Subby.  BS Ted was giving his speech in Austin. Austin is the seat of Travis County.

This is how Travis County voted in 2020:

As you can read, this isn't real irony; this is more "rain on your wedding day" ironic.

He's a great example of someone who shouldn't be a Senator.  Yeah, let that sink in!  What I mean is that he went to Washington to join his party and he completely forgot about representing his state and the people in it.

It can be argued that he does represent some people in Texas, half or less than half, but the motherf*cker tried to fly to Cancun during a disaster.  I think we all know who he is, we all know who he is in Texas for better or worse, and if he manages to be re-elected I think I will burn something to the ground.

The correct number of cops to have in schools is zero.

Ask queer and non-white kids why.

2022-09-25 12:57:25 AM
Cruz argued that gun control measures punish "law-abiding citizens" instead of criminals, though the audience seemed to disagree with him at some points.

"If you want to stop crime," Cruz said, "you target the bad guys. You target the criminals, the felons, the fugitives."

The thing is, gun owners are law-abiding ... until they aren't. And by the time they stop being law-abiding, it's too late.

It doesn't matter if the cops get trained because they aren't obligated to save anyone.

FTFA: "Two weeks ago, I stood on the Senate floor and tried to pass legislation I've introduced that would double the number of police officers in school"

Tell them what else it did, Ted. It also stated that once the schools received funding they couldn't teach anything related to "CRT", and left that term completely undefined, so jackwagons like you could claim that any US history fact as being remotely critical must be shut down regardless of how accurate it may be. Next, tell them that by accepting the funds, the schools would have to remove any provision that allowed for abortion services from any provided health care plan.

You put poison pills throughout your "bill" and then act all butthurt when everyone saw it for what it was and decided to not even let it advance. It was specifically designed to fail so you could use it as a campaign speech, you disingenuous turd.

Sooo put them in jail before they comit mass murder. On what grounds? Aren't many of these young killers first time offenders or at best they have some misdemeanors that republicans feel "shouldnt ruin a young man's life"? Doesnt he oppose any background checks that might uncover mental instability that could disqualify you from purchasing a weapon? It is refreshing that even texans are finally seeing thru the bullshiat

I mean, he's right.  It creates an environment of aggression that is often turned toward queer and non-white kids.

I shudder to think what would have happened to my disabled ass in high school as I fought for basic civil rights if cops had been there.  It's frightening to think about and I need to look at silly memes on imgur to forget about it once the thought hits.

You are also correct that the number should be zero anyway.

I recall seeing some weird news item after that the Uvalde police department supposedly deputized biker gangs to help keep reporters away from the kids' funerals. When asked, the police denied doing it, which made me wonder why bikers were there saying they'd been deputized.

Anyway, the number you're suggesting might need to to be fudged one way or the other.

As a non-American, I still find it incomprehensible that police officers are needed for schools, that metal detectors are needed for schools, that students need active shooter drills, that classrooms are equipped with gear to stop a shooter from entering a classroom, that companies market and sell bullet-proof backpacks for children, etc.

I lived in the US and some of my students lived through the Columbine High massacre. That was 1999. These students now have their own school-aged kids. It's just bewildering that it's not only still going on a full generation later, but it's getting worse.

School shootings are like a forest fire.

You know those C-130s firefighters use when battling forest fires? Imagine one of those, except the foam or water or whatever they usually use is replaced with chlorine trifluoride. In this analogy, school shootings are a forest fire, and cops are the chlorine trifluoride.

Have you ever tried to put out a fire with a chemical which can literally set fire to fireproofing material? If you have, did you notice how the chemical only made the fire worse?

2022-09-25 1:42:51 AM
The concept of adding more police to schools to combat shootings has always been absurd regardless of how many officers you're talking about. Mass shooters are generally attention-hungry cowards looking for notoriety at any cost. The reason they target schools is sometimes because they hold some sort of grudge against that particular location, but mainly because they are soft targets.

Even if you were to beef up school security to the point where it resembled an army base they would just move to a different soft target, we've already seen this with people perpetrating shootings in grocery stores. It is simply not feasible to secure every potential location someone might consider targeting, the only thing that adding more police to schools would accomplish would be to waste limited resources which are already spread very thin.

To be fair, the correct number of cops total is zero, at least the cops we have now. The sort of cops we ought to have might actually have a place in schools.

Ah, the Nazis tried to make a flamethrower with that stuff.  Didn't work. Or possibly worked too well, depending on your point of view.

Anyway, outside of school shooting times, which police offers in schools are proven to not do very well with, what would the police be doing the rest of the time?

Just to be explicit (I know you agree, but for the thread):

The reason I said to ask queer and non-white kids is because they're the ones that cops target in schools. They have first-hand knowledge about why cops in schools is a bad idea. SROs brutalize and bully POC and queer kids in school. Especially Black kids. This is known. And of course it's known, because it's exactly how cops act outside of schools.

I'm a bit more concerned that he seems to be grouping in students with 'criminals, the felons, the fugitives', because why else would he add more police into schools, who else would they target?

"If the objective is to stop these crimes, gun control is singularly ineffective.  . . . If you want to stop crime," Cruz said, "you target the bad guys. You target the criminals, the felons, the fugitives. You prosecute them, you put them in jail, you get them off the streets. . . ."

Talk about singularly ineffective. I know Cruz doesn't know anything about the law, since he's not a lawyer or wasn't ever solicitor general for Texas or anything, so maybe someone could inform him that, in fact, it's a crime under both state and federal law for felons to have firearms.

Lots of people get prosecuted for it every day. You even have people who get convicted of felonies such as possession of less than a gram of cocaine and 20 years later get arrested with hunting weapons and go to prison for it. Also, when you commit a crime with a firearm, there's usually a sentencing enhancement for it.

In fact, committing crimes is generally illegal everywhere in the country, and we have multiple law enforcement agencies everywhere to investigate and arrest people: ATF, DEA, FBI, HSI, Secret Service, state troopers, county sheriffs' departments, city police, state bureaus of investigation, postal inspectors, agricultural inspectors, Coast Guard, military police, and those are only some of them. If having lots of police makes you a police state, America is the policiest police state that ever policed.

And yet we still have mass murders. . .

Except for everywhere else in the world it has been tried.

40 years of gaslighting has ruined the US. Fact and fiction is indistinguishable to large swaths of Americans.

I'll admit to not being the most clever person, but I cannot imagine any way to fix this problem. Its only getting worse.

The only reason I know what's in the bill he introduced is because he started whining at some dude on an airplane who was recording him. I decided to see what it was. Bam, CRT and abortion stuff in a bill about protecting schools from active shooters. Cruz was basically trying to squeeze in an expanded Hyde Amendment into a "protect our kids from getting shot by adding more cops to schools act"

I don't think any news organizations ever commented on it.
