I suspect the crime rate in Japan compared to everywhere in the world is the reason Japan's vending machine industry can exist.

When I was a kid used to travel through New York on the turnpike and the rest areas had vending machines that had just about everything in them. Bird calls, magic tricks, all kinds of crazy stuff.

I'm kinda surprised we don't.  Instead of paying people to man the shop or bodega, you can pay one person to clean and check the machines at several locations.

Sounds like a "job creator" dream.

The YouTube channel "Dancing Bacons" has a lot of videos of various Asian vending machines. And as a bonus, no narration!

Singapore seems to have a ton of cool modern ones, while Japan's look run down and most still only accept cash.
