimate question. All information is viewed from a point-of-view and within a context. The Israeli point of view and context is different than the Palestinian point of view and context, and that of their neighbors. Discussing this is beyond the scope of this thread.

Ginning up some pretext to start or escalate aggressions has been a feature of warfare throughout history.

It's debatably rational, but the gist is to establish some moral claim of righteousness to sell to the population to justify embarking on the course of action you've already decided to do.

That's possible as well, and it would mean Putin is again off his mark. Russia's population has clearly shown it's opposition to the war

Nope. Russia's population is overwhelmingly somewhere between "just fine with" and "openly excited about" the war. What they're opposed to is having it affect their life in any negative way whatsoever, and especially about being forced to participate in it like some underprivileged minority.

DON.MAC: Hooferatheart: White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan promised Sunday that there would be "catastrophic" consequences if Russia used a nuclear weapon in Ukraine and said the US will enact further economic sanctions against Russia if the Kremlin completes its "sham" referenda.

"If Russia crosses this line, there will be catastrophic consequences for Russia. The United States will respond decisively. Now in private channels, we have spelled out in greater detail exactly what that would mean," Sullivan told Chuck Todd on NBC's "Meet The Press."

I wonder if those private channels have included discussions like "we will end your ability to use nuclear weapons entirely.  We will end your ability to defend yourself and will let the Chinese know exactly where your weak points are.  They need your lithium, oil and rare earth elements and we will help them."

This. And the West will benefit from this access too. I honestly don't see a scenario where everything east of the Urals doesn't become a vassel state of China after Putin is dead. It feels inevitable.

Given the gender imbalance they're creating, this isn't bad advice.

There would be an instant theater wide no fly zone at the very least. I'd imagine NATO airstrikes on Russians in Ukraine as well. No boots though.

Agreed. Russia using a nuke will see more vipers, raptors and raiders than an SFX heavy episode of Battlestar Galactica. Blue team will get air superiority and everything that looks like Russian military hardware will get a JDAM in its engine block.

I'm normally on the other side of this argument. Russia using nukes anywhere outside its internationally recognized borders will see immediate military action by NATO.

Inside its borders, too? Can you walk me through that argument? It's not that I don't believe it, just that I haven't thought that scenario through.

the mere idea that the "Russians 'Nuclear False Flag' themselves so that they can blame it on Ukraine who 'borrowed' the bomb from another regime" is so ridiculous that i don't want to address it but here we are.

They'd have to convince Russians of this and I think Putin is already starting to lose the public.

So what if they convince the Russians?  the rest of the world will never buy it and won't allow it as an excuse for offensive nuclear strikes on Ukraine without total retaliatory efforts against Russia.

It seems that the problem of ethnic minorities uprising in east Asia is a problem beyond the borders of Russia.  China does not really want to see the Russian Federation break up.  Or at the very least, they don't want THEIR minorities seeing it happen.  Brutal repression of minorities is a problem in China as bad or worse than Russia.

This Russian mobilization is a pretty clear attempt to use mass to stem the metaphorical bleeding on the battlefield through mass, but this is very unlikely to work. A (short) thread on mass:
- B. A. Friedman (@BA_Friedman) September 25, 2022

this doesn't matter?

What he's saying is that it doesn't matter as long as the AFU are well supplied. Long gone are the days when a large mass of soldiers made enough of a difference against a qualitatively better, but smaller, well supplied force.

Think about three well-trained US marines with all the ammo they want against ten or random off the street with a mish-mash of weapons and not all that much ammo and equipment on territory the marines know well.  He is telling you he thinks this is that kind of mismatch.

I was trying to make a lame-ass physics joke on the difference between mass and weight (m*g).

New York?

Yep - threw me when it first started popping up too.

"New York or Niu-York is an urban settlement in Toretsk urban hromada of Bakhmut Raion of Donetsk Oblast, at 37.9 km NNE from the centre of Donetsk city."

It's funny, Boston's nearest neighbor Newton should be spelled Niuton based on pronunciation...
Newcomers call it "nooton" and everyone knows... no it's New like "Not Old".

Pronounce Worcester for us.....

/English is an awful language
//"burgh" isn't pronounced "borough" in the states either

Old joke I heard recently: people in Massachusetts think "Worcester" is one syllable, while people in Texas think "yup" is three.

But how does each pronounce this?

Whatsthishere Sauce

Worshtisheer sauce.

Wust-er-shur

worst-a-shire is how i grew up hearing it

I can't seem to say it without sounding drunk.

"Read this bottle!"
"Wurshesher shaush. Oshiffer."
"Take him away!"

Sounds like the problem that Sean Connery would've suffered if he asked a lady to sit on his face...

Father_Jack: ⚡Scholz explains decision not to send tanks to Ukraine.

In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz argued that no other G7 country has sent their own tanks to Ukraine either, saying that the decision to deliver certain weapons systems must be coordinated first with all allies.

Die Welt reported earlier that German manufacturer Krauss-Maffei Wegmann was ready to supply Ukraine with 100 Leopard 2A7 tanks and provide spare parts and training sessions for soldiers worth 1.55 billion euros.

According to Die Welt, Scholz did not react to the offer.

Shameful. What a pussy

I thought Spain offered their tanks as well.

I wonder, the people who designed these weapons, if they understood that their specific weapons would rarely if ever be neaded by the US armed forces themselves, as the US would almost certainly never engage in the type of warfare where weapons like these would be needed (would prob lead to nuclear warfare if they were directly involved), if those designers are now seeing how actually effective and game-changing there weapons have proven to bee and feel some level of pride because of it.

Juc: someone talking about mass who has nothing to do with physics.
well at least not theoretical physics.

This Russian mobilization is a pretty clear attempt to use mass to stem the metaphorical bleeding on the battlefield through mass, but this is very unlikely to work. A (short) thread on mass:

Someone should tell those people that you don't stem bleeding by throwing more blood and guts at it.

...on second thought, no, don't tell them that.
