Apparently it's called crudité by some people in NJ.

lilistonic: But why?

Excellent question.  Family now has a "record" that means absolutely nothing.  More importantly, they have spent 30 hours a week of time they can never get back tending to this thing.  And now it's 2,405 pounds of something that has no use.  Can't be eaten.  Has to be disposed of.  Too heavy for the compost bin.

I went to the pumpkin festival in Pittsburgh last year.  Oh trust me, there's a purpose.

30 hours a week caring for it? What does it required that takes 30 hours?

Hippos like pumpkins. ("I like turtles," modified).

"Sunstrom told The Intelligencer that his family spent 30 hours per week over the past month taking care of it ahead of the festival."

That's over 4 hours a day.  What can you do for 4 hours a day to make a pumpkin grow?  Sing it songs?  Tell it stories of Linus from Peanuts?  Hang out and listen to its tales while it snorts Miracle Grow?

Compensation for something else that might be lacking?
