While writing up this week's Quiz, I came across this link from last week

https://www.fark.com/comments/12561852

And wound up down a rabbit hole about red pandas. Turns out scientists really aren't sure exactly what they are. They're not related to giant pandas, but they're also not very closely related to raccoons. Its paw structure is similar to a bear, but its diet is more like a koala or an angry Floridian at a restaurant - it eats shoots and leaves.

Also, they make for cute gifs.

So take the Quiz and come back and tell us how you did and whether you'd have a red panda as a pet.

Don't forget the Easy Quiz!

Good luck, and let me know if you have any issues.

Are Red Pandas red because they're party commissars?

In all seriousness, don't scienticians have DNA data on them?  If so, they should be able to determine their closest relatives via genetic drift.  If not, it could be a sign of converging evolution from a different family of animals.  Or the Red Panda could represent the only survivor of an extinct type of mammals.

Well, yeah, the problem is they don't exactly fit. They are closer to raccoons and weasels than anything, but the divergence was a loooong time ago, long before either of those evolved.

Apparently cuteness was a selection trait for the red panda.

From Wikipedia...

The evolutionary lineage of the red panda (Ailuridae) stretches back around 25 to 18 million years ago, as indicated by extinct fossil relatives found in Eurasia and North America.

Sounds like the latter theory; last survivor of an ancient family of extinct species.  Like certain other mammals and birds that are the last survivors of their respective families.

Also, you up early?  Or have you not finished drinking yet? 🍻🍺

I thought they were related to Ewoks.

I don't mind missing a question I know but missing a question when I saw the story 🤬🤬🤬

Well, if I accomplish nothing else today, at least I temporarily have the high score on the Easy Quiz and got to see some cute red panda gifs.

I can't buy Siggi's yogurt. It sounds too much like cigs. I picture ashtray flavoured yogurt and it makes my stomach churn.

Pretend it's short for "Sigmund".
