Ours is constantly in use by our offspring & their offspring. We should call it "the family lodging" room.
No complaints - just an observation.

Cafe Threads: The "guest room" is normally the junk room.

Yep. We have a guest room because my parents live in other countries so they need somewhere to stay when they visit. It isn't unused when they're not here though, it's just that there is a bed for someone in addition to its other uses. A guest room that is only used when you have guests would be a waste of space for the vast majority of people.

I have to put the computers somewhere.

4 bedroom 2.5 bath. All rooms occupied but there is a finished basement with a comfy futon if needed. Only problem is there isn't a bathroom down there.

I could add one and another bedroom down there but then I would have  to swap out the glass block window.

I know plenty of people that were on the cusp of finally owning a home.  Then the interest rates more than doubled and the house prices stayed the same.  Then the cost of everything went up and wages stayed the same.  Of course, it's their fault for being millenials.  Back to waiting...

So don't be stupid about your choices for table set when you get married.

My wife and I chose a fine china set from Lenox that is microwave and dishwasher safe even with the metal rings.  It's otherwise very plain, but we've used it as our only set for the last fifteen years.

So we don't have a separate cabinet full of china, it's kept in the normal kitchen cabinets as daily-use.

I suppose for this to work, you probably need to get married, and if marriage rates are falling then this might not be happening quite so often as it used to either.

Smelly Pirate Hooker: A spare room you never use is rich white nonsense. Except even most white people can't afford it.

We have a spare bedroom in our East Bay, CA house. My brother and sister in law live up near Yosemite and stay over at our place all the time when they have to go to Oakland or SF to work etc.

We had a spare room in our house in Florida but Mrs Alt wanted a larger dinning room/living room area so I opened the wall to make a single larger space. So we have a massive very comfy couch that comfortably sleeps 3 without a pullout.

Mrs Alt has a large family with lots of friends and family that likes to travel and visit. I have lots of friends that like to visit us in Florida all the time because the place is very remote and right on the river., I have friends staying in our Florida house this month while we are in CA working.

We bought both of these homes well below market when we purchased them and fixed them up ourselves. We are far from broke but calling us 'rich' is farking joke. If we were 'rich' we wouldn't be commuting back and forth from CA to sock enough away for retirement.

Congratulations on a REALLY silly thing that you think means something.  The young'uns commanding COLLECTIVELY more dollars than us old folks did at a specific point is entirely farking ridiculous if presented as some sort of point against them.  With the loss of value per dollar, the rise of the total number of people holding dollars, the massive rise in the cost of real property and resources, the young folks have to work harder to achieve less that I did, and I am genX.

As an example, my parents were able, as utterly dirt poor people, think living in actual poverty, to buy 2.5 acres in southern California.  There is no WAY this could be done now, unless you move out into actual blasted wasteland.

Its harder now.  Period.  Not insurmountable, but biatching about it being harder is understandable, and doing the whole "Its totally doable, just don't buy avocado toast" thing is utterly stupid.

Guess I am an asshole Boomer.

We have two guest rooms and two guest full bathrooms. Fully outfitted. We have family fly in for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break and usually at some point over the Summer. It's great having the family stay with us and it saves a lot of money on hotels. Our downstairs A/C went out end of July so we were sleeping upstairs in one of the guest rooms for over four weeks. Delay in getting the A/C parts due to supply issues.

Purposely bought a large home in 2001. 5 BR 3 1/2 BA. Just the wife and I. We knew family would be visiting frequently so we planned for it. Other two bedrooms are his and her home offices. It has worked out great for us, having the space that we do.

its hard to have a "guest room" when you're so poor you're either moved back in with your parents or still living with 3 roommates at 35.
did they factor that into the survey?

Daughter is 37. Three years ago, she bought a small Cape. A VERY small Cape. She's paying 4% and uses her guest room for a housemate who helps her make the payments. I don't think home ownership is dead, you just need to find a place you can afford. Turns out, the old mill town in which she bought, is becoming trendy. Work is 20 minutes away. She's a school librarian, so union job with good benefits, and reasonably secure.

I'm a Boomer. Bought my house in 1993. Both former kids' rooms are now guest rooms (and were used as such when the other kid and his family spent 4 weeks this summer with us. Gotta make it easy or we don't get to see the grandkids.

My home office is a cozy corner of the basement, with carpeted wood floor, drywall and suspended ceiling. Built it myself, and it's used for contract work and hobbies.

Society: How do you expect Job Creators to afford to employ you if they have to also pay you!!

Millennials: Well... maybe with more affordable housing we could manage...
Society: We need to maintain home values so old people who own homes can retire in comfort.

Millennials: Any chance of some sort of help with daycare costs...
Society: LOL 😂 😂😂

Millennials:OK... maybe we can take this tiny apartment and then turn this "bonus room" into a kids bedroom, and then if we're really careful with space and possessions we can turn this really one bed place into a tiny family home...
Society: Why aren't you setting aside a guest room for your parents to come visit! B

I don't have guests that often, but when I do, it's nice that they have their own space.

Ahh yes, the guest room, the room that doesn't get used, that which my alienated-by-consumerism father calls the storage room, and which I call hoarding useless plastic disposable goods from the 90s to today.

If only I had a room to store broken electronics and tupperware I don't use because I only drink convenience store coffee and eat subway like him. Oh well.
