She's been deserving for awhile, and "you've never been a head coach" is a shiatty excuse.

I'm not saying she isn't deserving but she landed in a very loaded LV Aces team.

I'm not saying teams should only hire first-time head coaches, but the choices are almost always first-time head coaches or chumps who got fired from their last job.

You don't even have to go back far to find the proof that it's a shiatty excuse - Nash, Mosley, Udoka, Ham, Green, Billups, Unseld...all within the last two years or so.

Funny how they rarely apply that logic to men.

More than half of the head coaches in the NBA lucked into the role and aren't good enough to carry Gregg Popovich's water. Becky Hammon is good enough to hold her own against her mentor. Most current NBA teams would do themselves a solid by firing their current coach and replacing them with Becky immediately.

Sure they do. It's just what they do to people they don't want to hire, whether it's because they're sexist, racist, enamored with someone else, or they just plain don't like the person.

It's part of why it's almost impossible to prove hiring discrimination anywhere else - there's always SOME reason not to hire everyone but the person you want to hire.

It is a shjtty excuse, however I am willing to believe it could be a real one.  Some NBA teams favor someone who has head coaching experience in college (or another NBA team although as pointed out it usually means they had been fired) over another person who was only an assistant coach in the NBA.

Don't know if that's the real reason, kind of doubt it, but not completely out of the question.

The most important characteristic of any manager in any job is to gain the respect of the people you manage.   Sports, business, schools ... does not matter.   If there was any chance that the players would respect her and not just see what they could get away with and hope for a male coach to replace her, then she would already have the job.   It is human nature, multiplied by tons of testosterone and peer pressure.   She could be the best strategist in the world  and not be able to handle a bunch of man-children.

The only one I'm aware of recently that was a new face with prior head coaching experience was Finch. None of the others had that I'm aware of.

Pretty much none of these things are coming from players. NBA players have already played for Hammon and respect her. This is another bad excuse management makes to avoid taking responsibility for their decisions.

This. There's knucklehead younger players that will pull that shiat, but that's when you count on leadership and veterans to get the room in order and tell the children to STFU and HTFU.

Most want to win a championship. It's why they put themselves through what they do. A better coach will help them, and they'll accept it.

I don't get the comparison did Phil win a title his first year with the bulls as a head coach ?

Yes, all men are misogynists.

Players will play for someone that will help them win.

Ho and Pippen were on the team already, even though they'd only played two years in the league.

But because Jordan was there, apparently Phil inherited a squad full of recent #1 draft picks and all stars, a recent MVP, in a league with 1/3 as many teams, far less than half as many games, and about 10% the skill level of the NBA.

FWIW the above are just declarations.

Becky deserves an NBA coaching job and I agree with the above, Boston would be a good idea.

Subby your logic is about the same level of wrong as the article writer's logic is and uses about the same level of leverage against her accomplishment to belittle it and tacitly glorify NBA men's championships over the WNBA championship. And the worst part is that this is going to be news to you if you read it. You probably thought that you were ferociously defending her while uplifting women everywhere.

What you actually did was place the WNBA championship at approximately the same as a special olympics medal when compared to an olympics medal. Or a little league world series win compared to a world series win. You made her appear bigger and better than her team, which I guarantee is not what she thinks or wants from leading them into a championship, but even worse you doubled down to imply that the team of athletes who fought hard and work and struggled and endured and stuck together and supported eachother long enough to overcome every other group of women athletes trying to win...you pretty much that the team was holding her back from the real accomplishment that she. was capable of.

The boys didnt get any fewer trophies when she went to the WNBA  and the girls didnt get any extra trophies either. The Aces got a coach that fit them.  And both excelled.

Also while we are on the subject of championships and coaches, just because The aces won a championship in the WNBA  under Becky Hammond there is nothing to predict that she would the the exact fit an NBA team would need to win a championship nor does it predict that she wouldnt or couldnt coach an NBA team to a championship. And each seems to need its own set of skills and team building from their coaches. The WNBA is a balance of skills and strategy and long months of travel and privation that can and do affect professional play and personal health. It also seems to only work well enough to win a championship when at least most members of a team are sort of hard forged into a somewhat selfless group  The NBA is on balance a bunch of divas who make ridiculous public demands and statements on a daily basis. Not in spite of cameras pointing at them, but because cameras are pointing art them. And every team has at least one player who can and will have the owner fire the coach if the players ass is not kissed enough by the coach or if the coach forgets to fluff and stroke the player's ego on camera after each game. Personal brand building and strutting like the earth was made to be their catwalk are among the most envied skills among players. Not every coach has the right tools in her chest or the kind of mindset needed to satisfy the needs of both NBA players and WNBA athletes

It's not? It's literally a trophy no one cares about, just like those others.

except that you can go find quotes from multiple high profile NBA players that say the exact opposite of your final conclusion, so,maybe all of the above is going through some lens you have?

squidloe: Celtics will need a head coach

apparently they have already named the asst coach the head coach for the year, but, that was assuming Udoka was going to be kept long term... if they decide to move on from him, then they maybe don't keep the asstin the coaches job.

And, beyond that she is obviously qualified for the job, because of the reasons they would be dropping Udoka, it would be a good PR move.
