Having lived there a couple of times, this one doesn't look like it will be a bad one. Power is going to be out for a few days and there will be spotty flooding. But I could name five or six storms in the last 10 years that were worse than this is shaping up to be.

Grocery shopping today in Sarasota was pretty chill. All the big jugs of water were gone, but otherwise, it wasn't terribly different from a regular grocery trip. And I appreciated that.

Answering your question, not snarking...

Water treatment plants get over run.
Until the get back online, boil water alerts is issued.

Boil water advisories are caused by natural disasters like hurricanes and flooding.
Power is out for an undetermined amount of time (3 weeks for Irma)

Yes, I can boil water on the grill. I also have a generator so got it all covered.
Not everyone has that or the ability however.
Its a pain in the ass to boil water, wait for it to cool...etc.
That is why there is a run on bottled water before a hurricane.
/lifestraw - not everyone is aware they exist

I guess if someone lives in a small apartment, maybe having bottled water stored for an eventuality might be hard(er).  But Jesus H. Christ.  We have gallons of the stuff set aside for emergencies.   If we haven't used it in a year, it goes on the annual 10 day hunting trip, then the jugs get sterilized and refilled.   I am always amazed that this happens every frickin' time.   Also have a small chest freezer filled with gallon jugs of water (reused milk jugs).   Handy to use in coolers and are for keeping food cold if the power goes out.   I guess if it came down to it, we would boil that water and use it, too.

Lifestraws are okay, but Sawyer water filtration systems are far superior, imho.
Last so much longer, then you just back-wash the filter and it's almost as good as new. They claim to work for about 10,000 gallons, compared to about 40 for a Lifestraw.

/Haven't tested mine for the 10,000 gal. claim

Citrus County here....
20 year old generator starts on the 2nd pull and has fresh oil. √
2 tanks of propane. √
10 gallons of gas. √
6 cases of water. √

Going up on the roof tomorrow to add some screws.

On the bright side, I got my medical marijuana card yesterday.
I'm 62 and have smoked every day since I was 23, and finally rolled my legal joint this morning. So there's that.

No offense, but I hope the eye comes over Sumter County, specifically The Villages. That place needs a good cleanse.
