If you're at a point where you create a custom diet, you're either well off or going to fail.

Hmm - oddly I haven't noticed any more depression since I started eating Impossible now and again, maybe it was just subsumed in the regular depression?  Or I have anti-depression superpowers!

Weirdly when I find myself in depression/suicidal hell, raw fish is my comfort food. Sushi/ Sushi burrito or ahi bowl are like a little glimpse of happiness

Whatever makes sense.  The idea makes me want to run screaming but hey, if it works for you and doesn't hurt anything?  Cool

I swear to gosh I did not mimic this guy's facial hair. When I saw Tombstone in theater my pre-teen self decided I would look more like this but with long sideburns:

Thanks to the pandemic I got kind of lazy and went full beard just because I could. Now I don't look like either of them.

Not sure if I'm going to keep it, but it's gratifying in a way to know that I can. Growing hair on your face is awkward because it's a very time-sensitive process and people you deal with on a regular basis will judge you for it during the growing period. And frankly I judged myself during those periods as well.

They were eating BBQ brisket and ribs, but got bit by a lonestar tick and now have a meat allergy, thereby denying them the smoky, meaty deliciousness. That would make a lot of people depressed.

Been there. Done that. A little over a year before I could eat red meat again.

That sucked. But godsdammit the first time I ate a burger without crying and holding onto the porcelain God for dear life was farking amazing.

Then the other fark up was living on sirloin. Cause godsdamnit I can eat steak everyday. Went from puking red meat cause my body said nope to puking steak cause godsdammit I can eat steak.

Do not recommend waking up to 70+ ticks in the woods. How I don't have Lyme disease I'll never know.

Well, I'm not a vegetarian, but I have been one several times in my life. Lost a lot of weight and felt great both times, but there were some negatives that made me quit.

That said, "vegetarian" covers a lot of territory. You can eat a bowl of cereal and use Dr. Pepper instead of milk, and call yourself a vegetarian. I've known vegetarians that if you took them out to eat, would just eat french fries.

If you don't put some thought into it, you can end up eating a lot of heavily processed junk food and still call yourself a vegetarian.

/It's easier to be a healthy vegetarian when you are rich.
//And that's why I'm not a vegetarian.

I remember an interview with the author of Laurel's Kitchen. Way back when vegetarian let alone vegan restaurants were rare she ran one of the first places that catered to the meatless crowd, although it wasn't up to today's Vegan Kosher standards. She said the pure herbivores were the most argumentative and aggressive customers.

You can be iron deficient without being anemic. Recommend checking out your ferritin. Lots of enzymes etc need iron and activity can be affected before true anemia is manifested. Low iron stores are known to be associated with both depression and migraines.

Definitely need an iron supplement if you are vegetarian unless you make a very conscious effort to eat enough though it is slightly easier now with the various meat substitutes are heavily fortified (an impossible burger is just as good as ground beef for iron, etc.). This is especially true for premenopausal women.

Meh. I like meat quite a bit. But these days, I start craving something lighter once I hit about 3 days in a row of beef or pork for a meal. This weekend was all salmon and bone-in chicken thighs, and I'm planning to make dal tadka tonight.

If you only eat fries, that's a vegan diet. Gluten free too.

One thing I have noticed is that many vegans and vegetarians I have met socially don't seem to want to put spices into their food. Often, if they serve you food it is some sort of watery, underspiced, amazingly overcooked at the same time as being undercooked, vegetable stew.

Personally, I could cook you a vegan channa dal that would be creamy, tasty, and would go great on your chips. You just need to use enough coconut cream and spices.

Of course there have been exceptions, like the one time I was presented with a vegan stew where good browning was obtained in the onions at the start, excess water was eliminated, some nice red wine was added, and each vegetable was cooked just right because they were added in a staggered fashion so they had the right amount of time to cook before serving. That was delicious, unfortunately as I say it was the exception.

didn't you just do a thing where you were eating tons of raw fish? i assumed it had something to do with eating to  hit the gym, not comfort foods. well, at least you can get good raw fish where you live, i had some serious doubts about utah sushi and poke before you reported back......

even cooked sushi, like unagi or california roll maki, can taste like happiness when it's done well!

i could write another long comment about how "ethical veganism" is actually not a diet but an evangelical religion all its own and post some tool "life feeds on life" but i do that every time......

they are aggressive because they feel superior and thus entitled. which is crap, yet very simple psychology.

if they seem like annoying jerks just WAIT until you meet a fruitarian who rejects germ theory! they are completely consumed by what they eat and planning and prepping their food, like the only "career" they can have is an influencer in their community, they don't have time for anything else in life. and their community shuns people who leave the lifestyle, so it's basically like being a cult member without the charm of a cult leader in the mix.

people drawn to such things are probably often predisposed to mood disorders is my guess (as a person with a mood disorder).

eat what makes you happy! in moderation.

strict vegans get happy over what they DON'T eat and then feeling righteous about it. they are basically anti-hedonists. no wonder they are prone to sadness.
