I wish they'd get back to those crappy junk movies (like Sharknado). Current programs make me yawn.

Really?
Dang.

I remember we had a 'rigged up' sat dish that was able to get the SF chan. "Free"
Because at the time if you got the signal...that was fine, you got commercials too.

They have really bad movies...and this guy that did a proto 'art bell' show about UFO's, Crypo zoology...etc.

And Harland Ellison would have a segment where he'd just Biatch, Biatch, Biatch and Rant about stuff.

if you want your fill of B movies, stream Tubi. It's free. All (or a lot) of the Sharknados are there, among tons of other "gems". B movie heaven.

Roku and Sansung have apps, probably others.

After new management took over and dumped MST3K, the cheesy in house movies were all SyFy had left.   With those gone it just sucks.  They show friggin' Die Hard and John Wick on SyFy now.

I don't know the last time I watched SyFy.  Back when ZNation was on and the show about the people who all lost their memories and ran around in a space ship and called each other numbers.

I loved FTL
Also UFO, and all the great shows they would pull out of the vault
And SG1

Agreed.  Loved both of them.  Well, except for the Degreeka season.

They still do the Twilight Zone marathon on New Year's Eve/Day which is good.

2022-09-24 2:22:39 PM
The best era of Sci-Fi was when they had the "fun" originals like Eureka, WH13, and Stargate.

The second-best era was the weird low-budget feeling early days when they had FTL Newsfeed, MST3k, and random single-season shows from the 80s.

2022-09-24 2:28:40 PM
Does that channel still exist? I haven't watched it since they renamed it to Syffy and start playing nothing but WWE wresting and that feels like it was twenty years ago.

I remember being really excited for a channel of just science fiction.  And then I remember it taking about 3 weeks for me to give up on the channel.  And they didn't even have any of their original crappy programming then, just bad reruns of bad shows, bad ancient monster flicks, and Star Trek TOS.  I was really bummed about that.

Resident Alien is good.  It's Northern Exposure, but with Allen Tudyk as a casually murderous alien doctor.

Bonnie Hammer dismantled the Sci-Fi Channel. As with John Smedley, I have a tiny, deep, dark place in my heart where I keep a burning nugget of hate for her.

She really is part of the problem.

Semi serious question, I don't have cable so I don't get Syfy.

Do they still do the Ghost Hunters Halloween live feed?

That was actually fun in the "so bad it's good" kinda way.  Back in college I'd stay up drinking watching the whole thing, morning classes be damned.

I am glad that they tried to continue sliders after fox put down the ax on the show. What I didn't like about it is that
the writing went to crap mid-season 3. Didn't like turning the cromags into the main villians and when sabrina lloyd left the writting was on the wall.

I would absolutely watch a movie-of-the-week docudrama of the behind-the-scenes from that series.  It was a farking mess.  The producers made the wrong choice in ditching Sabrina.  They also lost the great recurring characters early in the run  by moving production.  O'Connell forcing his brother into the cast didn't help any, and replacing Quinn in the fifth season was just an even worse decision.

It starts weird (the Showtime miniseries) and then gets weird by the time season four rolls around.  It's exactly like a German-Canadian sci-fi production would be expected to turn out.  It's definitely not for everyone, but it's worth a try.

Also, that was awesome with the channel was Anime block that they had. First, was a week or two week launch either 95 or 96? Then it became Anime Saturdays for a little bit. I remember first being introduced to much of the older anime  via the  channel. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Bubblegum Crisis. Yes it was somewhat edited.

They're both too different to compare. They're both the best at what they did/do.

I watched Sci-Fi Channel back in the golden years, 1996-2002. Mission Genesis, SeaQuest, Quantum Leap, Outer Limits. And the Japanimation block. Damned good programming. The slow slide to mediocrity pained me greatly.

12 Monkeys was decent though.

Such a weird channel launch. First there was the countdown timer, then Star Wars non-stop, then repeats of the Twilight Zone.

Eventually they'd mostly show wrestling, with the peak of Lexx/Farscape/Stargate/Battlestar Galactica far behind.

2022-09-25 7:52:14 AM
Wouldn't this mean more if the channel still existed in a meaningful way?  Arguably it died and was replaced by a badly malformed clone.  With that process later being repeated.

2022-09-25 10:57:06 AM

Nintenfreak: Sci-Fi died like 7 years in.

"In 1992, the channel was sold by Rubenstein and Silvers to USA Networks, then a joint venture between Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures.[3][4] Rubenstein and Silvers became vice-chairs of USA Networks. The channel was seen as a natural fit with classic films and television series that both studios had in their vaults, including Universal's Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Rod Serling TV series Night Gallery"

Looks like it was a late-term abortion.

It took me a while to get used to the serious use of puppets, and sometimes the production values get pretty cheap.  Beyond that, there's a stretch somewhere after the half-way point that it got a bit boring / campy-bad with the antagonists.

But in the end I watched the full run and I'm not sorry I did.
