Tumbleweed Connection

is a great album.

The medal is well deserved.  Love that Joe and Jill surprised him with it.

Elton has been around so long that Joe Biden was only 27 when Tumbleweed Connection came out.

He played at Trump's second or third wedding and Limbaugh's second or third or fourth. I love Elton, but I won't forget that shiat.

Aww, I love seeing this. I cut school to go to NYC and see Elton John appear on the Dick Cavett Show the first time he was touring the US. I got to sit in on the sound check and hear him play The Border Song and Burn Down the Mission. Never guessed he'd have such a storied career and such an outsized life. Good on him, and good on Joe for doing this.

Well yes. But he also played at Small Paul's funeral. Maybe.

Limbaugh had to fork over 1 million bucks for that little gig.   He did play for Trump's wedding to Melania in 2005, but I don't know how much that cost Trump.

It had to sting TFG when Elton John turned down a gig at his inauguration.  You know it was eating at him because he went on that weird riff about his (TFG) voice being a better instrument than EJ's or something like that.   From Snopes:

Limbaugh forking over $1M was like a normal person forking up $50 for a concert ticket. I don't really care about the Trump thing, because back then, Trump was just a celebrity. Yes, he dabbled in third party politics, but really, he was just a NY tabloid celebrity who may or may not have signed a new reality show with NBC.

But Limbaugh was a farking asshole/horrible person/homophobe. You had enough cash, Elton. Skip the Limbaugh wedding/hate fest.

When the preacher next door would open his windows and practice his hymns, my mom would open her windows and tell me to play "burn down the mission"
The 40 minute version.

And I obliged.

My understanding is Mr John has a really high cash burn rate, this the depressing era of "pay the bills" tours with Mr Joel.

Elton John was my education into the world of radio payola. He's an alright musician I suppose, but not my choice of what to listen to.
A man and his family had moved into the house across the street from us. He was the new manager of what was at the time the most popular "underground" FM station in the SF Bay Area. While visiting one evening, he brought out some demo albums from work, put one on his turntable, and bluntly stated, "this guy is going to be the next big star."
Elton's first album prior to release.

Last week we went to see him at PNC park (Pittsburgh) Had on the stage seats (well against the stage) and he put on a fantastic show. He was originally scheduled to come out at 9, but he came out at 8 instead and played to past midnight. Fanfarkingtastic version of A love lies bleeding....  At the end he said he was sorry to go but wanted to spend more time with his husband and kids. Dude is a class act.

As far as I know, at least he didn't sell his song catalogue. This kills me:

I appreciate all that Elton has done for the common good over the years.

...I shall remind myself, again, of all that Elton has done for the common good over the years. (Grumble grumble)

I, also, don't see the connection to "payola", traditionally the exchange of money or other considerations for airplay. "Demonstration" or promotional albums don't count.  Those are given to stations to by every company in the business, but the station is under no obligation to play them.  They're stamped with wording that they belong to the record company, not for resale, etc., but if you tried to return them, they'd probably refuse delivery (unless there was some horrible error that meant they were worth tons of money).  Usually, the only difference is that they lack album cover art and/or included goodies (although I've bought some that still had press releases and/or promo photos or stickers in them.)

For my father's funeral, my brother-in-law helped me craft a song collection --- yes, like that ancient tradition of a mix tape. One of the songs was rocket man. why?

Well the old man worked on the Apollo engines. He was an expert in fluid dynamics. He naturally thought in terms of differential equations. He was there when they were testing and exploring the subtle modifications to the engines as they were tested at the Santa Susana Field lab between Chatsworth and Simi Valley. He wrote some of the computer programs used to model rocket engine efficiency. So yes, he was a damn rocket scientist.

Although the actual lyrics of Rocket Man are a bit disjoint, it still tears me up.  Miss you Dad. Thanks Elton and Bernie.

The work he did in the early and mid seventies with Bernie Taupin is some of the most beautiful pop music ever recorded in my opinion. After that, I don't know what happened, but he became indistinguishable from any other mediocre pop artist. Captain Fantastic and Yellow Brick Road are still two of my very favorite albums.
