If it doesn't look like a bug I might be less apprehensive, but either way the social benefits of bug meat is enough to at least get me to try it.


Powdered as a protein supplement is probably the way to go. Likely less water intensive than things like almond flour. Unfortunately bug flours are still very very expensive.

I do t think these are for human consumption. A lot of work is being made to get black soldier fly larvae to eat pig crap and then feed the larvae back to thr pigs. Would help with the pollution issues inherent with large scale pig farming (in the old days you'd just place it back on the fields but now there is way too much manure concentrated in too little of an area).

Can someone explain why bugs?   Not lentils?
Lobsters and crabs don't require heavily managed agriculture.
They are also more or less boil and eat.  Bugs then need to be substantially processed into nutraloaf.

As long as it's mandatory that they put it on the package, I'll have no problem.  For God's sake if you're going to feed it to someone else, farking tell them before they eat it.

Honestly while I like animals in general, I think that most animals are kind of stinky and gross and I don't want to be anywhere near them. That goes for human animals as well.

So while what I think of as "bugs" may ick me out a little because they are annoying (how the F did that giant-ass cricket get into our office) when they are processed into a food object nobody is really going to make the connection.

Straight up eating bugs unprocessed tho? Hard no. Yes it's a cultural thing. Yes I believe they deserved to die and I hope they burn in heck.

I once ate stir fried mealworms at a bug themed fair by the etymology department at Purdue.   They were clearly mealworms and somewhat crunchy.  Pretty good actually.  I'd eat them again.

No foodstuff grosses me out though.  I eat everything.  Even Papa John's.

So you eat chitterlings and hoghead cheese?


Yes. My wife is Eritrean, so a family gathering will include intestine and tripe.  I'm pretty used to tripe now as a habit of eating pho.

I'd imagine because bugs would require almost zero management other than keeping them confined, which in a determined industrial situation wouldn't be that hard.  They don't cost anything, you can scoop 'em up by the shiatload, no real upkeep just throw some food scrap trash down there now and again, they reproduce at redonkulous rates.  It would have some advantages

Oh, it's this article again. It's been a while, now that I think of it.

Make them tasty, and not in the "acquired taste" or "good with beer when fried and covered in salt" sense. Everything is tasty fried and covered in salt, especially when you're drunk. The meat:exoskeleton ratio is crap for almost every insect, and anyone who tried to bite into a shrimp tail already knows chitin is about as appetizing as a toenail.

But again, figure out how to do it right and I'll probably be all over that with a bunch of others. I've already ticked "eaten weird crap from a bioreactor" off my bucket list. What's one more?

A few months ago, I took a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico.  Apart from being a nice place to visit, the food was good all the way through my five day trip (three meals/day).  I'm a serious food appreciator by way of having a serious foodie wife and thereby have learned to try and appreciate about anything good cooks can make.  Among the many food delights available in Oaxaca are several dishes that incorporate bugs.  I tried them all and they were damn good.  Would eat bugs again.  Reflect for a moment on the foods you all eat on the regular.  Christ on a crutch, some of that shiat is nasty yet everyone eats it up with a smile on their face.

One of my college acquaintances got super into the prepper life and has his own alternative protein supply, which is just two aquarium tanks vertically separated by a very fine screen. Bugs and the pet store snake bedding go in the top with food and heat, eggs fall through to the bottom into more snake bedding, which creates more bugs. Every month or so, he takes the top stuff out and moves the bottom to the top. Filter out the animal bedding and he processes the bugs through a grinder to mix with meat.

If you don't know, you can't taste it. I think his long term goal is 100% no trips to the grocery store, ever.
