AYE, lads!

I am a lifelong insomniac, and I find I get better sleep when I'm not trying so hard.  Nice to see it's validated by science.

Read "Fast Asleep" by Dr. Michael Mosley.  It's the most practical sleep guidance I've ever read.

- You can't win.  Stop trying.

I think I'll stick with insomnia, thanks.

Obviously, you need the services of a professional (self-declared) sleep coach, by the night or week, annual discounts may apply.

I use this. I'm out in minutes, and household sounds no longer wake me up.

Sleep and I have never been friends. If I had my druthers I would never sleep. There's so much I want to do, to see, to learn, to say; but this stupid meat suit needs rest as part of its maintenance.

After years of trying to conform to what everyone other than me says I should do about sleep I just let it all go.

I'm lucky to have a job with no real schedule other than a once a week deadline. So I wake up when I wake up, I sleep when I'm tired. Most days that amounts to a 5-7 hour big sleep and a 1-2 hour little sleep. Note I did not mention times, because the alertness times vary wildly. If I'm doing something physically demanding I sleep more. If I'm all up in my head I sleep less.

My personal record for for consecutive alert hours is 36.

My only difficulties with this pattern is when I need to interact with the regular-timed world. I'm an inveterate appointment rescheduler, because when I pick a time for an appointment more than a week out I dunno if it will be a good time until a few days before. When it comes to deeply scheduled people like doctors I usually just make it work and may or may not be a zombie for that appointment.

One thing is absolutely clear though. When I listen to my body and sleep when it's tired I sleep like a baby and wake ready to go.

i got off coffee a few years ago because of anxiety issues, but i still had sleeping problems. marijuana can help sometimes, but also can keep me up depending on the circumstances.  and I'm certainly not gonna stop that

i stopped eating a huge bar of dark chocolate every day, reduced my sugar intake in other ways, and started stretching for 30 minutes a day, and sleep troubles me no more

I listen to stuff like this and other assorted 10 hr. "sleep" soundtracks:

Also, if the voices in my head won't shut up, I let them go on. I fall asleep faster that way than if I try to shut them up.

Dark chocolate is full of caffiene and theobromine, a stimulant similar to caffeine but has a half life of abt 10/12 hours vs caffeines 6/8 hours

Why does only getting 4-5 hours of sleep suck? 4 hours might be your natural stopping point and staying in bed longer will simply leave you tired. Try getting up when you wake up.

CSB: I used to sleep 12 hours a day, easily. Then one day .... I didn't. Idk what happened whether it was stress or something, but now I only sleep about 2 hours at a time and then I get up. I'm perfectly rested and happy. I may 'take a nap' later in the day, but if it's 2 hours long it's basically a "sleep" for me.  I don't sleep on society's schedule anymore. I'm out walking or reading or doing something quiet.

If I've been drinking or working out heavily I will probably sleep 4 to 6 or more hours, but there has to be a reason I've slept that long.

The only way my current sleep schedule sucks is if I'm staying at a friend or relatives house and I didn't bring a book or something to occupy myself. When I'm hotelling I usually discover cool parts of the city because I'm out for a walk or drive at odd hours of the night.

Listen to your body, it might be telling you something.

Id be concerned abt 2 hours a nite.  Sleep is largely mental not physical rest.
They say einstein slept 10 hrs a nite.  Idk if that was late in life or his whole life.

As ive gotten older i sleep less and its not as soundly.  Abt 6 or 7 hrs at best   when i was a young adult i slept 8 to 9.  I preferred that sleep than now.  If i slept 9 i could conquer the world.
W 6 or 7 i get by

I used to pick up a big technical book like chemistry or programming, and lay down and start reading. Sooner or later I'd drop the book on my face, mission accomplished...
